All strong interior designers know that while it is valuable to understand how to design larger spaces, it is imperative to understand how to design small spaces. In this video, I explore how interior designer Nate Berkus first revolutionized what it means to truly design and elevate small spaces during his first appearance on The Oprah Show in 2010. Nate gave a tiny Boston apartment “the star treatment”, and turned it completely around with his mentality that style is always about people and not things. Nate focused on the idea that every space is more so about what unique factors individuals bring to it and their overall presence, rather than having the most expensive or most grand items! In this video I explore my top 5 tips for how to design small spaces--consider the envelope of your space, the scale of furniture, how to create a strong focal point, the use of platform beds, and how to maximize your space through organization. The envelope involves color and cohesiveness--consider how your space is quite literally enveloped--keep your wall colors cohesive, and make sure to choose one, correctly sized rug. I then move on to the scale of furniture and dive into how to choose the right scale and upholstery for the size of your space; furniture that is too large, bulkily upholstered, or placed poorly can crowd your space when you really want to open it up. Next, I move on to the importance of focal points, which are vital to spaces of all shapes and sizes. Focal points can be created through mirrors and create the illusion of larger, more fluid spaces, or can be created through correctly sized art that keeps the room compelling and distracts from the size. Of equal importance is the use of platform beds, which are rather low and can create more volume of space above the bed, resulting in the illusion of a larger room. And lastly, as well as arguably the most important piece of advice, is that of being intentional about organization and keeping your space de-cluttered. Small spaces should be kept fairly minimalistic and highly organized, and all pieces of furniture should be bought for the dual use of storage, not only for aesthetically pleasing value (though this is of course always important!). There is never a space that cannot be made beautiful, and in this video, I show you how to bring your interior design dreams true for small spaces!

Wonderful tips, Nina!!! ❤️❤️
Taste and style is your gifting. YOU are a phenomenal women.
My condo is gorgeous 850 sq ft built inside a renovated church. The windows are the shape church windows are but not stained. I have 15 ft ceilings and skylights. The bedrooms are small but I use only pieces everywhere that I love. With great art curated pieces of decor green trees and plants it is welcoming, modern cool. I love my wide plank oak floors. It took me years to get things this close to a love affair.
Happy New Year, Nina; I love your videos. They are informative and exciting.
Happy New Year Nina! Great tips, I have a small room that can be a small dinning area, den or small TV area, I'll be repainting an accent wall same color as the other 3 walls! I'm still correcting some of my other mistakes I learned I made from your last video!! Haha! I am learning quite a bit since recently finding your channel! Thank you!!
So nice. Have Happy Thanksgiving.

❤️This premiere was fabulous!!! I loved the tip about painting the baseboards the same color as the wall for a more dramatic effect! Would the same rule apply to door frame molding?
Great video, thanks Nina🌷

Wishing you a better new year ahead!
Thank you, I loved it! You answered questions that had bothered me for years. Thank again! Love your presentation style.( I saw that particular show on Oprah with Nate. I dutifully watched Oprah when Nate was going to be on. He never failed to thrill me with his solutions.) Your personal style is so facinating and yet open and down to earth, not dismissive unlike what I have experienced from those who have been blessed with such a grand presence. I am thrilled with the logic of your design eye that you offer so generously and easy as you go through your explanations. I feel really more empowered now to attempt those out of the box ideas of mine, suited for my life style, in tune my ethics but now, with a better understanding of what can make it work.

Happy New Year! Really like your dress.
love your content and aesthetic. Can you do a video on draperies and window treatments? I recently purchased a home and am looking at doing curtains in our great room, to follow our cozy, elegant, 2800 sf home. Thanks. Cindy

Great advise and tips, My Friend.
Wow I have same shoes 😍
I still don't understand how to move the furniture away from the wall in a smaller space. My living room is not apartment-sized but is also not that large. If I move the furniture away from the wall there will not be very much room to walk and move around. Maybe you could do a whole video on this!

One way I can think, instead of all the sofa set. Buy a love seat and one or two chairs with a small central table or Ottoman. When placing furniture, pick a focal point, a window, or a fireplace. Set your biggest piece of furniture across from the focal point and a chair on the right or left side. And place the small central table or an Ottoman in the middle.

I live in mobile home. So shape is pretty much same in all mobile homes.
💖🤝❤❤😛👍
This house design by Nate is not my favourite, it looks cluttered & not everyone has high ceilings.
Thank you for this video. I found it to be very informative. Just one suggestion - please consider not wearing shoes inside your home. Ineed they are beautifully elegant but shoes in general which have been worn outside are very unhygienic when worn inside with dirt, viruses such as COVID-19, etc. on the bottom of them.

I am so glad you mentioned the shoe dilemma. I never wear shoes inside the house unless I’m filming a video. Don’t worry I scrub the bottom of the shoes and disinfect them before I wear them in the house it might sound crazy but like you I hate to bring dirt from the outdoors in.
Nina, your videos are US centric & generally don’t work in the U.K. How about focusing on the typical UK home for your UK subscribers.
