How To Paint Your Brick Wall. Great Result! SAVE $$$.

Please Like, Share, Comment, SUBSCRIBE* bit.ly/39oBzG5This little room at the back of my place is a hobby/studio/storage room and the brick walls were once the outside bricks before it was made into a room (as an after thought by a later owner).
It has great light but the dark brown bricks and green floor just lowered the feel of the room.
So, I decided to see what a couple of coats of fresh paint would do...and the result is great.!
A new room after just a couple of coats of paint!
Cheers, Mark.👍

    Thanks for this video. I volunteered to paint mums rental which has 8 walls of brick. I’m now wondering if I should have put my hand up lol. I was hoping to only do 3 coats but can see the 2 primer coats is essential. After finishing painting my whole townhouse solo a couple months ago, I vowed I would never paint again! 😂

    I initially tried with aerosol spray cans (on the side wall in the video) but I couldn't get the right coverage and I had a much smaller space than you. I had either paint runs or barely any coverage at all, it was difficult to strike the right balance. I found the brush and roller gave me a better result. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Mark.

    Hi Sean, Yes it was the same 4 in 1 paint. I was going to apply a tinted top coat but when I saw the room finished I was quite happy with the colour of that base white. I still may change it to a tinted top coat down the track but have no plans to right now. Either way it's a good base on those old bricks. Cheers, Mark.

    I have a QUESTION for you!! :) Thank you! Your wall turned out great. I have a shed I want to paint (inside) but don't want to plaster it because I'd like to keep the brick effect. I've researched that paint applied straight onto brick weakens the brick over time and starts to fall off. 3 years have pasted since you uploaded this video. I was wondering if you've had any problems with the wall or is it still looking good as new??

  • @MarkdoesDIY

    @MarkdoesDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Kim, the painted wall is holding up well. The paint still looks fresh and has not started coming off at all. The wall is indoors , so no weather to damage it and I gave it a really good clean first. I took my time and thoroughly applied 2 base/sealer coats and then 2 finishing/top coats, so I tried to give it the best chance of success and so far it's great. I can only speak for my wall but there's been no problems at all after 3 years. Thanks so much for watching and for the great question! Good luck! 👍

    As a pro I'll say good result but fewthings sprung to mind. 1 get a bigger brush because you hit most of the face of the brick when doing the awkward bits. 2 roller pole. But the job looks great these things are just to improve speed

    Would spraying the wall down with water be enough to remove debris before starting or does it need a proper wash ? I have a wall of about 600 square feet so really was just going to pressure wash it and let it try before starting. I'm also using a spray gun and am planning on doing 1 coat of exterior primer/paint on it would this be fine or would I need to do 2 coats forsure ? 🤔

    Mark, do you think it would be ok to use a power washer to clean the walls instead of the time consuming brushing first?

  • @MarkdoesDIY

    @MarkdoesDIY

    Жыл бұрын

    The bricks and mortar need to be in good dry condition before painting to allow the paint to really stick. A power water washer would allow water to get deep inside any cracks or faults in the mortar (or bricks) and the drying time would be far greater than hand scrubbing with a brush and soapy water. Hand scrubbing also allows you to get up close to the surface to really see anything that needs attention. Cheers and good luck! 👍

  • @MarkdoesDIY

    @MarkdoesDIY

    I thought the same, so before I filmed the video I tried spraying a small adjacent wall but I couldn't get the same coverage and depth (especially in the mortar) that I did with the small brush, without making a lot of heavy drip runs. The way I did it might seem slower but for me the brush was the best option. Of course someone with better gear and spraying skills than me might take the spray option, it's just that the brush worked for me. It's still looking good too without any touchups. Cheers and thanks for the look in! 👍

  • @MarkdoesDIY

    @MarkdoesDIY

    3 жыл бұрын

    Fair question. The mortar was recessed in quite a bit back from the surface of the bricks and so I really needed to push the brush in to reach all of the mortar. The mortar was also very porous as well so it really soaked up the paint, making me load the brush quite heavily. So, as I was doing this there was enough paint on the brush to do the bricks as well, so I did. I could have run over the bricks at this point with a roller but as I was there with a brush and paint in my hand I just continued over the bricks with the brush. Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers!

    Painting a brick house is ALWAYS a BIG MISTAKE! The beauty of bare brick is the many decades of maintenance-free service. Yes, I know it's cool and trendy, but it's a huge dis-service in the long run. The current or future owners will have to scrape and repaint and as the coats of paint accumulate the shorter the life of the paint. Eventually, ALL the paint needs to be sandblasted or removed with paint stripper. And then probably the mortar joints repaired (tuck pointing). So PLEASE just spare the home and future owners of this horrible fad!

    Painting brick, especially old clay brick, is not going to work. It will look horrible soon, then you have to remove the paint which is very expensive hard work or paint over the failing paint which will fail if the bricks haven't exploded already from wet freezing from not breathing. Yes, people do it to flip houses so buyer beware; never buy a painted brick house unless you're prepared for to pay a lot of money or a summer of drudgery to get it off and be happy with distressed / abused brick.
