Hi, just watched this upload…really interest. I was given some of these paints for Easter. I paint in acrylics. So I’m a complete novice with this. But I had started a painting, blocked out in acrylics - as is usual - then thought I can do the detail in these new oil ones. However, I don’t like the flat acrylic finish against the shiny oils. I should have studied it a bit I think. Perhaps there is something out there that I could have used between the acrylic and then the oil…. Im feeling a bit stressed. So I shall study your previous videos, I will hopefully pick hints and tips along the way. Thank you 🏴🇬🇧

@@timpackerfinearts Hi Tim, thanks again for this video. I do have a question, as i I don't have this issue with traditional oil. I have been trying out the artisan W&N oils( Water soluble.) I noticed that when i paint in layers, the paint doesn't want to stick onto the canvas, lifting paint off that is already on it.. This makes me waste a lot of paint. Do you know why this is happening? I do dab off excess water from my brush onto a paper towel after cleaning it, so i think that part is ok. when i applied a thin layer of linseed oil, i made sure there was no dripping. it almost seems like the canvas is somehow too wet that when i do go on to add another layer of paint, it keeps lifting paint off. Will impasto solve this issue? is it the quality of the paint ? is it possible, i am not removing enough excess water as i think? Thanks a lot in advance! Sam
@timpackerfinearts
3 жыл бұрын
@@QballSam whenever you touch a wet brush to a wet canvas you will either leave paint on the canvas or pick up paint from the canvas. Usually a bit of both. If you start with thinner applications of paint and then gothicker you should be able to add paint to an area that is wet. If you want to layer applications without the risk of lifting paint then you might want to let the paint dry before adding a layer. The impasto medium will certainly help with that😊
Excellent tutorial! thank you
Never thought of using acrylic as an under-painting for watermixable oils. I don’t use my watermixable oils as thick as you do, often layering, and was wondering if I could also try an acrylic under-painting with a slightly more fluid mix of the oil layers on top? If you haven’t tried it and don’t know, I’ll just give it a try. Thanks for the upload Tim 👍🏼 The way you get your paintings to express the light is phenomenal by the way. Beautiful ❤️

Hi Tim thanks very much for this tutorial and the painting is beautiful. Tim can I ask what the drying time would be after finishing the painting using these water soluble oils with the linseed oil. I know the real oils are pain cos they take so much longer than any other paint to dry. I believe the ordinary oils take up to 3 months before they are even touch dry and then to try to store them safely so they dont get destroyed. And thevsmell is not great for me cos I have chest problems. I love the look of oils but I cant use them mostly because of my chest. But also to try and store them safely. Its a no go area really. I was wondering how long approx these would take to dry completely. Id love to try them out. Thanks again for this because this is the first time I' ve seen a tutorial with water soluble oil paints. Thank you so much. God bless Susan

Thank you, very useful tips. Question: why do you apply the oil layer to the underpainting? To improve the paint flow? I started oil painting with Cobra oils, but can‘t figure out the proper consistency where the paint still has enough covering strength but it is flowing like in the KZread tutorials :-) I also have some tubes of Artisan but they are even stickier than the Cobras directly from the tube.

the oil allows the paint to slide on more easily...otherwise it is more like painting in dry brush
I go back and forth between oils and acrylics; maybe I should give these water-solubles another look. If they are as convenient as acrylics I’d be very happy!

Thank you, this is great tips and I'm very excited to get going. Just wondering though, if oil paints take such a long time to dry, what happens with dust and stuff in the air that settles on everything?
@NicolasConnault

You can wash this off. The surface will be dry pretty quickly, it's the layers beneath the surface that take a long time to dry. Dust won't have time to get into any wet paint.

Thanks for this instruction using the water soluble oils - how long did you let your base coated canvas dry before you put on the layer of clear medium?
@timpackerfinearts

You need to wait until it is totally dry. That’s why I use fluid acrylics to tone the canvas and block in the composition. They dry much faster.😊👍
Tim, Your kindness is HUGE! Does the painting need to be sealed after a specific amount of time? Is there a long wait time to completing this step in order to sell it? Thank you very much! Christy🖌

Here's his response to a similar question asked further down in the comments -- Hi Lorrie... it depends on the paints you are using , how thickly they are applied and whether or not you are using any mediums with the paints. Some colours (reds especially) take forever to dry, while some colours dry very quickly. Thick paint takes longer to cure... and some mediums (impasto medium) can drastically speed up drying time. The main thing is to make sure the paint has fully cured and dried all the way through before varnishing. You can do a touch test to determine whether or not the paint has cured. Areas of thick paint should feel firm and not soft and squishy... if in doubt you are better to give the painting a little more time before varnishing😊👍
Please do a comparison video of the Winsor Newton Artisan oils to other water soluble brands like Cobra, Daniel Smith, Grumbacher Max etc....

I don't think you can get the same effects with the oils. Most of them are water miscible which means they can be cleaned with soap and water... but they are not meant to be diluted with water to paint with. You could try it out... but you might find that it weakens the oil binder and the paint layers might be. very unstable... the paint might easily come off of the canvas.
Thank you very much for your tutorial. I could not find the link on my iPad. I’m back to using oils after many years and mixable are my choice. I’m experimenting painting over an acrylic painting. Is that a positive experiment for future? Your tutorial was excellent- thank you again 🙏🙏🙏

How economic is water-soluble oil vs acrylic, especially for a beginner? How long does it take to dry? Also, can you just paint over the oil with gesso if you don't like the painting?
@timpackerfinearts

It can be much more economical because the paints stay workable much longer... days even weeks if you use a standard wet palette. I would not re coat them with gesso... I',m not sure how good the adhesion would be
