Try & Test: Cobra Water-Mixable Oil Paints Haul! Do they work? 💧 Wash your Brushes in Water!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video is NOT Sponsored but I did receive the Cobra paints from Royal Talens Australia as part of their Instagram 'Feature Artist' Program.
I was definitely a bit skeptical starting out with #Cobra paints after being an oil painter loyal to my solvents for cleaning - but I was pleasantly surprised how lovely they were to work with!

    But, if you're layering, you still have to add oil, right? So, in the end you are going to need to wash the brushes with solvents, right? Or I'm getting this wrong?

    Simply substitute the oil you would use as a medium for one of the watersolulable mediums (in the video I use Cobras quick dry medium, which is the leanest but they also have 'painting medium' and 'glazing medium' which have higher oil contents AND the built in emulsifier) so you still don't need to use solvents 👍 any brand that makes watersolulable oils also usual has mediums in their range.

    One of my most favorite birds and you did it so beautifully! Thank you for such an informative video. Hooked on watercolor, but I have been buying and stock piling this brand for several years waiting to get the gumption to try it out and they feel just as fresh in the tubes as the day I bought them. Hard to believe the cost of these paints today, but they are so worth it! Subscribed and going to check out the rest of your videos!

    Honestly dive in with just two colours 💕 a dark and a light and have a go it's really so much less stress than watercolour (at least for me 😅 oils you can always wipe off or go back, watercolour once it's there it's there - I find that so stressful! 😆)

    Excellent information. Just like you, I wondered where the name Cobra came from. Thanks for solving that riddle for me. I just bought some Cobra Study paints to try out and see how I like the water mixable oils. I've had trying water mixable oils in the back of my mind for several years, holding off since I always have so many regular oil paints and mediums, and finally decided to take the plunge! I've been painting a lot with acrylics but, you just can't mix and blend acrylic like you can with oil paint. Your demo of the little bird gives me hope. Thanks for taking the time to share with us!

  • @LizGridleyArtist

    No worries!! ❤️ Good luck I hope you have fun with them! Also remember you can always use your acrylics for an underlayer, they are fine underneath oils (you just can't use them over any oil) - especially for a large work it's a great way to block in your shapes/large areas then use the oil above for the beautiful blendability, colour mixing and glazes 😊

    Do you think the Cobra water soluble paints would work over regular oil paints that had already dried?

  • @LizGridleyArtist

    @LizGridleyArtist

    3 жыл бұрын

    In theory yes, as they are still an oil drying to a hard resin paint it should layer fine but my gut instinct would be to NOT use any water in the paint whilst painting, only use water for clean up. I would probably avoid mediums so as to not get the fat/lean content wrong between layers and just stick with paint straight from the tube too.

    @@LizGridleyArtist Thanks for the reply, I live in Brisbane and started painting with oils using Montmarte oils, which are cheap "student grade" quality. The pigment load is much better in Montmarte oils than what I've found in Cobra, specially the Titanium white of which I bought a large tube, I think it was like 250 ml or so. I do not like that it takes many weeks to dry and they dry to a plasticky very shiny finish. So I went back to Montmarte, Winton and the artist grade Winsor & Newton. Your videos are good, however you need a little work to get rid of the upspeak to improve the quality of the videos, take care.

    It's definetly recommend the medium during painting, if your brushes didn't rinse dolly in the water they might need a little soap to get the pigment out - I hope that's helpful! Otherwise message the company over social media because the paints definetly shouldn't harm your brushes

    They still contain artists quality pigments which all have their own risk factors (such as cadmiums being carcinogenic when sand papered/turned to dust in the air) but the main thing they remove is use of solvents in cleaning. So when cleaning they have less risk than normal oils.
