HOW TO: Paint REALISTIC Fall Leaves in Watercolor

Paint a REALISTIC fall leaf in watercolor!
Your best autumn leaf painting in this easy step by step tutorial.
SCROLL DOWN FOR LINKS!
I wanted to share with you some simple tips and tricks that will give your fall leaves a bit more of a three dimensional quality. Texture techniques like working on damp paint to "split" open veins, using masking fluid as well as splattering and dry brush.
Check out my FULL LENGTH TUTORIALS:

BRUSHES:
Peruse my carefully handcrafted line of watercolor brushes: crystal-beshara.square.site/
I find observing and painting nature very meditative and calming. Art doesn’t have to be a masterpiece that you hang on your wall to be fulfilling. It can be just part of a soul-filling mindful practice. Get lost in a micro world that is beheld in a simple leaf. This is for ALL LEVELS.
I hold a diploma from the Society of Botanical Artists (UK) and, while my many of my tutorials here on my channel are quick and simple illustrations, a lot of my work is highly structured and detailed. The goal of botanical illustration is to bridge the worlds of Science and Art so this tutorial will hopefully bring a bit more realism to your leaf paintings as well as feel just darn good for your soul.
Please subscribe to my channel and stay tuned for more videos!
MATERIALS NEEDED:
140 lb Cold Pressed paper, mounted to a board. (I am using ARCHES bright white)
For tips on mounting paper watch HOW TO STRETCH YOUR PAPER THE EASY WAY: crystalbeshara.com/crystal-bes...
BRUSHES: crystalbeshara.com/shop-brushes
1 x #8 or #10 Round Brush (synthetic or sable or a blend is fine. I use my #10 Designer Blend)
1x stiff brush for mixing your paint colours (I use my "Filbert Mixer")
1x #1 Synthetic round or liner/rigger ( I use my #1 Ivory Rigger)
1x #3 Round Brush (synthetic or sable or a blend is fine. I use my #3 Designer Blend)
1 x small fan brush (I find synthetic works best. I use my "FLING")
a bit of hard soap
2 jars of water
paper towel or a rag
tissue for blotting
a test strip of watercolour paper
1" masking tape
- SHOP my Paint BRUSHES: get 15% off with code " WelcomeSAVE! " crystal-beshara.square.site
- PALETTE The most amazing palette ever! Excellent mixing space, plenty of wells, and premium plastic...even when it's dropped (speaking from experience) MASTERSON PRO PALETTE: amzn.to/3kSmKkZ
- PAPER ARCHES 140 lb cold press paper (9x12 BLOCK) amzn.to/3n9sYQ2
- PAINT I use Da Vinci brand paints - a professional grade artist watercolour, however, if you're looking for a complete set of student grade watercolours try the COTMAN (Winsor & Newton's entry level line) amzn.to/3kUzTdb
- MASKING FLUID: I have tried many, many dozens of masking fluids over the years. The best one hands down is by PEBEO. You can see it, it rubs off easily and it has excellent coverage. amzn.to/3BFFCdF

- PENCILS: Faber Castel set of pencils WITH kneadable eraser, vinyl eraser + sharpener!
amzn.to/3trou8V
- Canson Tracing paper 11” x 14”
amzn.to/3troyFH
- BURNISHING TOOL (embossing stylus if you’re transferring or tracing a drawing): amzn.to/3zJe9az
I hope this helps!
Happy Painting!

So beautiful! Thanks for technics! I am amateur to paint by my talent, i never been in any painting school and i have discovered later in my life that i love painting and i started with water colour on simply album paper....and these days i've painted some autumnal portraits and i needed some advices...i see that i need to add those shadows looking so real and more layers of nerves and to paint on textured paper! 🍂🖌️🙏 Thank you! God bless you and your family! ✨🤗💕✨

Sorry for the late reply! Your message slipped through the cracks. I am using Masters brush cleaning soap but truly any hard bar soap will do avoid using liquid soap and be sure not to apply too much of it to your brush so wiping off excess is an essential step

Great! I've subscribed. Can you use any soap on masking brush? Then will it just wash off afterwards?

If possible, I would choose hard soap over liquid soap. You still want to make sure that you’re rinsing your brush every minute or so and then re-soap in to protect your bristles each time. Don’t put too much soap on your brush though because you don’t want to contaminate your masking fluid bottle. Thank you for subscribing! 🙌 Here’s another video all about masking fluid kzread.info/dash/bejne/h3qnmqdppbeyhaQ.html

Your work is beautiful, your teaching is clear and understanding . What is the paint brand you recommend? I recently got back into my water coloring ,after several years .I find I need to refurbish my old supplies .

Hi Kathy! Depending on where you live if you can get your hands on Da Vinci watercolors that would be amazing! They are an artist quality line but you get 37 ml instead of five mills which is the typical size for most artist grade paints. They’ll go along way especially if you’re still in the learning phase. Having enough watercolor paint on hand will allow you to freely be creative without hindering you by being overly economical with the paint!

Thanks for sharing I sooo appreciated and enjoyed your video. I do have a question about the colors you were using 🤷‍♀️the burnt umber +violet ..was that two colors or did you buy them already mixed ? If it’s two colors how do I know how much of each color is needed? That confused me. Thanks again 💌

Hi! Yes this is a favourite combo of mine. Really at any ratio they are beautiful! Uust try the, out with a little more and varying degrees of each on a test paper :) Mine here was sort of a mahogany colour. With paint there is no real way of explaining how much of each...not like baking ingredients unfortunately. That said, I have a super nifty COLOUR CHART KIT you can download that shows you a full range with values listed as well. They have been very popular! crystalbeshara.com/shop-color-recipe-charts

@@CrystalBesharaArtist thank you, when you say violet in this tutorial, are you referring to mauve or is there an additional violet that isn't on that palette in your link?

Actually, mauve by da Vinci paints is more like a dioxazine violet. Not too red. Not too blue. So look for DIOXAZINE violet as a color or for that on your label. It’s the perfect violet.

Hi there! I’m using masters brush cleaner. But honestly any kind of hard soap would do. It’s a great way to use up little slivers of hard soap that you have left or, tiny hotel soaps! I would avoid using liquid soap. And be sure to wipe most of it off of your bristles before dipping into your masking fluid 😊

Shades do have colour. I use colour in my shadows all the time - colour brings shadows to life and add translucency. Thanks for watching :)

lovely teaching, but once again as I have experienced in many classes, there begins the word "trace," yikes, even if the leaf isn't the greatest shape, draw your own interpretation.

Feel free to draw your own, but if my video kzread.info/dash/bejne/hX17vMGSnazWcto.html number of views has indicated, not everyone who would like to enjoy learning and exploring new mediums has the skill set to draw. Art making should be accessible to anyone no matter what level they are at. This video is for all levels - if you are more expert, or a keen observer, free hand drawing is ALWAYS an option :)
