    All good info but really should work from top down. You do not need to use TSP unless you don't mind waiting for work to dry. Just light sand on entire previously painted surfaces and wipe, brush, or blow off dust. Small roller is good for initial application with immediate follow-up with good brush. The use of satin sheen is fine (as opposed to semi-gloss or gloss) but anything which is not perfectly addressed will be highlighted. In other words any flaws in the preparation will show more than a paint with less sheen like eggshell or flat. On warm days do not work in the sun if it can be avoided. Your leading edge of wet paint will dry very quickly and you'll attempt to brush out paint which has begun to cure leaving unsightly brush marks. If unavoidable you'll need to work fast and continue painting only that piece of wood you can finish quickly.

    Yes, no need to rinse after you sand it.. clean the railings before you star using a pressure washer and bleach preferably. Don't use a rag as he did to wipe it.Use an old paintbrush as a duster.. but always keep a rag handy when you're painting

    So many things in this video that just isn’t right. Whoever was doing the caulking, obviously doesn’t caulk much. Would never use a sanding sponge on exterior wood. It isn’t durable or stiff enough to withstand the job. Always paint from top down. When painting spindles, it’s always a good idea to have someone on the other side painting so that there is no buildup.

    Question, why does porch rail always chip? Every year or two this deck/porch rail needs redone. Why? So sand it, re paint it. What is being done wrong. Now we used thompson. Behr And others. Will you advise on this. Is this normal?

  • @annietheace7196

    @annietheace7196

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Barb! You are doing all the right things by prepping the surface beforehand by cleaning, sanding, and painting, nice job! Here are a few ideas on why your porch railing paint might be chipping. One, make sure when you are painting your porch when it’s not too hot (over 90 degrees outside or if it’s directly in the sun for at least 5 hours) or cold (below 50 for at least 24 hours). These extreme temperatures don’t allow the paint to dry properly and adhere to the surface. Second, you might want to consider a primer before you apply the paint, this might help. Lastly, another factor is humidity, not sure where you live but if you are in a very humid climate that could cause the paint to not adhere properly also and cause it chip only after a few years. At Ace we carry a paint specifically designed for porches, called “Royal Porch and Floor.” It’s a paint and primer that dries within 4 hours and is specially formulated for covered porches, stairs, floors and patios. I definitely recommend it! Hope that helps!

    The best primer is the paint itself, just water it down so it can seep and you can do up to 2 coats depending on the wood, then go ahead and paint and of course do more than one coat, you will have a very thorough paint job. This tip comes from some contractors who never saw the point of primers for wood and it works well. Nice video. Also for storing paint get one of those lids that open and close easily or the wide mouth ball jar, just beware that glass breaks, my personal favorite is heavier grade plastic containers that the large yogurt or sour cream comes in just make sure the lids work well and then use duck tape to label tops and sides of whats in it, even where you used it.

    If you want your paint job to last, use oil based primer on wood. “Watering down”latex paint is not a primer. Those “Contractors” that gave you that tip obviously know nothing about painting, and are just there to get it done quickly so they can get their money and move on. Their paint job won’t last long at all if that is what they are doing.
