How to Paint Outdoor Railings | Ask This Old House
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video, Ask This Old House painter Mauro Henrique paints an outdoor railing that Nathan just built to match the original railing around a homeowner’s deck.

After Nathan Gilbert installs new deck stair railings, Mauro swings by to finish the job. He uses a sample of the paint from the existing railing and has it color matched at a nearby home center. He then demonstrates how to prime and paint the stairs.

Tools:
Random orbital sander [amzn.to/3us7r6P]
Mini roller [amzn.to/3A0654q]
2 ½” paint brush [amzn.to/3AWo7pF]
Steps for painting outdoor railings
1. Use painter’s tape to protect the deck and the older railing.
2. Put a dropcloth down to catch any debris, primer, or paint.
3. Use 180-grit sandpaper to sand down any imperfections in the wood. Mauro used a sanding block for the balusters and a random orbital sander for the posts and railings to get the job done quicker on the larger areas.
a. Wear a mask and gloves to protect yourself from splinters.
4. Vacuum all the debris.
5. Start priming. Use a mini roller for the larger areas and a paint brush for the areas that are harder to get to.
6. Focus on the bottom wood, that’s where most of the water will end up.
7. Let the primer dry before painting, wait about an hour.
8. Fill in any nail holes with exterior grade wood filler.
9. Paint.
10. Let the first coat dry and add the second coat.
Where to find it?
Mauro wanted to match the paint color of the existing deck, which he did by bringing a small sample of the existing paint to a local paint store. Most paint stores and home centers have machines that can scan a sample and generate a close color match to the paint.
The paint Mauro used for the railings was Behr Premium Plus Exterior Semi-Gloss paint and primer (www.behr.com/consumer), though he also used a separate, oil-based primer for the base coat.

Mauro, we were wondering if you were ever coming back!
As a Professional Painting Contractor that has commented on many of these video's...this is one that is spot on and I have no issues with. Great job.

Can you explain why you wouldn’t fill nail holes first?
@ghpjerry

@@phillyd823 It's an exterior railing, that much detail isn't usually paid for. If we fill those nail holes, how about the rest of the exterior? The Fascia's, Soffit's, Frieze Boards...etc.

The railings look nice and very fancy camera work on this one. Great job.
Quite nice to see the start/finish comparison nowadays! Good job in bringing that!

That was a great paint job. It might be worth more than the rest of the project.
Mauro is the man!
Why did you not list the specific paint you used? You mentioned acrylic, but did not state what sheen or brand you used.
What gloss do you recommend for outside handrail?

@@Guardducks I wasn't talking about order of operation, I was asking about "patching" a brand new exterior railing. Interior, yeah, fill nail holes, sand, seal & paint. Exterior, generally we don't fill the nail holes unless it's a custom job or the trimmer machine gunned everything.
Mauro we missed u!!!!
Why use wood filler on nail holes after you apply primer? To me you would think you will fill first with wood filler and then sand.

The primer is to protect the wood and promote adhesion. It's the same way you use DTM primer for cars before doing any filler. One bonus is it also helps see defects.

Current code is higher than the old rail. Most codes allow anything under 30" to be exempt. Some cities dont care and require everything be current code. In my area, if you change more than 50% of any stair, you have to bring everything up to code. Including the part you are not touching.
@edwardcomiskey6556

The angle of the stairs and code height may have something to do with it. Not the painters issue though
What's with the shallow depth of field and artsy angles? Did someone just graduate with a film school degree but only could get hired on at TOS?
@BoingoCat

Because painting is horribly boring to do and even more boring to watch, the only way to make it almost interesting is a bit of artsy-fartsy camera work. Couldn't you feel the sexual tension when the paint brush almost touched paint roller? Intense!
Why not cover the holes first then prime.....
How much money would it cost to have a painter spend the whole day painting two tiny handrailings?

@NightRaven 630 it was a comment on the inaccuracy of the title. Should have been "outdoor wooden" since it turned out to only be about a sub-section of "outdoor." I'd expected it to include iron railings, and in that case, some discussion of rustproofing.
This is weird, I'm not expecting all of these artsy shots from a TOH video...
@majahanson311
2 жыл бұрын
I found it irritating. Like the shot where they're rolling the railing just inches from each other. People don't actually work like that. That was clearly staged for the shot. And did they really not sand the wood filler before applying the paint, or was that just edited out because the producer thought it was boring? These kinds of artistic choices are a corruption of the how-to purpose of these videos
