How to paint Horus Heresy Imperial Fists Legionary | Duncan Rhodes
Ойындар
The Imperial Fists, whether you are collecting 40K or Heresy, look fantastic on the tabletop. Yellow, though, has a reputation for being rather difficult to paint and is pretty unforgiving but in this tutorial, we show you how to get a great yellow easily (perfect for large Horus Heresy Legions )as well as how to fix any mistakes you may make when painting the yellow. As usual, all the techniques and the colour palette demonstrated in this tutorial can be used on a wide range of miniatures from your favourite studios.

I'm six minutes in but I had to stop and just say THANK YOU for actually demonstrating a mistake (the black paint) and then how to fix it. So many other videos on KZread warn against making this mistake, and discuss how to fix it, but seeing you actually go through the process isn't just useful, it's oddly reassuring to see an expert make and fix a mistake, even if it's demonstrative. Thank you!

Ive pretty much been doing this, but I must say, that i find it A LOT easier to apply the black to the joints, then neaten up the undercoat, and THEN go with the yellow contrast. Can always fix the black up a bit again after. Youll get a lot less mistakes along the way I find.

As someone who only recently got into painting minis I really appreciate you for showing mistakes that can and for me will happen. I have watched many videos on painting and tricks but rarely seen how to fix mistakes such as black on yellow. Should really help me tidy up my minis :)

Welcome to the hobby! Everyone makes mistakes, they are a fact of painting. Most important thing to do is exactly what Duncan explained: stay calm, clean off what you can & fix it later. Any mistake can be fixed. Happy painting!
Absolutely brilliant again Duncan. What I love about your painting videos is they are easy to follow, don't require super-advanced techniques but still provide absolutely superb results. This is probably one of the most efficient imperial fist colour schemes I've seen and that contrast base/shade step with the layer paint finish is a total 'light bulb' moment for me! I loved the idea of contrast but always shyed away from the finish which, for me, always reflected the minimal effort that was applied yet I still love the paints - this is an approach (which seems so logical now) that i will apply over and over again now I've seen it. Thank you Duncan - absolute gem of the community :-)
Been watching your tutorials since the old days when you were with GW, hands down you have the best tutorials and I really appreciate lately you speaking more about mistakes and how to actually fix them. The demonstration was super helpful as well because once you got to the part about black after all the yellow done, I already knew I would be making at least three mistakes when painting those small parts. One day I will have to try your paint range because, well, its Duncan.
Great guide Duncan. I'm still curious to see how the upcoming "Imperial Fists" Yellow contrast over the new White Scars spray will compare to Iyanden over Wraithbone.

Early results I have seen on the FB groups are promising. I just grabbed a pot of it to try. I am wondering if the better play might be to do a preshade over a light primer, and then throw the Imperial Fists Contrast right over as your main final layer. Maybe do a few highlights to taste.

Late reply, but I've had good success using Chapter Master Valrak's method which is to do White Scars to Avarland Sunset to Imperial Fists. I am currently trying out pre-shading or, "reverse Zenithal," with a warm brown or red-brown contrast or shade. Still figuring out how well any of that works.
Watching you has made me want to get right back into collecting and painting again, you are truly amazing at what you do! Horus was outstanding. I'm praying one day you do something like a sisters of battle in a sacred rose theme as white is something i've always struggled to pull off!
Incredible looking yellow with so little work!

Yes, it's an effectively simple technique 😊
Thanks @Duncan for this video. Fixing mistakes it's a very good topics for beginners like me ! 😁
Demonstrating fixing the mistake (rather than not making the mistake and trying to explain how to fix them without having any visual) was a very nice touch :)
That casual and deliberate "mistake" when painting the black. What an absolute mad-lad! I remember when painting yellow seemed impossible. I love IF but my first chapter had black armor. You can probably guess why! Now with so many tools and resources painting great looking minis is more accessible than ever. The wraithbone trick is super useful as well. A: for the obvious reason you just taught me but also because that's the colour I imagine Ceramite to be so it will be a handy paint to use for weathering. cracking content as always, Duncan!
I always wondered how that yellow contrast was supposed to be used. You just saved me a ton of time on my lamenters
Great video, guys! I really appreciate you covering the rationale behind your approach and providing visual examples of how to correct or minimize mistakes. Keep up the awesome work!

Really excited with how well the layer over the contrast turned out! I've been using Averland Sunset as my base color over a dark brown/off-white zenithal prime, but that looks fantastic and I'm going to try this on my new Mark VI Tacticals.
Thank you for another great tutorial! I really liked when you showed how to fix mistake when using contrast paints!
Thanks for showing how to fix those mistakes. Most channels just say don't worry about mistakes, you can fix them later, but never really mention how to actually do it.
Wow, those first two steps make it look fantastic full stop! I have always been "Fists curious", but the yellow scheme was a turnoff! This looks doable!
Saved, going to mix this with my method and I know it's going to work. Thanks for the lesson!

I was looking for a different tutorial but I found this one. Very nice armour painting method. I remember when I have found your old tutorial since you were still in GW. You used Averland sunset (my favourite colour) as a base, ushabti bone as a drybrush and Casandora yellow as a finish. Then optional dorn yellow for highlights. I've never forgot this method and I'm using it since then. So I just wanted to say thank you for this old tutorial.

The painting knowledge is invaluable. Thank you for this. But the hit on my wallet for the miniatures that I now want to paint? Oooffff! Keep up the great work!
Thanks also for suggesting the Artists Opus brushes which come in a more traditional numbered system of sizes, like the old Humbrol brushes I used when I was first painting miniatures
This is going to be my first foray into painting miniatures. Going to get a MKVI Tactical Squad and follow this colour scheme, thanks for laying it all out so simply!

"Be as neat as possible." Words to live by.
Here's a neat trick about painting yellow. Do not prime in black, what you want to do is prime in PINK with a zenithal highlight of ivory on the top. So just grab a pink krylon and go to town, trust me it works.

I learned a lot by your videos Duncan. Two programes I like is yours and Jamie Oliver food programes.. Masters in your own fields :-)
OK I think I've found my favoured method to painting Fists. I've been looking at so many methods many of which leave them too dark or over detailed. This method gives them a nice bright finish and isn't overly complicated. The only downside is I'm allergic to Wraithbone spray. I think I'll test this out on some Phalanx Warders I'm using as tester models. The last method I used, for my old heresy fists, was the one you painted on an old GW advent calendar video.
Can't wait to try most of this on an Imperial Fists 30k Tactical KT.
I was curious how you were gonna handle the yellow. The layering up from contrast trick is basically what I guessed you'd do. It really does make things easier. Writing down that trick for cleaning up mistakes on yellow though. Because it really does make the mistake invisible. I'm also quite curious how the newly announced Imperial Fist Yellow contrast paint will look. It might not look too different with this technique, but could be very suitable for other schemes.
Way better than the one GW put up. They should be ashamed of the lvl of that video. Thanks Duncan, great one!
It is crazy to see the difference between Iyanden Yellow and the new Imperial Fist contrast, the new yellow is soooo smooth and perfectly applies, even on flat surfaces. Incredible medium, great pigment. I think Iyanden Yellow's better at staining the recesses but the finish on Imperial Fist is so perfect, I don't mind going in myself to punch them up a bit if necessary.
Very smooth yellow. I wonder how well this will work with the new contrast yellows

Really good guide Duncan, could you perhaps cover off the benefits of zenithal highlighting for hard to paint colours at some point would be really interested to see your take on it.
Great tutorial, that yellow looks really crisp! Would you recommend the same process for painting Imperial Fists vehicles too, or will the contrast paint pool too much on the large, flat panels?
Awesome paint job, Duncan! I love your videos. I need to study them, as I am still a novice at painting miniatures, and would love to be as close as your skill level as I can. Keep up the great work you do. It's appreciated greatly.
In the new wave of contrast they did release a new yellow which I think also works quite well

Great videos as always... What are your thoughts on airbrushing? Is there any advantage on this kind of miniature compared to normal brush painting?
Great tips as always, thanks Duncan!
With the Corvus Black that didn't wash off the yellow armour, it could be a battle effect of scorched marks or soot fire when the space marine marches on the battle field. Or do you need a darker brown paint mixed with medium? Yes, I had to wash the mistakes off some parts of my models when I accidently paint over an area I already painted. Your Imperial Fist turned out well to serve alongside Rogal Dorn against the Warmaster.
I find it really hard to change my style now. Been doing it since like the 1980s. Its sort of a bit of an over wrought style shall we say lol not the best. I need to go back to basics again I think. I can't get my head around airbrushing so. I need to get to grips with the contrast paints as well. Cheers Duncan
If I used Baal Red contrast for painting my Blood Angels, would you suggest basing it white to give as bright of a colour as possible? And also if the first coat of it doesn’t dry what’s the best paint to match it up nicely?
This will be great on the bases of some Iron Warriors.
Yriel Yellow seems like a perfect match for Iyanden Yellow. Do all the contrast paints have such close matching layer paints? Is there a list of them somewhere? That would be wildly helpful.
I want to ask, how did you managed paint that bolter from its backside? I never glue guns like this and usually paint them in hand, but Iam curious about this one Also great work, your vids really help me

Hey Duncan, would love to see your review of Citadel's new expansion of the Contrast range when it comes out in a couple weeks. Were you invited along to the preview event?
sorry for the off topic question but do you know off the top of your head what are the specific colours for the Sept Markings for the Farsight Enclaves for the Tau?
Oh man....this is so handy. I don't have a yriel yellow...I'll have to figure out an alternative
Would love to see a Duncan crimson fist ✊
Great technique for yellow. This might seem like a silly question but you use a wet pallet for parts of the video but at the beginning is that a kitchen/bathroom tile you use as a pallet?
Nice video do you think you will do a alpha legion one? As I haven't found one on your channel
Would you suggest the new imperial fists contrast instead or continue with the current one?
Quite the coincidence that when I finally decide to get started on an Imperial Fists army you release a tutorial on Rogal Dorn and their power armor. Thank you.
Мегахарош. Прям респект тебе, мен.🤘🏻
Sorry if this is a really daft question but; why not apply the black first then the yellow? Just seems like a lot to have to apply 3 paints, some of which multiple times, when the black spills onto the yellow. Wouldn't you only have to apply the black twice if the yellow spilled onto the black?
it seems like every imperial fist tutorial i find is always with contrast; kinda makes me feel like i got that averland sunset for nothing. speaking of contrast, are you excited/curious about the new paints from gw? do you want to do a testing review?
I don't even paint Imperial Fists (Dark Angels 🤘) but this was a great tutorial. I appreciate that you show how to fix your mistakes!
Finally a good imperial fist tutorial thanks Duncan

Have you ever considered using mephiston red as the base with thin costs of averland sunset to build the color
I’ve used so many of your videos to paint my armies would love you to do one for Ahriman 🙏🏻
It's funny but I've been in thr hobby since the mid 1990s and no one told me these things . I've been painting with unthinned paints for too long . It's a bit of a godsend that videos like this exist now to take out the guess work.
What about the new contrasts for this job Duncan? Great video anyway
Can I ask why you don't do the black details first? Feels like you'd have fewer errors on the yellow if you did the soft details first? Is it to make the yellow base coat faster?
you are truly the bob ross of mini painting
Hi Duncan! Will you be releasing the SoH tutorial on KZread? Thanks

How do you paint the chest aquila on say a primaris intercessor ?
Super new to the hobby. So this might be a stupid question. Can i give these guys weapons from 40k? Wanting to use the HH models for kill team but want them to have the correct weapons
I’ve thinned down the paints however I keep failing to get a smooth coat with the yriel yellow, do you have any advice?
Love the tutorial, but how can we apply it to vehicles?
Even though I don’t think Imperial Fists go together with MK6 armour, this model came out looking nice.
do u think u could do salamanders and shoe how to do flames on em and maybe the cracked lava look u can do on there armor
With the backpack being all black and silver would it not be easier to just leave it off and paint them separately?
Your video has helped me overcome my fear of yellow especially seeing how easy it is to fix a mistake. I just hope I can spot the mistakes early! Usually it's too late when I find them. Going with Fists & Sons of Horus with the new box set.
Great video as always, dunc!
What you think about the Imperial Fist contrast paint, those it work instead if the other contrast in this video?
Will you ever do a video on Mortarion, pre hairasy?
What basing material did you use to make the base?
We all know that Duncan sold his soul to the Slanesh and that's why he paint so great :D
I think the most important thing about painting yellow is accept that it’s not going to be quick. The time investment will be worth it but you’re not going to paint them anywhere near as quickly as Ultramarines.
