How to paint ghost flames with spray cans
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
IMPORTANT: Since the filming of this video, candy paint has become available in spray can format.
This video shows a new technique that I came up with for painting a form of ghost flame with spray cans. Obviously you can achieve superior results using proper spray equipment, but this is still a fun an interesting technique to try out.
Hopefully this technique will open up some possibilities for ghosting effects for anyone who is restricted to doing their spraying with cans.
The paints that I use in this video are made by Rustoleum. Other brands such as Krylon, Tremclad, Molotow, or others can be used as long as you can find a translucent colour that meets your needs.
Candy paints, which are completely transparent, are now available. House of Kolor carries a high quality version. They refer to them as Kandy.
You will be able to achieve superior results as demonstrated on the reverse of the panel if you become proficient with an airbrush and paint gun. The back of the panel was painted using AutoAir and PPG paints, as well as a Devilbiss paint gun and Iwata airbrush.
The process for achieving this kind of effect with spray cans involved creating a high contrast image using a dark background and light foreground, or the opposite. Next you paint over it with a semi-transparent colour such as the rustoleum metallic paint that I used in this video. I chose the racing green colour, and used it as the background as well. You can also just do your image in black and white and then go over it with your top colour.

You're welcome. I'm pretty pleased that it worked out so well. I wasn't sure when I thought it up if it was going to be effective at all.
Thank you. Glad you think so.

Thanks for your comment doodr. If you take a look at some of my more recent work, I make it more clear that a mask is necessary. I sometimes don't wear one when filming portions of my videos when I'm trying to explain things while spraying, but I always encourage others to use protection. I used to assume that people already knew that, but I've started harping on it more lately.
I was a conventional spray painter for 30 years. I've applied over 70 different types of coatings, using Devilbiss and Binks guns/ pots. I was impressed with your knowledge and skillset.

Thank you; I'm glad to hear that I haven't been misleading people inadvertently.
@nick osbourn I would definitely suggest an airbrush, but you wouldn't do it after a full brand new paint job, you would do it partway through the paintjob (aka before the clear coating stage).

Thank you for your feedback. The company that I work for purchases this dibond in four foot by eight foot sheets. We use it to make signs and other things. I cut sections off of those when I need them for painting. The same applies to aluminum and steel.

Thanks for the great video. I plan on doing this to my motorcycle. Let's hope this turns out half as good as it is in my mind.
Rustoleum's colorshift paint is designed to go over a black base. It would create an interesting effect in this situation, but if you mean to use it instead of the green it won't be much of a ghosted effect. It doesn't really show up over white.
Yes. That is their purpose; to remove dust between coats and before clear coating. Great for airbrushing when you get overspray. You can get them at many hardware stores and almost any automotive paint store. Home depot should have them.
That would look good on a door because of the angles and the door swing ...thnkx...
Very well done video thanks.

Thanks for the fast answer so if I get it right For the one with the gems shift color You have a black surface then layers metallic? Then a transparent gem shift? And then metallic again? Or do I miss something?
@BradAngove

If you're looking to do a ghosted gem shift design you would leave out the metallic after. Start with the black, put on your metallic, then use a gem shift colour as close to that as possible to create your design.

@Brad Angove do you have a video that explains how you're painting the flames? You go into super speed mode without explaining what you do with that cardboard.
@BradAngove
7 жыл бұрын
I don't have a video explaining how to paint the pattern. I simply use the cardboard to block paint from hitting certain areas, thus creating those curves. If you want a thin line, you can get it by spraying at an angle against the cardboard, and letting the paint deflect down onto the surface.
Wondering if you got around to trying out the "new" color-shifting" paints this decade, since they're awesome.
@BradAngove
2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think I’ve tried any from this decade.
Hey Brad do you think it would be a good idea to do this kinda thing on old bike fairings that i have? because i dont have the time to find steel or sign material. so thought it would be a good idea to use bike panels.
@BradAngove
10 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a great place to do it, as long as you prep it properly. If you are planning on actually using it on a bike you might want to consider not using spray cans though.
I am building a mini bike frame from scratch and I am going to take a shot at painting something like the on the fuel tank . what does a decent airbrush go for? love your vids!!!
@BradAngove
7 жыл бұрын
+Nancy Jackson You can get a reasonable dual action airbrush for around 100$ Canadian these days if I'm not mistaken.
You can also use the colorshift from rustoleum will make it pop
Interesting!! I'm having a friend of mine airbrush flames on my bike. To safe money he's letting me do all the prep work on the tank. Do you suggest sandblasting or aircraft stripper. We tried to use the base under the old paint but it's splitting everywhere now that the art and clear is all done. Using cobalt blue but seeing light blue dots appearing as well. Advice for me ???
@BradAngove
9 жыл бұрын
Andrew Blackwell Normally I would just sand back the gloss and paint over the old job. If you've got to take the paint off because there are problems with it I would go with sandblasting (only if the tank is metal of course). If the parts are plastic you can't really use sandblasting or aircraft stripper. Both would ruin it. If the tank is metal, you can sandblast it and then prime it and have your friend airbrush it from there.
damn thats awesome
So how would you fix the obvious tiger stripes you have in that panel?
very cool, I'm not a painter and no nothing about paint but thinking about trying it on small projects for fun. wonder about the choice of white paint, would using a pearl white have any different effect on the look of it or would the metallic just cover that up and just show the white. got the idea from a friends HD, it has a gold pearl white paint on it..
@BradAngove
8 жыл бұрын
+gonzosc1 Pearl white is very nice, but I doubt that you would notice much of a difference in this case. The metallic colour that I put over it has it's own pearl, which gives the white that sparkling look in the end regardless. I'm using the white exclusively for contrast in this specific paint job.
Thanks
This guy is awsome
Cool, as a beginner I would like to do the same type effect ghost smoke as you did, like the other side of the board that you did with a air brush. Where I live it is a small town and very Limited on any type of art equipment and it would take me 2 hour rid to the nears city, so I know wouldn't be able to find the the paint you have mentioned where i live .so if I go to a hardware store and try to find something as close to the receipt, what will it be by your professional view, or what would MacGyver use beside chilling gum and duct tape.
@BradAngove
10 жыл бұрын
The stuff that I use is available online if you're interested. I've never found paint at a hardware store that I would put through my airbrush, but maybe you could put some enamel through a small paint gun if you thin it a little with paint thinner or mineral spirits. I believe MacGyver would use a car battery, some paper clips, and a penny or two.
A taped pattern would probably give a better effect with this spray can method, because of the control like you said. Still another skill to learn, always good. Keep having fun!
@BradAngove
7 жыл бұрын
The taped pattern would definitely give a different effect, and would be much easier to control particularly for beginners. Another option for the freehand method would be to purchase better caps for more control.
Fair enough. Make sure you prep it properly and be careful with your clear coating; you should be fine.
do you have any ideas for flames on a gsxr 600 that's painted with the new camaro synergy green in base coat? What would in your opinion be the best color choice for the flames
@BradAngove
8 жыл бұрын
+Eric Brennon Hi Eric. I believe that ghost flames are supposed to blend in, so I guess you would either do them in a candy color close to the synergy green color, or do them lightly in white like I did here and then go over them again with that synergy green. I would be very hesitant to use spray cans on a motorcycle though if that's what you're intending.
good job

Hi Brad, I know you said you used no liquid on tack cloth to clean over spray dust, but it looks wet after the tack cloth passes over panel... i am painting a yamaha boat motor cover (cowl). Having trouble keeping a wet edge due to so many different planes and the oval shape of the cowl. Having trouble with overspray drying and sticking before getting to the next adjoining surface... also did you ever do video on the best spray equipment to do small to large surfaces?
@BradAngove
8 жыл бұрын
+John Hill It's not wet, it's just clean. The white dust is coming off and letting you see the clean darker green color. If you have different panes and you're having trouble with overspray you can mask off the ones you aren't painting and do them one at a time. Painting over overspray also isn't a big deal if you're going over it with an opaque color. It's best to take off what you can with a tack cloth, but don't worry about it too much. I don't have a video about what spray equipment is best for specific sizes of surfaces. A proper paint gun can be adjusted to do most surfaces regardless of size.
Awesome video! Do you have to use white? Or will it work with a black and transparent blue?
@BradAngove
6 жыл бұрын
It has to contrast in order to show through the semi-transparent. It will depend on what your background colour is.
Idk I tried it. I did hot rod flames.. Primer, base black, sprayed metallic, taped my flames, sprayed white, sprayed metallic then clear. But the white still shows threw pretty good. Should I not go heavy on white and just mist it more or should I use a darker color like black again so they dissappeAr on different angles? I'm confused. Lol
@BradAngove
10 жыл бұрын
There are two easy things that you can do to increase the subtlety of the effect. You can use a colour other than white for you flame (maybe a light green, or even black if you want; every colour will give a different effect), or you can apply another coat of the metallic paint after. It gets more opaque as you build it up, so once you've taken off you tape for the white, do an extra coat of the metallic to push the white back further.
Holy Sh!t I'm digging the back of that test panel.

Is the cloth is applied to any solution or something to get rid of overspray?
@BradAngove

I'm a little confused by your question. The tack cloth is used between coats to clean off dust and overspray. You should be able to use it between any coats that are dry. It is often used after airbrush work to clean off overspray.
Rustoleum makes pearls now
Unfortunately, the rattle cans produced very distinct spray lines despite the fact you sprayed in both directions for to the round pattern of the nozzle. A change to an oval pattern nozzle wood help there significantly. Side B looks great! Very sweet effect. 😀👍

So if i layed a few coats of metallic pearl black. Then did a design using orange matte opaque and white matte opaque. Will these colors have enough contrast to "ghost" when using the metallic pearl black?
@BradAngove
9 жыл бұрын
MrForthcoming They might, depending on what orange you use. Black is a difficult colour to do ghost flames in because it naturally has more opacity, so you need higher contrast under it. The orange probably won't look much like orange anymore with a layer of black on it though.
@MrForthcoming

I'm glad you like the video. I'm a little confused about what you are going for. Do you mean that you want red flames on black? Or that you want to use a black undercoat and then paint the fender red and have hot-rod style ghost flames on it? You can get a metallic red just like the green that I used from home depot and follow the same process as in this video (except you will want to tape out your flames if you want hot-rod style). Or you can do a different version using house of colour spray cans. Which I will tell you where to get if you want to go that route.
That black and white border is nice. Hope you don't mind but I'm going to copy that :)
