I appreciate it. I’m just getting into it. I like his trusty shell back comment! I became a shell back in 1980! I was a snipe , he will know what that means! Go navy! And I’m retired law-enforcement also! My carvings sell but compared to you guys I suck ! I started of off carving spoons, and I have sold several hundred! Trying to get into characters! I sold them, but they weren’t what I I would call good! Still going to forge a head! thank you, gentlemen. I enjoyed the video.

Way to go Pat!!! Miss seeing everyone at the carving club in Lexington. Enjoyed your video! Good to see you even if it is in a video. I don’t have any time carving these days because of looking after my Alzheimer’s mom; but like you, I watch a lot of KZread videos. One can learn so much. Keep carving! Susan

I completely agree… I’m fact when I first began, I used firewood so that I didn’t care so much about my results… it’s a time behind your tools kind of thing … great job guys

Morning every one, dose any one know of a wood carving group in the state of LA? Thank you sir for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. I heard somewhere that children’s water colors may be a good idea to paint with, is it true or something to stay away from? And how do you clean ( like get the peace ready for painting) do you use a brush to get the splinters off or sand paper?

Enjoyed seeing the various finishing procedures Pat used. It would be nice if you/he recapped the brands for each mixture used. Thanks again

I’m glad you enjoyed the demo. All carvings had a base coat of minwax 209 natural. Then they were painted with thin acrylic paints. The demo piece went on to shade deep crevices and features with a darker paint, I think I used wrought iron. Once dry the, after the zoom ended, demo piece had a matte varnish by deco art applied. All other pieces, once painted had 3 coats of a matte sealer applied before antiquing. The three types of antiquing I used were; 1. a mix of watco dark and watco natural oil. 2. A mix of Briwax golden oak and Howard’s feed and wax 3. A mix of minwax aged oak diluted with mineral spirits. All those mixes are mixed to what you like, you can go darker or lighter. I’d recommend lighter and add another coat if you want. I hope that helps.

How long do you have to wait for the min wax finish to dry??

  • @patcoffey8050

I personally let it dry overnight but you can paint it “wet”. I’d give it 5 minutes to let it soak in but after that you can paint on it. Search for Pete LeClairs painting video, he paints wet.
