The best way to paint light in watercolor is to paint dark around it. In this demonstration I capture the bright evening light in this Autumn scene. I show you step-by-step how to paint this scene from the first wash to the end.

I love these longer format type videos, really able to learn a lot from them! thank you :)
Love seeing your reference photo as you paint.
I congratulate you Matthew, few watercolorists are as good as you. Thank you very much.😊
Thanks Matt your instructions are wonderful and your easy going manor are a delight , thank you for taking the time to show us your outstanding talent .
love the atmosphere you have created
Another great demonstration, thanks so much for sharing.
Did I already say this, you are magical.
It was very helpful to watch you mix and paint. TY for telling us your thoughts and naming each paint. That last layer of dark on the bottom did an amazing amount to make the sun glow. The final painting has a wonderful "heading home for dinner and family time" feel to it.
Adding that last glaze in the foreground really showed confidence and made a good painting better. I love that you took an ordinary subject and turned it into a work of art. Great video, very concise and just slow and detailed enough to be of great help to a novice. Thank you.
Thank you so, so much! I appreciate you doing the whole painting!!!

Welcome!
Hiya Matthew, thanks very much for another wonderful tutorial, these are so incredibly helpful being able to not only see but listening to your thoughts on the process as you work. Take care, David.
Very helpful, thanks - particularly as it looks so different when wet from dry - you need to have confidence to let it develop!
Thank you Matthew for your great videos. Your explanation and demonstrations are very easy to follow I learn so much. Happy thanksgiving to you and your family

Hi Matt, as always, a great demo. I particularly liked the sky. I'm going to copy that! as for other videos, I would love to see a video about the uses of lavender. It is not a colour I use but it seems to have multiple uses. Could you explore your mixes using this colour?

Lavender intrigues me too and it would be really interesting to see how it works with different colour mixes.
Thank you Matthew! I’m finally starting to get the point that I needn’t be a slave to laboriously trying to copy the details of a reference. Your color mixes were unexpected - but they worked, I need to try mine on a scrap. No tape! Does wetting the back sufficiently glue paper to board to stop buckling? Is your board slightly tilted? Rewatching and jotting down mixes. Thanks for not editing out wiping out the bad puddle .
very nice painting !
I had a problem in one my paintings with warm back lights. I'm going to paint it again with your technique, thanks for your wonderful instruction
I just found your channel. I am loving learning in real time. I see you have several great brushes. Can you detail what these are specifically. I have a couple of Perlas, bought an 16 aquario, but what is the Chinese one and the one with dark handle?
Vary vary important nowlage sir
Un peu d'ombre de lumière le savoir faire et l'alchimie opère. BRAVO
Great lessons, and inspiration! Question, in painting a sunset how do u get more intense colors? Also where can I purchase neutral tint? Thank You
I love your art work, but could you explain please way you have light on the right side of the car, if the sun on the left side of the picture?
Thanks

Adding commentary….what are you using for pencil, where did you get the small natural sponge and more fully explain the why for wetting the paper before starting. I assume the pencil work first?
What weight of paper are you using and do you stretch it first? Thanks Matthew.
I was wondering if you own the copyright on all your reference photos? Your photos are all so good. Are you a photographer? If so, what camera do you use? I'm assuming its a SLR, digital and not just your cell phone.
Do you Paint with the inclined easel or horizontal?
How do you keep your paper flat after it dries? I like painting with the back and front of the paper wet but it bends after drying and painting further is difficult. I am using 100% cotton, 300gr paper.
Do you tape your paper, or do you use a 640 that doesn't need it?
