Love this! I have to agree with you about Bretons. I was an exchange student and I stayed in Noyal sur Villaine. This was back in the 70s. At 5’7” I was taller than everyone. When my dad came to visit it went around the village like a wildfire. “Look at the American! Qu’il est grand! Dad was six feet tall. 😂😂

Oh yes, I can imagine!!! A man standing only 5ft high is not at all unusual. I‘m only 5ft 3ins and I‘m certainly not seen as short here. Apart from people’s height, Brittany has changed a lot though since the 70s!

Diane, I feel like I repeat myself constantly when I leave you daily comments, but you so deserve them and it just doesn't feel right not to tell you (even though I know I am repeating myself) how much I enjoy your tutorials. I have a daily morning routine of making my slow pour over coffee and sipping it while I watch you paint and hear you share your comments and thoughts. Your brush strokes are so relaxing to watch and your voice so calming. Then you mix it up with your fun humor, "the brush police." You honestly are so fun to hang out with and you have a gift of really making your followers feel that you are hanging with us. Pine cones are one of my favorite, along with acorns and oak leaves. You really made this one beautiful, and achievable and I thank you as always. So there you go...another repetitive comment from one of your many loyal fans. Tamsin, beautiful photography and sound. Carolyn please don't think of stopping making your comments! I really enjoy reading them, and for me also it's a morning routine with my first cup of coffee while I feed Arthur in the studio! So motivating and positive to have such detailed and supportive comments to start the day! Thank you again for every word, it does not go unappreciated, and not at all repetitive. Tamsin feels the same way, and thanks you too. I wonder what the winter theme will bring too. I never know what is going to come out the end of the brush, water brush or trad brush!! White Pines are common around me and they are elegant. The needles are softly flexible, not prickly to handle. It's the only pine whose needles grow in bundles if 5 - which you can remember because of the 5 letters in the name: w-h-i-t-e. Thanks for the tutorial.

We all learn by doing, and art especially is an organic process. When I start a painting, whether on or off video, I never know where it will go. I never even TRY to know where it will go. And that's the skill I want you all to develop. That way you'll find your own style.

Ha! Tidy except for your bedroom. I know the feeling. QOR paints have a drying shift as well. Earth tones I think shift more when drying. W&N has the most vibrant burnt sienna I've found. There's a brand from the Ukrainian I found on Amazon US that has very little shift. It's called ROSA , it's honey based and very affordable but only available in full pans not tubes. Good pigment strength and rewets easily. Though they do use PG8 which is not particularly lightfast for a green. The QOR high chroma set of 6 is fun. Thanks Diane. I very much enjoy painting with you.

Diane, I love your ramblings. I understand completely. LOL. I struggled before Christmas to teach myself to draw a pine cone. Drove myself crazy trying to make it perfect. I love 'impression' painting but it is hard. Like you said trying to connect the dots...... TIP: I stuck the handle of a paint brush in a pencil sharpener. It wasn't doing anything else, so I made use of it LOL.

I enjoyed watching you paint the pine cone Diane. I’ll give it a go with my Windsor and Newton watercolor. I find W&N the best for rich, natural pigment that lightens some but not too much. I laughed out loud when you said “I don’t want to talk about it.” How many times I’ve felt that way when painting! I’m grateful to you and all the other watercolorists on KZread that share your knowledge. I don’t think I’d be very good at it since I don’t enjoy talking while I paint, unless I’m yelling at a piece that isn’t turning out the way I’d planned, lol. Watercolor truly has a mind of its own. Hi Rita, thanks for your lovely comment! I have never really complained about the fading of W&N, just took it into consideration when painting, knowing it would dry several shades lighter. But after using the Viviva sheets for a while I notice the difference much more. Perhaps I'm thinking that with all the technological advances science has brought, it is less than reasonable to still use binders developed essentially in the 18th century? I haven't really thought about it like that before, as I am really a traditionalist and I like the old ways of doing things. So I'll let W&N carry on doing what they do best, and I do like their subtle colors, and maybe I'll invest in a set of Qor and see how that goes! Very happy to share my gems of "wisdom" with you - that's what it's all about, isn't it! P.S. a year ago I was cringing at the thought of talking through my videos. You do get used to it eventually!!! Happy painting!

Yes. I think that's true in many cases though. We always wish we had what we don't possess. Heck! I wish I could have thick hair and weigh 125 lbs. LOL

Hi Diane, I’d recommend you try the QoR Earth Set first, and the High Chroma Set, of course. Do not be put off by the 5ml tube size in these sets, I can assure you from my own experience that the pigment is so intense you will use significantly less paint. People complain about the tube size vs price BUT you’ll ultimately get 2 - 3X more painting out of a QoR tube compared to a tube of DS, MG, or WN. I’m truly looking forward to watching you discover the beauty and unique quirks of painting with QoR, I think you’ll love it! Take Care.

Thanks so much for the recommendation and thoughts about the Qor paints. I'll definitely give them a try! I will wait till after my birthday next week just in case anyone has bought me a set, and then if not I'll go ahead and order some. I'm not put off by the small tubes, I usually buy 5ml tubes anyway and they last quite a while for me in any case. Thanks again, very helpful!!

Your pine cone is soooooo Beautiful. I love the simplicity of it! I am looking forward to getting the summer" hedge grove," was it(?) book. I have TV and sound going, my own selective hearing loss going and had the computer sound a little low so I may have gotten the name of the book wrong. It's Christmas night here in USA and I'm thinking of your summer book full of your wonderful drawings! Me too!! We usually have a collection of them near the fireplace but I think we had to burn them last year because the dogs were eating them!

@@DianeAntoneStudio When I lived in New England, my dog used to love to eat them (outside) - so there must be something that attracts them. They're great for firestarters, and you can add some wax to them to make them pretty and be even more flammable! LOL! xx

Thankyou for the lovely tutorial. I've been training myself to paint on an iPad using Adobe Fresco while following painter's videos. It's a great way to learn the software. If my orange tabby were better behaved I'd try regular paints but that would be very trying with him, he has to be in the middle of anything I'm doing.

Glad it was helpful! Arthur is the same, he wants to interfere, but when he goes to sleep in his basket I can get on with things! I have adobe but I haven't heard of fresco. I'll have to take a look! I did try digital painting a few years ago but gave it up after a while.

You can do the green lines with brushs too ha? And you can start painting first no drawing. If that was a paint pen or not or was it a fancy brush?

When examining a white pine the needles are in bunches of 5 and at the base it looks.like.they are connected with small.light brown ice cream.cone gathering them. But you did nail.the pine cone.
