How to paint a model car without stinking up the house!

Ойын-сауық

Hello everyone and welcome to Angelo's Workbench. In this video I go through an entire build start to finish using water-based paints thus reducing the amount of odors during the build. I will use the Atlantis Models 1/32 Pontiac Firebird. Visit their website here: atlantis-models.com/
Hit me up with any questions or comments and thanks for watching!

    Hey Angelo, great videos. You are giving me the itch to build again, haven't since I was about 12 or 13, I'm 62 now and airbrushing as a hobby. BTW, that trigger airbrush dripping problem you have. I'm guessing you haven't pulled it down for cleaning yet, since you are spraying water base. Some manufactures ship their airbrushes with the needles pulled back from the nozzle, to avoid nozzle/needle damage in shipping, make sure the needle is seated properly inside the nozzle. The nozzle could be loose or the seal if it has one is split or missing,worse case the nozzle tip may be damaged or made wrong. Thanks again.

    Been a long time since anyone doing much about airbrushing with water based. Barbatos Rex has excellent video about craft acrylic and water based paints but not many people about doing a model car, and most are really old posts. I have to use only true acrylics due to family health issues, so have been perfecting my skills on airbrushing with them. Chris Chapman his videos were great but he seems to be gone. One only has to remember to add a clear coat afterward, usually Pledge Clear. Thanks for your effort......

    Yeah side mirrors are a pain I always knocked mine off if I didn't put them on last but I use painters tape just a little to hold them in place then be careful with liquid cement not to apply too much so it runs and just give it a little tap at the contact point so far so good an they stay in place an don't have to be fiddled with them when good an dry don't push tape on to hard just enough to hold it in place .

    Angelo, you're bringing out the kid in me big time. What glue are you using ? Is it as good as the old Testors in the orange tube ? How well does it stick / bond to the water base paints ? Oh yeah I forgot to mention, I use to paint the lettering on the tires ( all the way down to the tire pressure on some) and body labeling ( like the Pontiac ) on back of your model and gauge needles, radio etc. I used a Testors paint brush, that I cut all but 3 or 4 hairs off of or a tooth pick I'd sharpen to a needle point, with my trusty pocket knife But that was when I was somewhere between 9 and 13 years old, when I could actually hold a steady hand and see the object in my fingers well, and I didn't have table magnifiers back then . Now at 62, I'd need a microscope and 4 steady hands...lmao.

    Hi Angelo Thank you for your patience with these questions. You mentioned in the video that you’ve been using Createx for awhile now hence the questions. I enjoy experimenting with new acrylics. I want to spray a 1/25th scale truck with Createx Pearl blue. Would you spray the blue directly over black primer or would you spray black primer, then black opaque, then the Pearl blue?

  • @AngelosWorkbench

    @AngelosWorkbench

    Hey Jim no problem. I’d shoot the blue pearl over a white primer. I did a 63 split window corvette a while back in the createx blue pearl. Check out my video I posted with pics of all my quarantine builds - it’s in there.

    Great video Angelo!! I have used acrylics for 2 years because I’m not able to vent outside. I may have to try the Createx colors. I currently use acrylic craft paints thinned with washer fluid (alcohol) or Tamiya thinned with Tamiya thinner. What do you use to clean the airbrush between colors? Do you use the same cleaning method after the clear coat? Thanks for your help. Once again Great video!

    One more question Angelo. How many coats of color and clear coats do you normally use? I understand the more coats of color will likely deepen the color. How many coats did you do on the Firebird and how many coats of clear did you use? Thanks Angelo, you’re the best!

  • @AngelosWorkbench

    @AngelosWorkbench

    2 жыл бұрын

    The Firebird got two coats of white and two coats of clear. That’s what I usually use unless it’s a candy color which needs several more light coats. I hope this helps.

    Good morning Angelo. I sprayed my first Createx Pearl today. I think it turned out pretty good. Since you’ve been using Createx a while now what is your “go to” airbrush cleaner? I used the Createx airbrush cleaner this time. I was just wondering if you discovered an alternative yet.

    I don't quite understand the 1/32 scale approach by Atlantis when there are many, many military models scaled at 1/35. Why not attempt to standardize? Thanks for the video, Angelo. Hey Angelo my name is Howard. I am a sub btw. I have a question for you. I know this is not related to this actual build you're on. I just started Amt's 63 Stingray. As you probably know, this kit is not good lol. Low parts count, almost like a Johan kit but worse. Anyway, my plan is to base coat it with Testors Aluminum buff metalizer first. Polish it,seal it. Then decant Testors Clear Blue,and Green mix 50/50. Then add a certain amount of Testors Modelmasters clear blue flip flop pearl paint in a 3/4 oz. Airbrush jar mixed 50/50 with lacquer thinner. Soooo Whadda yah think ? Obviously there will be follow up clear coats with testors bottled clear enamel. Will it work ?

  • @AngelosWorkbench

    @AngelosWorkbench

    2 жыл бұрын

    I’ve built that AMT 63 Corvette and thought it was an ok kit. You should be able to get a good result if you clean the parts well and do some test fitting. The color sounds like a really cool idea. I would definitely use some test spoons or an old body as a test as there might be a reaction between the metalizer and the testors clear blue and green as well as the model masters with lacquer thinner mixed in. Anytime your going with paint over other paint it’s a good idea to do a test for reactions but also you can get a feel for how many coats of each produces the color you’re looking for and you can then duplicate it on the model body. Sounds like a great project. Thanks for sharing. Good luck and have fun!!
