This is beautiful Cody. As an artist myself, one tip I use to achieve proper placement of my subject is to draw the inital sketch upside down on the canvas. This cancels out any preconcieved notions about what the subject "should look like" , and helps me focus on the actual shape I see in the reference photo. Once it looks good upside down, flip it over and do the little adjustments. I'm sure uou've also heard of using a mirror? Check your art in the mirror. This helps eliminate problems later on in your work. Keep painting. You've got some wicked natural talent there.

Wonderful action of the subject and application of color. People who know horses are often very aware of conformation and being an equine artist myself I would like to bring your attention to the left eye which appears to be placed a little too high and could also be moved to the left just a tad. If reproducing a photograph remember the camera can lie so it's up to us to rely on our knowledge to over ride the inaccuracies in photos. It's a great painting! Thank you for sharing.

Great work, Cody; you have mad painting skills and are a natural teacher! Just FYI though, unless you've acquired the rights to the reference photo, you should not be using it on KZread; the horse photo image you used is on a book jacket titled: "Horse - Magnificent, Playful, Loyal" by C. Austen et al... I'm not sure who the photographer is or who owns the rights to the photo.

When it comes to realist painting, it’s always handy to have some good reference material. While doing painting, I used two to three images. And you can apply everything you’ve learned here with acrylics, you just don’t have to wait as long for the paint to dry.

You have a good talent you are developing. It is a pity you did not get the eyes correctly positioned prior to starting. It would have helped with the end result. Funny, when looking at some paintings, I find myself wondering if that particular horse had very differently shaped front feet, or is that is just how you painted them? Sometimes, with a horse that has a conformation fault, it can be hard to translate it to a painting without looking like it was an ill formed composition by the artist. Such a conundrum. Keep up the good work. Thanks for posting.
