Only when he gives a close-up of the painting, one realizes how much detail is there in the painting. At first I thought it was a photo. Amazing work.

The only reason I attempted to oil paint was because of Michael James Smith's chill attitude and relaxed demeanour in his KZread videos. Other KZread painting instructor's tutorials made me apprehensive and edgy. Some would begin a lesson by listing ridged artistic rules (which must be adhered to or you're an abject failure), usually followed by the immense blowing of their own self-inflated pompous horns. I'd immediately become anxiety ridden and filled with the "Run Away!" feeling. MJS was/is a breath of fresh air. Every time I hear him say, "That's not a million miles away." I exhale in great relief. I can get a little obsessive over a painting (understatement), become a bit of a 'stress monster' and I get myself wrapped around the axel fairly quickly. Michael's calm instruction pulls in the reins of the wild horses that drive me when I paint. If you're reading this and on the fence whether or not to subscribe to MJS TV - I highly recommend that you sign up. Micheal excels at teaching and doesn't make you feel like an unworthy troglodyte who must bow down to the master while learning. He doesn't seem to have a snobbish bone in his body. Refreshing! PS. I'm not paid to write this, I don't know Micheal personally and I don't write positive reviews if I don't mean them. That wouldn't help anyone.

@@tommullinerart That's not what I meant. Michael also shows the "trick" with the glass pane in a other video. My problem is the consistency of the color so that you can draw very fine lines at all. Somehow it doesn't work with thinner and / or liquin alone. Maybe I should buy better colors.

One day, when I grow up, I want to be able to call myself an artist. Thank you for sharing it with us. I didn't think that someone with your Talent and Experience still regarded a project as a 'challenge' That is good to hear. I thought its only us beginners who see it as a challenge when you have a pretty picture and a blank canvass in front of you. Regards from Cape Town.

This is absolutely true. When you started to paint I into the water, I really was expecting it to ripple, truly - the whole picture looks just so real! Could you please tell me Michael, did you wait for the painting to dry between painting the pebble layers. If not, how on earth do you stop it all going to mud. I know you use a light touch, but to me, more seems to be required. Patsy

It’s not just a puddle, it’s a work of art as real as you get. My mind walked over the puddles, l felt the stones, almost slipped. My shoes got soaked ( your fault, reimbursement at your discretion) and l threw my socks in the garbage as soon as l got back home. This is me “ looking INTO a painting” not at it, as we all should do. Best wishes from Brisbane.
