The first step to any painting project is preparation. having a good sanding and priming job is the beat way to guarantee you will be happy with the finished ceiling.
In order to apply primer you must remember to apply pressure in order to push the paint into the drywall and then lightly back roll to remove extra paint from the surface.
After you have primed I always suggest you sand with a 220 grit sandpaper to ensure any defects have been removed.
The secret to a great ceiling painting job is to paint the first and second coats in opposite directions. This will enable you to have perfect paint coverage and to finish rolling in the same direction as the sun coming into the room.
Always do a light sanding in between every coat of paint. On a ceiling I suggest using a flat paint with no acrylic additive. This gives you great coverage and reduces the chance of seeing the paint lines after you are done. It also helps you do touch up work without seeing the new work.
When painting a ceiling always remember to use a long painting pole and keep your hands below your heart. This will help fight against fatigue and make the job much easier.
The secret to a perfect ceiling paint finish is to cut and roll while keeping the leading edge of the paint wet so that everything can melt together.

I've been a DIY painter since my teen years and always washed down the walls before painting. So my question is, after using your 360 sander on the ceilings or walls, do you have to wipe it down before rolling the paint?

Dumb question for you Jeff. After you sand with the 220 and before your 2nd coat, do you wipe down the ceiling with a damp cloth?

I lost my father to pancreatic cancer 2 years ago, a few months after my husband and I bought our first house. My dad was an amazing engineer. He showed his love best by helping my siblings and I with car mechanics, plumbing, electrical, tiling, whatever -- and whatever we were doing, or whatever problem we had, we knew we could call him if we needed him. I didn't get to learn everything I could from him before he died, so I just wanted to say thank-you, for sharing your kindness and knowledge in these videos, and for enabling me to feel confident about doing these sorts of things myself. I feel his abundance of love with me when I work on my home, and help my family and friends with theirs.

Quick tip, if you are priming your ceiling and walls with the same paint, use a little 4 inch rollers for your corners, you can get right into the corner, gives you a roller finish instead of brush and its 3 times quicker.

I remember working manual labor when in high school and college. I remember feeling like that when my entire body was seized up and not working yet the next day I had to haul 40 cubic yards of dirt or do some other ridiculous landscaping job. Only option was to force the body to go to work. I dont miss those days at all, however it gives you an inner resilience that can not be matched.

Always great videos, Jeff. Thanks. I'm trying to get the streaks and blotches out of my flat white ceiling and just finished watching a video from another very popular home reno YT-ber who said exactly the opposite in terms of painting direction in relation to incoming light - i.e. always paint CROSSWAYS to main sunlight source. So, I guess you're both right. :) I've sprayed twice and rollered once with plenty of paint, with the light, across the light and UGH... still comes out blotchy. Using a quality paint and an 18mm roller to ensure I keep and work into a wet edge.

Thank you Jeff for all you do. What do you do after sanding the first coat of primer? Do you brush off or do anything to get rid of the dust created? What about a treatment in between final coats? What is the in between and prep before you roll on a layer of paint or primer. I think that should be included in your video if possible.

Hey Jeff. Very good job presenting how-to info to the homeowner. In your drywall video you talk of using 120 grit sandpaper between coats of paint. In this one you use 220 grit. Does it matter which one we use and do you sand tight in the corners or just a light going over where the Rad 360 will contact? Keep up the good work. You are doin a good job and providing a good service.

One is never to old or experienced in their trade to learn. You are a good teacher. No painter wants to jump out of bed and paint ceilings all day. It is painful no matter what size pole one uses. As for the direct sunlight issue in your teachings, you are 100% correct. I see this mistake time and time again on ocean front properties where the light bounces off the water from the sun. One can see roller marks and shadows all over the ceiling if it is rolled out in the wrong direction.

I have binged on your channel since I came across it. It’s better than any TV show! I’m 60 yo that has a log cabin now. After watching your basement videos I’m hoping to finish the basement. It has Superior walls on 3 sides of basement. Has garage on one side of stairs and laundry, full bath and large room on other. I’m sure I will have many questions. But I look forward to the challenge. Just used circular saw for first time and built 8’x 6.5’x 3’ shelves that allow mower, wheel barrel to be stored under 1st shelf. Looking at entry bench next. Empty nest is great! Thanks for all the help!

Hi Jeff. Follow up question. I’m having trouble getting a good finish on a ceiling I’ve done 3 coats on and finely sanded between. I’m getting streaks and patchy areas, painting white on white. I think the problem is, I’m struggling to see where I’ve painted and with applying even amounts of paint on all areas. Have you ever encountered this problem and any tips please? Many thanks .

Hi Jeff! First off, wonderful videos. You have really helped me educate myself on best practices and how to do things around the house. My question is in regards to 2 in 1 primer/paint. It would seems easy to prime and paint at the same time. However, I prefer your method but would like get your view on 2 in 1 primer/paint.

It is a marketing scam since we don't need a primer on water based paints anymore like we did in the old days.

Hi! I've got a few nail pops in a textured ceiling. They look like quarter-sized bumps. How do I repair these? Also, it would nice to see a painting repair video geared for those of out here in the NW USA that have textured walls and ceilings with rounded wall corners. Love all your videos! You've been a great help in the updating of our 90s home. Thanks!

I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. I manage a large basement finishing company in Michigan, and use your tips once in a while. I have learned so much from you, man you’re awesome. One question...Usually after I spot prime I’ll get a 3/4” nap and mini roll it to give it “stipple”. Why do you spray it with the oil based kills? Won’t it flash if you’re not adding roller marks to the spot mud?

It's pretty standard to go with a flat sheen on a ceiling. And since it's flat it means you can touch it up in the future without worry of it flashing or streaking, like what would happen if you tried to touch up eggshell or semi-gloss.

Hey bud! You helped me prior and it was great! I am in the process of doing flat ceilings in my condo. I did my bedrooms with flat ceilings paint by PPG. Turned out great. I am about to do my bathroom, it's small, with light ventilation, want to know if I should use the same paint or something different to give more water and humidity protection. Thank you so much!!
