How to paint a car at home! step by step diy

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hi i'm Nolan and i have a 2010 Honda Civic. In this video i will show you how to sand, use body filler, and paint your car with good results! The video is laid out in a step by step format so you can reference it if you decide to paint a car yourself! Im growing my instagram @diy_civic and i would appreciate it if you guys gave me a follow! Also if you could follow @_liamcairns_ as he was my photographer through all of this! I have never had any experience in body work before and this was my first try! Just realize that it is a lot of work but it is so worth it when the car is finished. I hope everyone is safe and healthy, thanks for watching this video and have a great day! Subscribe!

    Coming from a Painter and someone who has done body work for 20 Years First sand the old paint with 220 Grit not 80 As far as body work never put body filler over rust. Make sure to always grind the rust completely out! Always Prime the complete area that old clear and old paint was removed as you can see on the first coat of paint you can see all those areas bleeding through this would have prevented this. Also after Priming the complete Hood roof etc... Sand with a Block to make it level and slick always sand at an angle do not sand strait with your block or it can leave lines in the primer. Let primer cure for at least a day or two before sanding. So it can absorb into the scratches. Sand the car with 400 Grit before painting. After the car is mask up and ready to paint Use a Sealer on the primer before painting this will also eliminate any scratches or imperfections left wait 30 minutes after spraying the sealer and then Paint the Car do about 3 coats of paint and then wait 15-20 minutes and Clear coat 3 coats! If you do this you will have a nice paint Job!

    @@avilesnba You can primer directly over the 220 but if you want you can take an extra step such as 400 to eliminate even more scratches which will certainly help avoid them ever coming back through and showing.

    Paint is one thing I don't feel comfortable doing myself. I've tried to paint stuff like engine or suspension parts following instructions and it never works. So I just get stuff powder coated now. Do you have any good way to to find a good paint shop near me? Obviously there is Maaco and collision centers, but no one really advertises paint jobs (besides Maaco which I'd avoid).

    @@williammcinerny9198 Using a gun will come out with a superior paint job every time. The hassle is really all of the equipment you need to buy with it. At least 5hp air compressor and filters alone are expensive. If you're going to go through the trouble, buy good paint. This guy should have used base coat/clear coat. Depends what you are going for though, if you're just doing rockers, rattle can because it probably won't last regardless of the paint. Collision repair on a decent car, 2k system is the best. Edit: They actually do make rattle can 2 part clear coat. I think it's eastwood that makes it. I've heard good things about it and it would probably make you work hold up quite a bit better.

    I think even with single stage paint you're supposed to prime the car before hand with filler primer. Before that though, you should have brushed off the rusted areas and used rust remover. It'll bubble your paint extremely quickly otherwise. Awesome project for you to learn from though. Great job!

    Interesting vid. Like you, Nolan, I have a car that looks like hell, a battered '08 Honda Fit. When my oldest backed into a pipe, knocking a hole in the rear bumper, that was it. I patched that ('glass on the inside, bondo on the outside), then turned my attention to an array of dents and dings. Now, those are all done. I'm going to get an estimate from a body shop up the road to repaint the car the same color (metallic blue), but I'm pretty sure the boy and I will paint it ourselves. (My brother and I repainted a couple of cars, but that was years ago. I needed a refresher.) I think you did a fine job for a first-timer.

    Another tip, before you paint and after you wash it. Wet a lint free rag with mineral spirits or acetone to wipe down the whole car. Removes any grease and will prevent imperfections in your paint. Then tack when dry. Also skim coat helps your Bondo imperfections. We apply a layer over Bondo to really get it perfect. Spray down black paint to see any low or high spots. If you get orange peel in some spots you can try to wet sand it out with super fine grit then buff it (but don't go too crazy or you'll have to spray that area again). You get that wavy orange peel because the surface wasn't prepped clean

    Nothing wrong with your paint choice and style of paint. Used well in the industrial and heavy equipment world. If you really wanted to you could coat the car, let it cure fully and then fine grit sand or wet sand to get that micro Scratching and then coat it in a clear coat, like a hard paint with a clear coat for that vase coat protection, may have a slight edge refraction in the light but I think that would add character and you wouldn't even really notice it. Cross hatch is a good method for hand planing a flat surface but since your dealing with edges and contours the cross hatch really doesn't work. If you cut to far your paint will level out, be careful on the edges, looks like you burnt through or maybe not, hard to tell. Primer the bare paint. Other then that man...this looks mint

    I don't remember the mix but for whatever paint you do decide to buy they will have all of that info on the can / bottle. as far as basic colours go i was told that white, black, red and yellow were pretty much the only colours you'd want to use single stage on if you wanted the best results possible. But to answer your question I definitely think you could paint with orange with good results. good luck!!

    No primer nor sealer?? U cant tell me u didnt have sand scratches? For a quickie paint job thats clear was only delamming I would've ditched 80 grit, too harsh. 400 or even 600 would be sufficient. Use at least a sealer for uniformity or maybe a Bulldog type adhesion promoter. Tip.. 85% overlap tighter passes less material needed. Did it dull back yet?

    Just a couple of tips: To prevent scratching trim when sanding; mask everything up before you start Use a space heater to get the room nice and warm. Lay on some primer/sealer first to ensure your base coat stays on. Spray a single very light layer of base coat on, let it flash off and lightly sand. This will help you see any low or high spots that need correcting before you lay a proper base coat. When spraying, don't release the trigger, instead flick your wrist left or right at the end of your pass to help with blending and prevent the gun from spitting. Give it a few good layers of clear then sand and buff to make it look showroom quality!

    took around 60 hours all in - sanding definitely took the longest amount of time but you could cut the time in half with an orbital sander... definitely take your time on the sanding portion of things, make sure to address rust thoroughly because once the paint is down you won't be able to fix it without re spraying again

    The process is good. but I think you missed two things: I think that's the reasons why your car (sorry) not look so shiny after painting. After painting you need to apply furnishing (varnish compund a.k.a clear coat) on the body surface to 'unveil' the genuine paint color. Then you also need to polish those surface wish polishing brush+ polishing compound to make glossy effect. Lastly (not mandatory) you need to apply ceramic coat (fluid compound) to guard the painting against all weather damage (sun overheating), acid rain, accidentally scratch, chemical fluid disturbance etc..

  • @Zacharias3

    @Zacharias3

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, clear coat as final really brings forth color and more shine. In some cases clear coat alone can bring out colors without painting which speaks to why is so crucial for this kind of work.

    For the body filling why didnt you remove the rust before applying? It will still spread and eventually ruin your paint I thought? Also since the rust would have been bare metal, shouldn't primer have been applied first? I've only done very few amateur bodywork and not good at painting knowledge really so I'm curious.

  • @NolanConley

    @NolanConley

    3 жыл бұрын

    ill be honest, I should have addressed the rust more before I applied body filler. although with the paint its a single stage polyurethane paint that's mixed with a paint catalyst and reducer, there's no primer or clear, everything is mixed in and put down in one step. but the paint has held up really nicely over the 9 months since ive uploaded. Theres still no rust and the paint is still shiny so I think if you were to paint your car the single stage is a great option especially for the price

    @@NolanConley Min 3:38 - 3:48 isn't great, putting filler over obvious red rust, this isn't ideal. Do something, like a 'kurust', or rub down, or epoxy, or weld. Not filler ontop of rust....that's lazy, which is at odds considering the effort you put into the rest of the car.
