Great tips! 😊 I pack a travel size bottle of Downey Wrinkle Release...when I get to my destination I spritz my clothes and smooth them out and put on hangers. When I have travelled on mission trips to Haiti, I leave all my clothes and shoes. I purchase from locals a few small baskets and handmade cards to gift to my sponsors. My bag is light, and my heart is full. ❤

Very timely as I'm leaving on a 3 week overseas trip next week and, yes, I'm travelling carry-on only. I tried it last year and found it so much easier than lugging a big suitcase around. As a woman in my sixties, my rule of thumb is that I can manage the bags on my own and lift my bag into the overhead locker in a plane or onto a train - very freeing

I agree with every one of your tips. I also had someone recommend when I traveled abroad to pack old underwear that I could throw out and make space for anything I bought on my trip like a new sweater. I love rolling clothes and limiting shoes! I believe the airline charges for checking bags have encouraged all of us to consider traveling lighter. I've been traveling quarterly to see my sister who was ill and recently passed away. The only time I checked a bag was when I brought food to make her and her husband a special Italian meal to make up for the trip they didn't get to take because of covid lockdown. They live in a rural area of KY and I didn't want to take any chances not getting the ingredients I needed. It was so worth it and a great memory to have now that she's gone. I did it for their 30th and last anniversary so I hope it will be a great memory for my BIL also.

Ever since I walked my first Camino de Santiago (800 km/500 mi) across northern Spain over six weeks) with just a backpack, I have learned to pack lightly. It's not just on long distance hikes -- I also travelled to eight countries over six weeks with just one carry-on not too long ago. That first Camino started my minimalism journey in my home life too.

This is spot on! I traveled from Seattle to New Zealand via Sydney, Australia for 10 days earlier this year and only packed a carry-on + backpack (for the allowed personal item). When a flight delay from Sydney caused a re-route through Auckland rather than going straight to my final destination, it was a relief having all my things with me and not worrying about where a checked bag might be. I did laundry by hand and air dried it in the hotel room, a small time commitment and worth the trade off of hassle with excess baggage. Traveling with just a carry-on + backpack also helps me to be more mobile. Long walks through airports are a breeze and easy to navigate on all sorts of terrain. I was able to stay within the stricter weight limits required in international airlines as well.

I just came back from an Alaskan Cruise with only carry on luggage. I too brought old underwear/socks that I discarded after each use. I travelled to Germany from Canada with a school bag sized backpack. It was amazing! Because our winter weathers are similar, i'm used to layering and wearing wool. I also worked hard to fit my toileteries and makeup in a very small bag. I would recommend folks look into merino wool clothing as it stays fresh and dries very fast when washed.

Great idea and I can usually pack in a carry on size, but what I can't do is lift the suitcase into the overhead bin. Hate relying on strangers to help me. Also, since I travel alone a lot, it means I have to take it with me wherever I go in the airport. But I have learned to pack lighter. Souvenirs aren't a problem, except for yarn. That's sometimes an issue when I travel. I once shipped dirty clothes home from Amsterdam so I could have enough room for all the yarn I bought.😂

Great video. Did 3 weeks in the USA from UK with small suitcase and a small backpack. Bought dark teeshirts with some nylon mix, not thick cotton. Wash them in the sink, wrap them in a towel for a short while hang them up, the in the morning a quick burst of the hotel hairdryer works a treat. Uniqlo lightweight underwear dries overnight. A fine merino wool jumper (M&S sales) keeps you warm and doesnt hold body odour at all, hang it out and it refreshes itself. Sometimes I save an old outfit, wear it to travel and leave it behind, no ones looking at me for fashion tips. I didnt realise how hot Washington was in August and so the thick jeans I took I never wore!!

I NEVER check luggage. Btw my carry on and personal item, it has to work. I have learned that if you are concerned about the environment, limited the weight of the plane by everyone carrying less helps with fuel consumption and pollution. Also, you have to get comfortable with doing laundry or having it done. Lastly, it defintely harder in colder climates. He is right about neutrals being your friend. I try to carry a hoodie or sweater along with my jacket on the plane. You have to be creative sometimes to make it work"-)

Love this! And I agree! I find rolling my clothes actually saves me from ironing as I roll my socks, undies and sometimes a pajama top inside an outfit, which helps prevent wrinkles. Rolling definitely saves room! Packing cubes help too! I’ve even re-used the plastic zippered packaging that sometimes bedsheets come in to use as “packing cubes.” They help reduce the size of a rolled jacket and help keep things organized in your carry on. 😊

If you travel maybe once a year not needed so much but if you travel more they were awesome! When I got home I just stored them in my luggage also so no additional clutter in my house. I like to pack light however some travelers pack a carry on plus bring a huge backpack etc so they take up 2 spots in the overhead bins. I've been on a few flights where the airline doesn't charge if you want to check your bag because the number of carry-ons is excessive. A free checked bag is not a bad perk. Agree with all of your tips. Switching to a dry laundry strip detergent and shampoo bars cuts down on the liquids too.

Sure, but if you do check your bag, make sure you have whatever you might need in your personal item in case there are delays, or you even get stuck overnight somewhere and your personal item is all you've got (more likely to happen if you have any layovers than with only non-stop, but you still never know); and also make sure there's nothing in your checked suitcase that could spontaneously combust, such as Li-ion batteries. Just throwing it out there for everyone's benefit since they're things that not necessarily everyone remembers/realizes.

Oh Joshua, this message couldn't have been more timely! I am traveling to Italy a week from tomorrow and for the last several months I have been researching on how to travel with just a carry on. I will be in Italy on a tour for 16 days and I am determined to make it with just one small suitcase on board . Because I'm newly retired and new to the traveling lifestyle I did invest in some travel clothing which really was not that expensive. I have a couple long pants, skirts, capris, All in either grey or black so that I am free to jazz it up with some snazy tops. All clothes are quick drying and minimal wrinkle materials. I purchased some of the laundry soap sheets to take along and I tore them in smaller pieces so that I could handwash my items as needed in the hotel sink. Some items I may choose to purchase in Italy such as any personal items that have happened to run out of. And to make it even easier I signed up for global pass which will allow me to Make it a quick trip through customs as I return to the US and also for pre-check TSA which will help me out of the US! So excited for my new venture of travel and not to mention my new way of packing. Thanks for the encouragement!

I've done 3 1/2 weeks (with laundry access) in a smaller-than-standard carryon and school size backpack I don't even know how many times. These days, I keep a small amount of clothing (a few shirts, couple shorts, couple leggings, a sweatshirt, pair of sweatpants, pair of slippers, and some socks and underwear), as well as a full set of full size toiletries (allergies, so have to use specific ones, which annoyingly aren't readily available in stores) and a pillow (my neck is super picky), at my parents' house (when I travel, their house is always home base), so that cuts down significantly the amount of stuff I have to travel with (I also keep some empty travel bottles there, in case I need to take only small amounts of things somewhere during the time I'm there, like I did for camp in July) - did 2 trips earlier this year (one was 5 days, the other 2 weeks, both with laundry access) and literally the only bag I took was my school size backpack, nothing else. I do still take whatever toiletries and such I would need if I get stuck overnight on a layover again (has happened before, can always happen again), but it's the absolute bare bones. For the times that I do take my suitcase (and I used one in my backpack on the trips where that was the only bag I took), packing cubes have been my lifesaver for the last 4 years - I'm never going back to traveling without them, they're just too useful. Speaking of waiting at the baggage claim, my single-gate home airport sends gate-checked bags (regional jet, so overheads are about half the size of the ones on bigger planes) to the baggage claim if they're short-staffed or it's cold or precipitating (you have to walk across the tarmac to get from the plane to the terminal), and I had to wait 20 minutes at the baggage claim for my suitcase in February, but in June, I only had my backpack, and I was literally the first person to leave the airport property - I was out of the parking lot before anyone had even gotten their bags from the baggage claim (and that includes all the time it took to deal with my wheelchair, too, so that's really saying something); I would have been the first person gone in April as well, except I had to brush the snow off the car because it was snowing (the only people who left before me that time were being picked up, so no snow removal required for them).

I think my minimalism journey (though I had no name for it then) started when I took a 7 week vacation with my husband. One of our stops was in Africa where bush planes only allow one duffel bag of a specific dimension/weight and a backpack per person. Thus, our entire trip was all in a duffle and backpack. And this included nice stays…not just packpacking in yours 20s-style. Once I returned I felt nauseated looking at my giant closet of crap and thinking of the amazing time I had with only a duffel bag of things. I’ve been spending the last several years with a better understanding of my needs to slowly declutter my life and add sparingly to my things. What a lesson!

I come from a family of overpackers: checked luggage, bulging carry-ons and personal items, hats, sunglasses, jackets, bags of food, etc. Getting on and off the planes during our trip to Hawaii was such a headache. I had my purse and a simple carry-on. By the last leg of it, I just grabbed my stuff and walked off, wishing them luck in my head 😅

Our family of 5 took a 8 day trip to Mexico this past March. I was determined to take carry on luggage only. It took a bit more planning (liquids were the biggest pain, especially sunscreen). But we did it and it was so great! There was no waiting forever for luggage, and no worries about losing anything. I’ll never go back to checking luggage.

Really good tips! When my husband and I travel internationally we only take a backpack each and we check just 1 bag. This save us money as the the carry on is more expensive and we will have to check one for each. This also allow us to bring consumables goods that we love to later eat. This has allow us to travel light and within budget but it’s our personal experience.

Going end of month, 3 leggings, 4 shirts, 1 pair light shoes in bag. Underwear, def one each day. Hahahahah…no souvenirs unless very very small.

I travelled with carry ins last year for the first time for a beach holiday and was actually surprised how much I fit in. As long as you keep shoes and toiletries to a minimum and don’t buy stuff when you get there it’s very easy. Plus saves so much time.

I travel consistently using a ‘personal item’ size only. 8x14x18. It goes under the seat. For a one week stay. People are baffled that it is possible. I wear the heaviest clothing during travel days (I’m always cold on the plane anyways). I take only the essentials with me. It can be done. The simplicity is wonderful! If they would allow those with only a ‘personal item’ disembark the plane first that would be lovely. Alas, we must wait for all the bulky luggage handlers to unload their massive suitcases from the overhead and take eons to disembark😂

Since my kids are out of the baby phase, we all only take hand luggage when traveling. We take old underware and tshirts that can be thrown away to make space for a few things we may buy while on holiday. Since I was a young adult back packing around the world, i always buy/invest in paintings by local artists when on holiday as souvenirs.. they can be packed flat or rolled and are then my art/decor at home. We take hard soap and conditioner bars, solid deo, paper washing powder. Then the liquid allowance can be used for individual things eg face creams, skin care. We take one small toothpaste and buy a normal tube on arrival. We also wear our heaviest, bulkiest clothes and shoes on the flight eg walking boots. We have micro light travel towels and if going somewhere warm, we only take light tiny plastic rain coats as an emergency. You roll your clothes together eg outfits, or all together with socks and pants in the middle, the less creasable clothes around those and the most creasable clothes on the outside around all the rest. Then they don't crease..no iron needed. If there is an odd small crease.. put clothes on 30-60mins before leaving room on holiday and body heat removes those little creases.

I agree with all of your suggestions however now that I’m handicapped I don’t have a choice but to check a small suitcase and “walker.” As a former flight attendant rolling clothes is the only way to pack or using packing cubes. Great advice!

Hey Joshua, this is absolutely true! I did this for the last 3 or 4 years except one trip in wintertime. It is a bit difficult with all the bulky stuff if you travel in wintertime or when you travel to a land with a cold climate. But travelling with only a carry on is so freeing. 😃 greetings from Germany 😊

Unless going somewhere with extreme cold (like the arctic) where really heavy layers are required, wear thin lightweight packable layers (e.g. cashmere, merino, silk, fleece, cotton blend, etc. - whatever works for you). In place of a bulky winter coat: puffy and rain coat. In place of bulky snow pants: pair or two of warm leggings, a heavier insulating layer, and rain/ski pants. In place of bulky winter boots: wool socks, toe warmers (if needed), waterproof hiking boots (wear on the plane/in the car), and knee high waterproof gaiters. I work outside year round on a ranch in the central American Rockies, and my winters are spent in the central American Rockies and Minnesota (my understanding is Minnesota has basically the same kind of weather as Germany, though I've never been to Germany in the winter, so it might get colder in Minnesota, I don't know for sure), but I don't even own real winter boots, snowpants, or a real winter coat, even though in both places it gets down to -20s/-30s in the winter and snows a ton, because layers are where it's at - 6 weeks (with laundry access, of course) for winter in Minnesota all packed in a smaller-than-standard (19") carryon and school sized backpack, 2 years in a row, and this Christmas will make 3 years.

@@SnowySpiritRubyThanks for your good ideas👍Maybe it was a misunderstanding. I live in Germany and when I travel to a colder climate (like the North of Norway) I already do some of your suggestions (wearing the heavy coat and bulkiest shoes while travelling etc.) But I need warm pyjamas and also a snow trouser and that, combined with warm socks and pullovers, takes some space in the carry on. But I'm going to try to manage it😃.

I used to love travelling light with carry on only. Unfortunately so many people do it now that overhead storage is hard to find without paying extra to board early. So I’ve had to reduce my bag to a 15 litre size so it fits under my seat, it works, just!

My wife and I have been travelling carry-on only for 10 years now. Last year, we spent six months travelling RTW, carry-on only. We will never go back to checked luggage. Scrutinise every item in your packlist. Merino wool socks, undies, and T-shirts are my secret weapon.
