How to pack for UTMB | Mandatory and Recommended Gear

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Pass the Gear Check before an ultramarathon. Follow this organized guide to show the mandatory, recommended, hot, and cold kit to ease your nerves on gear packing before your race.
The content is designed for UTMB, CCC, TDS, OCC, and MCC. However, other ultramarathon races would have similar requirements.
This video is designed for the 2022 UTMB. I will update as I see changes. Please also comment for any ideas/revisions so we can all stay knowledgeable.

BACKGROUND
To tackle UTMB's gear requirement, I went through the research to organize my gear to make sure I have everything in place without overpacking. I also created a method to pack the gear for easy access during the race.
I will split the gear into 4 sections - Clothing, Nutrition and Hydration, Materials, and Security.
Each section, I will dive into the Mandatory Gear, Recommended Gear, the Hot Weather Kit, the Cold Weather Kit, and items I used to complete my UTMB CCC experience.
The packing process is also presented to make packing your gear the night before your race as pain free as possible.
I hope this helps your packing and you would have no problem passing the gear check.

    Packing tip. I put my polypro thermals in individual zip lock bags, almost fully close the zip, then kneel on it to get all air out before zipping the final bit

  • @RunThatMile

    Great tip!! Squeeze every bit of air to compact the bag. Just watch out when taking stuff from the backpack, the smaller individual zip lock bags might fall out.🙂

    Hi Brian , only a few days to go so I hope you get this in time. Still feeling my injuries so it will be an interesting experience :-) Regarding the food items that you mentioned. I have packed lots of sachets with liquid calories and as I am expecting around 24 hours it has built up to be really heavy. When I look at you and your surrounding runners in the third wave the packs look a lot lighter. Have only a few gels but some bars and lots of sachets for liquid (powder to be dissolved). What do you think?

  • @RunThatMile

    @RunThatMile

    Жыл бұрын

    @@jonathangrendelmeier575 Hi Jonathan, so glad to hear from you again! Can't believe it's been a year already and it's almost coming up for you, exciting!! There are a few options... 1. Do the math and take whatever you need, there's no competition for the smallest bag. 2. The aid stations provide electrolyte drinks so you could dedicate one water bottle for that and save some weight on the sachets. 3. The salt sticks (tablets in the video) should provide all the electrolyte needs, all you would need should then be water. You could consider carrying less than necessary if you have been double counting your nutrition needs. 4. I actually brought quite a lot of power gels but my stomach couldn't handle it after 4 or 5 (too acidic?), and I didn't take any for the second half. I find the solid food is more important, and there's plenty at the aid stations with plenty of time to absorb... You might not need as much quick calories as you think. (Not a fast road marathon) Not really a solid solution, but hope this helps your thinking... I'm happy to answer follow up questions too to focus down on a solution. In terms of your injury, I guess my only advice is to take things slowly. I have a spreadsheet in my tips for UTMB video to figure out how much time you can take to beat the cutoffs. It's not as fast as you expect and that might sooth your mind a bit so you can take care of the injury and enjoy the race! Chamonix also has stores for supports that may help your injury during the race which you can consider. Good luck and look forward to hear about your race!!!

  • @RunThatMile

    @RunThatMile

    10 ай бұрын

    For CCC or UTMB, I still recommend the 12. Even if you are super efficient in the packing with space left, the pack can be tightened so it won't wobble. Having said that, I filled my pack (12) 80% full and I don't think I had much more that I could take away.

  • @RunThatMile

    @RunThatMile

    10 ай бұрын

    Mandatory gear must be carried at all times and there could be spot checks at any point during the race. There is no drop bag at Champex Lac. For the full UTMB, there is a drop bag service at Courmayeur. However, one assistant may be allowed in to Champex Lac to help you. For more details, you can refer to montblanc.utmb.world/races-runners/other-information/mb-regulations
