How to Pack for the Apocalypse | OOO with Brent Rose

Ғылым және технология

Bug-out bags/survival kits are a controversial topic. Everybody has a different philosophy about what makes a good one. This is Brent's. While bigger and heavier than a lot of the bags you'll see online, you can keep it in the closet by your front door or the trunk of your car, and you'll be prepared for an emergency that could last many days. Brent's kit doubles as a slick backpacking setup, so you'll get to know your gear extremely well, and you get to have fun with it, too.
Tech writer Brent Rose is on a quest. With a surplus of emerging technologies and scientific discoveries popping up how do we separate facts from hype? Brent takes the goods out of the box-and out of the office-to find out how the new wave of cultural phenomena really holds up.

This is gonna sound stupid, but I think you should also put a deck of cards in there. maybe a small journal and pen. They hardly take up any room, and I find them actually pretty important. If you end up being on your own for a while, or even just with 1 other person. It's important to keep yourself sane. A little entertainment or something to do can be very important. Being out in the forest for a long time with nothing to do can easily make someone go crazy.

You’re still out ranged by a gun, also what if you run into a wild animal such as a mountain lion or a Bear. What’s your slingshot gonna do against a bear or a mountain lion. Personally I think you should have both forms of defense lethal, non lethal, close ranged and long ranged.

I was on the fence about that, and it's not a bad way to go. Personally, I really like have a clear bottle with gradation lines, especially if I already have a pot for boiling water, but yes, a metal bottle is also a solid way to go.

grilin18 make sure if you get a metal bottle that it's capable of boiling water / being exposed to a flame. Most aluminum bottles have a plastic liner inside so that's not good... But your typical stainless or titanium bottle is simply polished on the inside and out. Personally i like the idea of a 1 qt boiling pot /cup, as these can often be used as the storage for your stove and fuel (if you're using propane/butane) and any and all cooking/eating utensils in one kit. And these are typically made with handles on the outside so they'll be just as good for making your morning coffee as well as making a stew.

Important note: For those carrying guns in their packs, make sure that you know that gun inside and out. You should be able to take it down to the screws and put it back together again quickly. Also make sure you have the care tools for that particular firearm, such as bore-snakes, ramrods, jags, brushes, cleaner and oil. Filthy guns eventually rot and a rotted gun is just a club with a lot of moving parts. Another thing, 50 rounds sounds like a lot but it's really not. 200 rounds is a fun day at the range. So pick a caliber that has a good balance between stopping power and ammo portability. In an end of world scenario, 9mm would be ideal for those two factors as well as the fact it's an incredibly popular caliber (with firearm enthusiasts and the police) so there will be a lot of it for a long time And for the love of all that's holy TRAIN WITH IT. That gun won't do you any good if the first time you use it is in a defensive situation. Guns aren't like in the movies or video games, and you are not Nathan Drake. Guns are a very personal thing. I am former competitive marksman, but I can't hit squat with a gun I've never used with sights that are set for someone else. Every shooter has specific needs for their firearm in order to perform optimally, so don't just go buy one and shove it in the pack. This is especially important if you plan on carrying it in a holster, milliseconds matter and the more time you spend fiddling with the strap the less time you have to actually aim and fire properly and not waste all of your ammo. Do yourself a favor and leave the "Pray 'n Spray" to the shotguns and sub-machines.

A pack is great but water gets heavy real fast if you are carrying 5 days worth, as well as your camping gear etc. I would recommend adding one of those luggage bags that have wheels or some sort of personal shopper cart dolly unit to hold the heavy stuff. Obviously a luggage cart or shopper cart that has tiny 1 inch wheels will not do, you need a nice big set of wheels like 4-6 inches at least to make hauling comfortable. Make your own cart! Harbor Freight has great and cheap wheels!

Ok....... he starts off by saying he can't see spending a lot of $ on gear he may never use, then starts talking about 400$ backpacks, 130$ sleeping pads and 550$ sleeping bags. Asinine. You can gear up with military surplus just as well for fractions of those prices. And yes, you can still camp with the stuff.... armies all over the world do exactly that. This video is out of touch with the realities of common folks. A well-meaning trendy pushing stuff most people cannot afford to buy. No offense to the man, but this is not a fit for most folks these days. Oh, and please don't strike a ferro rod with the sharp side of your knife, if damages the blade. Use the spine. Also, why spend 500$ on a backpack but 12$ on a knife? What? I finally bailed when he said "between my knife, stun gun, and slingshot, I feel pretty well protected." Oh, God... glad he wasn't caught in the aftermath of Katrina. Ok, gotta go. If you're a trendy with a lot of cash and no real disaster experience, keep watching this. If you're a realist, go hunting for MILSURP gear and use the savings for survival, medical, firearms, and hand-to-hand combat training. Good luck to all.

A lot of people who have bags like this have them becuase of actual experience or needing them. Military , first responders and remote surveyors etc. DItch the tent and get a bivy. Basha/hootchie is better for warmer climates too. Cut up a Z lite for space and use a 45 litre bag if you are actually on foot and not backpacking with trail poles + hitchiking. You can also go ultra hobo and fill a garbage bag with newspaper and grass bepending on whats available to make a matress. Make your own food. Cheaper and you can make longer lasting stuff. Plus when you use it it doesen't cost a crapton to replace. Make a soda can stove.Lighter, cheaper and less moving parts to fail in the long long term. Fire? Lense. Bic lighter. Ferro rod. Actual Flint and steel. Fire piston. Bowdrill. Potassium promagnate ignition reaction etc. Diversify. Crush a sparkplug and add th epercelain to the tip of something rigid. Better glass breaker than anything not a tactical pen. Also works if thrown too. Knives are personal. Mora is good. Get nothing with serrated edges. More to clean and harder to re edge. Use lead pellets for slingshot. It gives amuch better ration of weight to mass in the hit. Practice though. Fishing rod can go. Learn to hand reel and fly. Gill nets are better for the long wait. Hatchet is too small for long work. Get a folding saw. Can be used one handed even when down on energy. (like haven't eaten for 5 days straight energy low.) Print all info. Print all maps. You may not want to avoid cotton in tropical areas. Sometimes staying wet IS the point. Pack a skivvy roll of standard under clothes. Socks/jocks and the shirt. Those need changing more than the outer layers.

@@Soff1859 that is a terrible idea for longer down the road though, there are plenty of countries that allow most firearms you just never see them. also keep in mind your military and some sportsmen even in the UK still have access to firearms. the UK actually has a NRA just a little different than ours with mostly shotguns. P.S. keep in mind a shotgun does 10x more damage than a standard rifle such as the AR15 considering the .223/5.56 is essentially a .22LR.

Also simply not possible for many. If you live in a rural area in a red state of the US, you absolutely do need a gun in your bag tho. Otherwise you might as well not prep at all

@@Soff1859 223/5.56 was changed over after a study was done (after the Korean war) with the idea being to take people out of the fight as a non-walking casualty. IE: it takes 2 people to move that person, so a total of three people are now tied up and not shooting back vs. 1 person is dead and they keep pushing forward. (This is why American SF groups teach to "win the fight first")...7.62x51 (308 win) is still widely used as a NATO cartridge, however, the average soldier load out is up to 300 rounds of 556 vs 180 rounds of 762...so philosophy and round count are the reasons NATO uses 556.

You could actually pretty much forego a survival knife with a good short-axe (some have good points that you could use for various crafting needs), or pretty much forego an axe and knife with the right kind of machete. They are less specialized tools, but weight is a huge deal.
