    Finally! A comprehensive video of the basics of what to bring on a hiking trip! You definitely nailed it right on. Other videos try to constrain themselves to "10 essentials" and end up going overboard with what I personally would call "survival" items (in other words, extras). You basically demonstrated what every hiker minimally need to have on their person with extra food for thought and this definitely is relevant to any hiking location worldwide. All the extra stuff should based on location, time, and personal need. Much appreciated this video and hope others break away from the "10 essential items" to follow this.

    This video is superb, you really nailed it. The only thing that needs mentioning is, what's the best thing to do with that toilet paper after you use it. Leave No Trace practice would be to pack it out, so bring another ziplock. If it's just a day hike, I guess you can avoid bringing a small trowel if you relieve yourself before starting the hike. I see other people have been suggesting some great things to consider bringing in case of an emergency such as a multi-tool and duct tape, and also personal preference items such as a hat. So I guess I'd say, a small emergency mirror or reflective surface in your emergency/medical kit would certainly help a spotter in a plane pinpoint your location. They make small tough emergency mirrors that are the size of your palm.

    I just use the heel of my boot and/or a stick to dig a cat hole. I'm also trying to cut down on my single use plastics (as a former ziploc addict!), so I'm less keen on the carry out method of leave no trace. There's leaves, burn the paper if safe to do so or bury 15cm down and use the cheap/recycled stuff that breaks down quickly. Oh and the video was about what to take... not how to use it ;-)

    RHYANNA: My watch is a daggy old Casio ProTrek - probably about 8 yrs old now. The functions I use most in the outdoors are the altimeter (How much further to the top, along with helping with navigation), alarm for the early starts, clock (obviously!) and the barometer to check for weather changes. The fact that it's tough as old nails and charges thru solar are also good. The only time I use the compass function isn't actually when I'm in the bush, but when I'm out shooting sunrises for my day job and need to check where east is for a long setup in the pitch dark!

    You made a good point about first aid, the better more intensive course for Advanced First aid will teach you about extended care. When in the bush and remote areas emergency services could be hours away, they conditions could get worse and they may have to attempt extrication the next day when conditions clear up. Learning advanced first aid is great but please at least do an applied first aid course. St John Ambulance have loads of courses, you can use the qualifications at work and home not just on the trail. Cheers great video.

    Gud vid. Looking at the terrain, its perhaps wise to have contingency for 'in case' have to spend an unplanned night out there, even though for just a day hike - need the ASKE (attitude, skills, knowledge, equipment) to secure: shelter, fire, water, food. I use a specific checklist (adapted from Dave Canterbury's 10C's of survival) to make sure I pack everything and have a contingency / back up if that item is left behind / broken / lost.

    All good comments GCR. I always think about the possibilities of being benighted… it can happen to anyone! That's why I always take a bit of extra food, keep an emergency blanket in my first aid kit, along with my firelighting kit and water purification. I like the ASKE concept… the right attitude can help get you thru a crappy night and out the other side!

    Would you be able to do a video on your first aid kit, and what you'd consider as 'staples' for single/multi-day hikes? I'd love to know what you use!

    Good idea. I'm a bit cautious as I'm not a qualified instructor, (although I've done many courses over the years)... but I'll add this to the list for my next round of videos and see what I can do. Ta!

    I know the video is old but the camera can be replaced with the smart phone and you should bring an external battery source for the smart phone. If using it as a navigation aid, you'll burn through the battery fairly quickly. Nice video

    Thanks Aaron. Sadly, yes. I live here in the Blue Mts and that valley behind me in the video is now toast... recovering toast, but toast. Still closed since the fires and also some bad flooding.

    Thank you Madam Caro for offering short and handy notes on backpacking and hiking for free. I do hike in Margalla Hills National Park, Islamabad, Pakistan, the 4th largest urban national park in the world. It is in the western most foot hills of Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world, which includes Mount Everest. Many peaks here (such as Trail 3, Margalla Hills Islamabad) are higher than highest peak of England (Scafel Pike). Have you ever come to Margalla Hills Islamabad for hiking? If yes, then which trails have you completed here?

    I just discovered your channel and I've found it really helpful in preparing for a 25k school overnight hike I'm doing. I'm going to wear sneakers as I don't have hiking boots, will that be okay? Is there any tips on making blisters less frequent?

  • @LotsaFreshAir

    @LotsaFreshAir

    Hi +Katie H - that's great you're doing an overnight hike. Is that for something like the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme? The types of shoes you wear will depend on the type of terrain you're going to be walking on, how heavy your pack will be and how strong your ankles are... so it's a bit hard for me to give you a solid answer on that one. I personally wear hiking shoes (not boots), but that's because my ankles have become pretty strong over the years with all the rough and uneven surfaces that I'm used to walking on, such as tree roots, rocks, etc. In terms of blisters, it's a great idea to always wear shoes that aren't new and you've worn them in well, as well as stopping as soon as you feel a 'hot spot' on your ankles or wherever and put tape on it immediately... before a blister even develops. I recommend a stretchy, breathable tape like 'Fixomul' is perfect. Hope that helps and goodluck with your hike!
