It's just about that first drop. After you understand that it's your head playing with you, you'll never fail again.

First time I got it, it just clicked, and I was immediately hooked! It's such a head game. Shoutout to the two random older skaters who spent their time teaching me and my friends how to do it correctly. I started on a huge mini. It was basically a real halfpipe, but without the vert. The first time I tried it with no instruction, I bodied HARD in front of a crowd. So glad those guys saw me and spent time teaching us how it's done. I might've never kept skating transition otherwise. There was no KZread or Braille back then! If you didn't have someone to teach you, it was rough. Took me years and THOUSANDS of attempts just to learn to ollie and kickflip as a kid before I'd ever been to a park.
Can’t have a video about overcoming fear and not have Gabe drop in on Vert.

As much as I love watching Aaron and the team shred, watching Derek drop in gave me all the feels. Congrats Derek, keep inspiring us skateboarders who are learning and overcoming our fears.
I would love to see you take him through the starter tricks 🙂
I really needed this I started skateboarding again 3 weeks ago after 30 years I’m 45 now. My son started lessons. So I said I’ll skate with you. 2 weeks ago I bust my nose trying to drop in. So haven’t tried again. Hopefully after this it will work for a old man

Exact same story for me man with my 11yr old but without the attempt to drop in yet. Twisted my ankle baaad in the first month but still been at it for about 6 months. Learning to bail properly at 45 yrs old and 100kg has been enlightening... And painful 😆
i love how when ur scared to do a new trick after u land the first one the fear seems to disappear

after you fall the fear disappears
I feel Derek so much, my few drop in attempts must've looked just as dangerous. It's just so crazy how quickly this goes from safe to bodied, when you allow for a slither of doubt, making you instinctively pull your weight back.
Yes please for the Derek learning to skate series!! It’s always nice for newbies like me😂
Have to do a how to skate series with Derek!!

That is definitely the plan
Overcoming fear is not easy, but hesitation is the worst thing. I learned the hard way when I hesitated doing a 360 on snowboard on an icy surface... I slammed badly, got a concussion (wasn't wearing a helmet then, bad move). The sooner you get it "over with" (the sooner you do the thing that scares you), the better. What's the worst that can happen? You slam? Put on some gear and do it. You bail? Do it again, right away. The old addage "getting back on the horse" exists for a reason, because if you don't it'll be worse. YOU CAN DO IT! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Aaron said it, it's all in the mind. There is no spoon.
Just goes to show you how hard it is to teach and pass your understanding onto someone else. Mad respect to teachers!
I want to see the series of you taking him through all the tricks! Also I am terrified of Drop-ins, but have never been scared of ollies.
Just wanna say, I watched this earlier today and it's EXACTLY how I felt all my teen years skating. I've still never skated vert and this video made me make a trip to get my board and practice dropping in the afternoon. Dropping the shoulder was the tip I've waited 20years to hear and work!!!
@chrisvagabond
4 ай бұрын
yeah!! that tip was all! I learned dropping in just going down and forward and somehow it works. But this simple detail makes it all very clear!
It's all so scary! Super proud of you, Derek. Keep facing those fears and making gains.
I really appreciate this kind of content from you guys, I just started learning at 29 for the first time and just getting out and learning to push has me needing this kind of motivation

Love it! The first time I ever dropped in, it was on a pretty tall and steep mini, maybe even a full halfpipe but without the vert. I wasn't as scared as I SHOULD have been! I bodied so hard in front of a crowd. Shoutout to the two older skaters at the park who noticed and spent their time, on multiple days, teaching me and my friends to drop in correctly. Not to mention more than a few other tricks and tips. Without them, I might've never attempted it again or gone on to start skating transition.
I haven’t dropped in yet and this video has really built my confidence up

Love to watch a whole series about derek learning and his progression with all these rad dudes teaching him to shred
We just started skating again after a 5 year break, been overthinking the big drop in at the local park. Thanks for this guys!!!
Derek you did so amazing bro! Keep it up, and keep filming it because so many are the same level as you and to chronicle it together helps them grow and learn faster! Job well done. Progress Persist
Congratulations! That was so wonderful to watch, and hella inspiring! Yesterday I stepped on a board for the first time in almost 25 years thanks to VIDEOS LIKE THIS!
Yesss I wanna see a whole Derek progress series!!! 🔥
Name a more wholesome skateboarding video. Amazing. being so bad with uneven surfaces, i gave up on skating long ago, so this really hits to see him overcome the fear from all the different ramps up; really inspiring me to get my board out
Thank you for this video...I am 50 next year and have decided to learn via your videos. More of this stuff please xx us beginners need to see this kinda stuff.

Professional pocket pool player here! Learning to drop in, too, Derek!
I'm in Derek's situation atm and I'm really impressed he did so well. Ironically I successfully dropped in on a steep ramp the very first time I tried it using the shoulder technique but the second time I hurt myself so now I can only do very shallow ramps until I get over my psychological barrier. Well done Derek.
I’ve been trying to overcome the fear of turning into a back disaster over the coping, and this video reminds me of how similar all of these fears are. But of course nothing is as scary as your first drop in. Eventually you realize that you just have to take your chances with the first throw. And then boom, your body knows what’s going on and it just starts to work.
Yes, I would 100% watch every video of you showing dude some tricks and teaching them how to do them. I'm just a old dude returning to skating that can use that some help also.
Yes. Derek series.
yes please do more of this, i need some motivation.
This was one of the best videos in a while! Let me apprentice under Derek! I can clean a mean warehouse and will learn right along with him!
More of this glorious human please. GJ!
Way to go! Last Sunday I also conquered my fear and learned Blunt to Rock on a mini Ramp never thought I was ever going to learn "blunt trick" but it happed :D
Do more of these videos, where Aaron is teaching amateurs. I love those videos when Aaron was teaching Alec. HILARIOUS!
Best video in ages.Derrick is awesome & great to see Chloe too!
I love how you guys teach.
The true fear in skateboarding for me is my wife’s voices in the back of me head, “ don’t be an idiot”❤
As an adult beginner, I needed this video!
I just recently learned this and it was the most satisfying thing to roll off of the ramp, took the Braille advice, just didn’t think about it, step on it and go! Thank you for all your help Braille Ps. I am obsessed with my Midnight maker skateboard!
Derek video is a must, everyone gotta learn someday
Imagine already being nervous but then having your bosses screaming at you hahah. In all seriousness you killed it Derek, would love to see more!
my big trick for overcoming fear in skating (I roller skate, but it works the same) is earbuds with a song that really amps me up. it's way easier to nail tricks when I have that confidence and energy.
Nicely done! It was inspiring to watch him conquer his fear 😺
Proud of you Derek mate, you smashed it.
Yes! Series!
You guys are inspiring! I'm taking my 6yr old neice to buy her first board this saturday. Can't wait to see her beaming ear to ear :D

Thanks so much for your guys skating tutorials! Thanks to this video I finally did my first drop in! Posted it on my channel if you want to see
As someone who wants to relearn skateboard tricks I'd love to watch the process with Derek!
Yo guys I completely remember what it felt like the first time I dropped in. It definitely is something big to concur for some people. But Aaron is right, there’s no bailing in a drop in it’s all commitment and in your head.
Would definitely love that series, I miss all the Skategod Lance videos. I still go back and watch them all the time.
This was the best content online this year hands down fam
Great job Derek!
Thank you so much I just dropped in yesterday and it was so great
this is rad... shout out to Derek!
Very inspiring, overcoming fear of drop in, so bend knees and slam the board, thanks 🙏 I try with a mat , it’s been while since faced that fear 😧

Yeah Aaron. Give us the Derek skate progression videos!
thansks i really needed this!
nice job overcoming fear. Keep practicing 💙
Yess a Derrick series pls
I LOVE this!
I broke my spine when I was 12 and I tried dropping in on a minipipe the first time - I didn't lean forward nearly enough, my board went forward, I went back and landed full in the small of my back on the pipe, I was terrified of trying it in the first place but gave it a go, but I didn't have any of my mates who skated at the time to show me how to do this so I absolutely 100% understand Derek. The rest of you are proper bros for getting him through this though, it's properly intimidating, even just trying to do it on a flat ramp!
Loved this , if it wasn't dark out , I'd be off to drop in right this minute... You guys must be so much fun to learn with !! Wish you were just round the corner !! 💯 ❤ and respect 🙏
Derek going through wvery basic trick would actually be a really really natural way to show off common issues and correct them and would also help comfort level and people learning the tricks feel less foolish for not getting it right away. Sounded like a random idea thrown out there but could really actually be really beneficial and something I've never seen anyone else do. A tutorial where someone's actually learning along side you. Dope.

I can totally sympathize with Derek. I'm at that same point in getting back into skating. i've got a small ledge i can sometimes drop in on. but every time i go back to the park. it's a struggle to get going again.
If you’re new to skating then just watch this start to finish. It will inspire you 100%
I can so relate to this guy! I was scared watching him dropping in 😮
Awesome vid! I also love that you guys are both riding goofy - easier to learn for a beginner like me who has the same stance. ;)
