A video you must watch before traveling to Europe! After watching this video, I decided my wife and teenage daughter should watch it. I also made my young adult niece who had never traveled to Europe watch it in the airport before we boarded our flight to London. Five days later, while she was standing amid the crowds gathered in the plaza of The Eiffel Tower in Paris, my niece got to use her newly acquired education when a couple of thieves tried to steal her purse. When one of them bumped into her, she dropped her arm on her small purse, holding it tightly against her chest. When the thief moved behind me, attempting to make a second attempt on her purse, my niece locked eyes with him, letting him know through her stare that she was wise to his wicked intentions. Seeing this, the other criminal signaled for his partner to move on to easier prey. Thanks again for such an insightful video. It save us from a traveling tragedy.

I was in Venice for a trip one year, I was looking at some t-shirts at a venue outside at some like marketplace area. I put my phone down on the counter to look at the shirt using both hands, it was like 5 seconds. I turned around. my phone was gone. I was freaking out for 10 minutes. turns out my brother took it cause he wanted to "teach me a lesson" about leaving things around lmao

Very good video. I'm a Marine Vietnam vet, and very vigilant. I don't use wallets. They get lost or stolen. There are places underneath your clothes where you can put stuff, and you can split it up. Some in a backpack etc. You can put some money in your sock. A sharp pickpocket can get into the pockets inside your coat. Keep everyone beyond arms length. If there's a crowd going the same way as me, I wait till they pass. I'm scanning them, too. On escalators, I go when someone is 3-4 steps ahead of me. If people come up from behind, I turn sideways. Distance is key. Some things I do: When l leave a hotel. I scan the area. If walking in the city, use shop windows as mirrors. Distance. If someone can't get close, they can't steal. I've turned around and look right at them. I don't care if I'm wrong about a particular person. I go with my instincts. People say don't stand there looking at a map. I do. My first time in Barcelona- I stood outside of a tourist office, my back to the wall, with a map in hand. I 'watched the action'. Who is looking at me. Other times, I have a coffee in hand. I saw pickpockets in action, and alerted people. When four thieves came up to me, I yelled 'Policía'. They ran. You can also yell 'carterista (pickpocket), or 'ladron' (thief). Alert people fast. Yelling it should get rid of them. Find out key words, and emergency numbers before you go on holiday. If I see a commotion, I get away. Distance. When a few determined ones come near, I say some variation of 'I'll kill you if you try'... or 'I'll break your f**kin fingers'. I've done the latter. I would NOT recommend this; I'm just saying what I sometimes do. Jewellery. If you want it on you, put it around your ankle, and wear jeans, etc. I've no jewellery. And, I never use hotel safes. They're easy to get into. Occasionally, it will be a staff member. I use a Jansport pack, and a big pack a big pack. No suitcases. At times, before I go out, I leave a note on an A4 sheet of paper in the large backpack that says in the room. The note says 'If you are reading this...I will know when I return'. I keep a baseball in my Jansport daily backpack. If someone wants to get physical, or stole from someone near me... I become a pitcher. I've tripped thieves who stole from a couple, and began running. Money bags, or pouches etc... I never use. I saw a male gypsy in Lisbon rip it right off a woman in a group. I was stunned. But, I chased him into the arms of an undercover Portuguese policía. Remember, YELL! I did in Lisbon, and a thief dropped a man's backpack. Finally, don't let a bad experience ruin your holiday. You can lose everything you own, but you'll be able to replace much. The only thing you can't replace is your life and soul. Good work.

Thank you for these valuable tips! I have been a flight attendant for 30 years and and I have been lucky. Captains have been robbed and they were put a gun to their head in the middle of a hotel lobby in Argentina and in those yellow beatle taxi's in the 90ties. Scary stories! I have always been paying attention to my surroundings, but with more people from my crew and for instance getting cash out of an ATM in Rio de Janeiro was not a very nice thing to do. You constantly have to be alert! As I am blond these stories have kept me inside of the hotel the last time I was in Buenos Aires. Being a tall and muscular man might be an advantage in some ways. 1 time I was in a park across my hotel in Mexico City where there was a clown performing and I was 1 head taller than the average people and a man started to talk to me and I speak Spanish, but when I did leave, I was being followed and he was alerting someone else on his phone. I was very alert and noticed that they were thieves and asked the angels for protection and I had to wait for the pedestrian crossing where my hotel was and in a miraculous way the thieves were gone. I also go by my intuition and in some countries you have to be inside your hotel when it is dark, like Mexico - City.

@Rosalie-ct8mi Hello Rosalie, and thanks for your reply, and thoughts. You have good instincts, and common sense. As for pilots getting robbed in a hotel lobby...it can happen. I was surprised at that. Some brazen thieves may enter hotel rooms. If someone knocks, don't answer unless you're 100% sure of who it is. You can also ask the person to step back so you can see. If, despite all your precautions you were surprised by a thief, it's better to hand it over. You can also carry a wallet with expired credit cards. You're a woman, so there's places where you can hide money, or jewellery above you waist, that a man can't. I'm not tall, or a muscular he-man. But, I have different life experiences that are helpful. At 18 I was a Marine Corps 'grunt' (rifleman) in the Vietnam War. In 1970 on a bus from our base to town, another Marine put a knife to my rib and liver area, and demanded $. I told him I only had enough for a couple of beers, and bus fare back to base. Also, that if I had more i MIGHT give him some. That way I wasn't saying screw you. He pushed a little harder. I looked him in the eye, and knew he hadn't been in Nam. Not in combat, or the war zone. Then, I said 'I've been in the Nam twice. You can stick me with that, and I'll take it out and cut your heart out and eat it in front of you and your friends'. He pulled the knife away because he thought I might be crazy. But, I take every situation on its own. My way could've put me in the hospital, or worse. But, in another situation, I may give my money up. You've a good observation about thief in Mexico City using mobiles. That's a big difference from 30 years ago. Today, one thief with a mobile can text, or send a photo of a person to his partner. In Lisbon, Portugal some thieves pretend to be talking to someone via mobile when they're getting ready to steal. I grabbed a couple of mobiles from thieves. The phone was off, and probably stolen. Rosalie, you travel to beautiful cities, and can do so with a guide, or bodyguard. But, the principle is no one can rob you if they can't get near you. Good luck

We were in the Sistine Chapel, crowded with tourists looking up at the ceiling frescoes-- it’s why people go there. At one point I stated to look at the tourists. There was one guy with a fancy camera a backpack. He looked very much like a tourist. Thing was, he never looked at the frescoes but was always looking at people and maybe their bags. Pickpocket in disguise? Maybe. Secure your valuables. Don’t be complacent.

Just got back from 2 week in Europe. I did use a travelon anti theft bag and also never ever had my phone out without it being attached to a lanyard. I kept my bag in front of me not on my back. Less is more while walking around during the day. You do not need half the stuff you think you need. I did not wear or carry any jewlery. Nobody in Europe cares if you are wearing makeup. Leave all that crap at home. DO NOT set a backpack down at a cafe without putting your foot through the strap.

I took the lighter off her hand and moved away from my group to get her away. She complained loudly and as she turned, she put her hand behind her (where husband was) to try and feel his pocket. Instead she grabbed a handful of privates which I saw clearly. Her lighter went flying and in micro seconds, so did she. I don’t drink and I’m mighty strong. Step off the train before the doors close. This is how they agree on the mark before they get in. I have stepped off a few times and saw them look at each other then looking out at me.

Keeping a cross body bag in front of you is NOT a deterrent. They will get up close to you nearly stomach to stomach so that you can’t see them reaching into your bag in a group and one will pickpocket you and the others will distract you while that one reaches in and gets into your bag. The best thing to do is always be attentive of your handbag and place your hand on your bag esp where the zippers are located when anyone begins to approach you. It’s always a game of distraction while you’re being pick pocketed so just always keep your guard up when anyone approaches you and place your hands over your bag. Always at least one hand on your bag when you’re in tight crowd spaces and or being approached by anyone

This is a great video for anyone traveling to Europe. I'm from Germany myself and pickpockets are definitely a big issue in touristy spots, and even more so during events that involve alcohol (like Oktoberfest or Christmas markets). But also small scale theft of opportunity might hit you any time, like when you leave your bag unattended in a café (like hanging behind you over your chair and such). Generally it's good to always be aware of where your bag is. It's better to have a cross body strap than just carrying a bag over one shoulder. Basically, the easier something can be torn away from you the more likely someone might give it a shot. Also, as this video rightly sad, the more inside zipper pockets your purse has, the better. Do use them! Never ever keep expensive sun glasses, phone or laptop on a table, even if you think it's just 3 steps for you to pick up your coffee from the starbucks counter. Those guys watch you and they are quick. One moment it's there the next it's gone. Be weary of strangers approaching you in the street. At least for Northern/Middle Europe we generally don't do that. I never randomly approached anyone, you should be weary of people who do. Always be aware of your items and check before leaving a bathroom stall that you did take your purse. If you forget to take it, it may be gone even seconds after coming back to retrieve it. This actually happened to me with a shopping bag I had hung on the hook in a bathroom stall. It contained a perfume, a little hand broom plus shovel. When I came back in 20 secs later after realizing I had forgotten it, the tote was still hanging there, but the perfume (understandably) was gone, but also the handbroom plus shovel (maybe the thief had a really dusty house to take care of I don't know). And yes, of course, try not to be an easy mark. The more you look and come across like a tourist, the more likely it is you're in someone's sight without even knowing it. I once lived in Santiago de Chile for 6 months, which also has a fairly bad pick-pocketing problem, but despite me walking around with my open purse, my note book for spanish class sticking out, no one ever tried to take anything because I dressed and moved about pretty much like everybody else. Meanwhile, an American friend of ours had his laptop stolen not once, not twice, but thrice within 6 months. My husband had his raybans flicked from a table in a café. Funnily afterwards he had bought a fake pair and that one he could put down without worries, cause the pick-pockets recognized it as fake and didn't care for it XD Now, I have been living in South Asia for 10 years and I've never had anything stolen here EVER. On the contrary I had people run after me on the street waving my wallet which I had forgotten on the table in some cheap restaurant. One reason for it is certainly, that people who cannot afford expensive items where I live now have no interest stealing them, because anyone who saw them with it would instantly presume it's stolen, and those who can afford them don't need to steal them. In the West poor and wealthier people on surface level look pretty much the same and it's very easy and fast to get away with, say, a macbook under your arm without many people taking notice of you carrying it and peddling it on in some pawn shop or a private buyer. I think that's why pick-pocketing is so rampant in Europe. It's just a very easy to make a quick buck that way. As someone who has travel a fair bit in her life, my last advice would be to NEVER EVER keep all your vital documents and means of payment in one spot, in one wallet, within one purse. Someone tearing away your purse or backpack should never result in you having to go to the embassy for a new emergency passport and begging relatives at home to send you some cash via western union. Always keep an emergency stash of cash as well as one of your cards well hidden away in your hotel room or preferably the safe if available. If possible also leave your passport in the safe. Getting that one replaced is really a pain.

My cousin lives in Berlin. Her native German husband who's lived in Berlin his whole life had his cell phone stolen. I guess he felt safe because he wasn't a tourist, kept the phone on the table - outdoors, in the center, there is a place there I forgot where, they even have a sign to be aware of pickpockets. The girl came up to him, showed him some petition. While he was reading it, his phone was gone. One should never be an easy mark whether one is a tourist or a local. They might "prefer" tourists, but they can go after anybody if they see what they can easily steal. I usually keep stuff in my purse, but I hold it tight and always know where it is. Obviously, once I checked into a hotel, I leave my passport, an extra credit card and most of the cash in the safe, but there is always this time before you can check in, especially if you arrive early as you usually do if you fly from the US.

When I was living in Barcelona many years ago, I witnessed a lot of robberies. A friend of mine got her phone swiped right out of her hand by a guy on a bike; the most common prey were people sitting enjoying a meal or beverage in a plaza. I started looping the strap of my bag through either the leg of the chair I was sitting in, or my own leg, and I could keep it on the ground, or I’d have the bag in my lap or behind my back. The other thing I’d recommend is a small backpack - always wear both straps - there are lots of cute ones out there. I often “lock” the zippers together with a safety pin. :) Also don’t ever EVER get roped into those “magic” tricks with cards or cups/balls with lots of people gathered tightly around. Don’t watch them, and NEVER PLAY them. They *will* take your money in broad daylight.

Only once did someone attempt to suss out where I was keeping my money. She got a good dose of sarcasm for her efforts. I have twice screamed at people as well. Once in Vegas when a woman kept patting my special teddy bear backpack, which never has money or valuables in it. The other time was Barcelona when someone was trying the petition scam. Weirdly I hadn't head of that one yet but I just knew instinctively. I've been yelling at dirtbags since age eleven. I'm almost sixty now. Don't get near me. End of.

@@Rosalie-ct8mi Yep. I actually have one that has a stretchy waistband which has come in amazingly handy. Because nowadays thieves try to cut the waistband of the waist pack (if they can get to it surreptitiously) I discovered another great idea. I wrap the waistband of the waist pack around belt loops on my pants. That way if they do try to cut the waist band they can't slip it from around my waist. And because it stretches I don't have to undo it when I use the restroom. Because I did most of my traveling overseas I actually bought a cheapy phone while I was there. I try to use it as little as possible. Small, so it fit in my waist pack. Also I have what is called a leg safe. This is like a waist pack but it fits around your leg underneath your pants and no one knows it's there. I keep my extra money, cards and passport in that. I started doing that after a trip where I stayed at an iffy bed and breakfast. Now nothing important gets left in my room.

I usually put my purse on my lap when I eat and get my left hand through the strap. The only time I had something stolen - and that was a small coin wallet with a few coins in it, maybe worth some 10 dollars - was over 20 years ago in Seville, and I was careless, let the purse hang from my back while looking at the map with two other tourists. My main wallet was in a zipped pocket, but the coin wallet was in the main part of the purse. After that, I've never had anything happen, but I always keep my purse tight, keep my hand on it at all times and hold tight, no matter what happens I think about my purse first. Of course, the moment I check into a hotel, I live the passport, an extra credit card and most money in the safe. The pickpockets are good, they are professionals, but they prefer going after an easy mark, and there are always those around.

The first time I thought nothing of it and thought I might have made a mistake and gave him only $10 (so he got an extra $40Euros off me). Then two days later, it happened again, with me giving another $ 50 Euros that another male driver tried to switch to a $ 10 Euro. These guys are good and quick and I could not even see where they put the $50E. All the other times, I took an Uber, and it was all autopay, so no money was needed. All other pockets were always empty so I just had to focus on my right arm. EVERYTIME i went into a crowded area (both cities were super crowded) somebody would try to either grab my phone (they ended up touching my hand) or they tried to open the zipper until the point of where my arm was. Its was crazy, like over 15 times this happened. It pains me to say this but every time this happened (and I could see who did it) they were either Gypsy, moorish or black.

I was just pointing out what was evident to me, as a native portuguese speaker (I also speak a little bit of spanish but can understand almost everything) and from a country with millions of portuguese and spanish people (that immigrated over centuries ago) that this particular issue (pickpocketing) appeared to be coming from people that did not appear to be ethnic portuguese/spanish based on the catalogue of faces that I've seen over my lifetime in my home country and other countries were such communities exist and that I have visited. Throughout my week in both these beautiful and amazing countries I was able to partake in conversations with natives in a wide range of situations: be it people that worked in the hotels where I stayed or visited, Uber drivers, people I met at bars/nightclubs and sometimes when this issue would become the subject of the conversation, not necessarily started by me (and believe me, it's a known issue, there are signs literally everywhere and I've met a few people who lost their personal effects, passports included, a true nightmare) I got many reactions and different opinions from the natives, some were bordering on pure racism (maybe they toned it down because I'm part black) and others were more practical or objective but what I could tell is that locals do know and were not afraid to mention, at least in informal conversation, that this particular crime is majoritarily commited by the aforementioned ethnic groups, basically confirming what I had observed and guessed. I don't know much about European/Iberian politics but I do know that this is an issue so if I am to share my experience and try to help people not get mugged than I should say what I observed.

My husband and I have been travelling for some 40 years and we are very attentive to our surroundings. We both keep our IDs, money, cards in small anti-theft chest packs usually underneath a coat, jacket, sweater, etc. We spent the entire month of December 2022 travelling through Bavaria, then a river cruise on the Danube and finally spending Christmas and New Years in Paris. While in Paris, as we were exiting the Concorde metro and a young woman came up to us to say she was lost and asked us for help. While we are looking down at her phone map, I felt my coat tugging and turned around quickly to see another young woman trying to get at my coat. I am from Montreal, so I speak French fluently. I grabbed her wrist, looked at her straight in the eyes and whispered to her in French, " ôtes ta main de mon manteau, sinon je t'arrache le bras et je te fais arrêter.", which translates to, " if you don't take you hand away from my coat, I will rip your arm off and have you arrested." She turned beat red and took off very quickly with the young woman who claimed she was lost and asking for help. Take care and safe travels to you.

It’s apparent that so many of you have never travelled and give some bad advice. Keep NOTHING in your damned pockets, at all, except a few bucks that isn’t going to break you if it disappears. That’s what a money belt is for. Move a few euros to your front pocket every morning and everything else stays in the money belt worn midway up your torso. Don’t carry a stupid purse. Don’t carry a stupid wallet. Use a metal braided camera lanyard to hang your phone around your neck, and under a shirt or jacket except when in use. No wonder pickpocketing is such a lucrative profession, everyone is giving it all away. Sheesh.

Great video! Thanks. One thing, I noticed in Paris, and it was confirmed by my friends who live there, is that a lot of women do not carry purses at all - they carry totes. The great thing about totes is that usually your possessions are at the bottom of this large bag and there are lots of things on top. so I got a tote and used it the entire two months I was in Paris. And I was never pickpocketed.

I had completely forgotten about the petition scams, but a woman targeted my partner while we were near the Louvre by asking if he spoke English and if he’d sign the petition. While she stopped my partner, a man walking behind her continued a few more steps and then circled around to where my partner was. Fortunately, nothing of ours was taken as my partner sped off, but it’s insane how quickly it all happens.

In Seville I ran into one of the ladies that try to offer you Rosemary for free. Afterwards I learned that the scammers will harass you for money for the free rosemary. Those two pockets are big enough for my phone and all of our passports (there are 7 that I’d need to carry) without it showing that I had all of that with me. The other more open pockets are still good for a spare hair tie or two, some lip balm, or a pack of bandaids.

I ALMOST got caught in Spain. I've walked Pigalle alone at night so I consider myself a "very aware tourist" and almost immune to being robbed in this manner. However a woman almost got me in Barcelona by pretending to be taking "donations" for the upkeep of a footbridge near a monument. I literally had my wallet out in front of her and the alarm bells didn't go off until I sensed she was holding the "register as a donor" board a bit too firmly. I pulled away and two 100 Euro notes fluttered to the ground; she almost had them out of my wallet! She just walked away; no apology nothing. I cursed her but she probably didn't even understand me. 🙂 That b**** was good, I'll give her that!

I made eye contact with the guy and gave him a dirty look and they moved on. In Paris, my husband was targeted by a woman who seemed to slip on the metro stairs. When he went to check on her, she tried to get his wallet. Fortunately he felt it and stopped her. There was another accomplice but I can't remember that part. I carry a bag with no cut straps and locking pockets. It also can be worn around your body. I just felt more comfortable not having to worry about the pickpocketing with it. At cafes I like to put the strap of my bad around one leg. It doesn't interfere with my comfort and it provides a lot of resistance because legs are stronger than arms. In Rome my husband had his wallet lifted. It was a woman with children on the bus. He was quick and grabbed her arm before she could get off and she dropped it, I guess so he would let go. She did not look like a pickpocket. We were coming from the airport. Pretty obvious tourists.

Great contribution from somebody who experienced how difficult even for the ones who should know better can be to avoid getting robbed. As a general rule - never have anybody standing close to you in particular when waiting for a green light when crossing a road. Take a turn and come back when it's green. Be careful when people hold the door for you - and never ever shake hands with somebody. Rather be rude and don't answer - than get distracted. All your wallets and purses must be closed by a zipper - don't have valuables in your back pockets. Belly pouches are the safest way to control your belongings. And the most dangerous moments to get your suitcase stolen are in and out of trains at the airport and major rail stations. On extended rail trips, link suitcases with a chain or any other way that it takes time to unlock them. This makes it difficult for thieves to run off with one suite case

If I have a lot of luggage on a train this is what I do: Take a bike lock with you and lock your luggage to the racks (ideally in a way that isn't visible) so it doesn't attract attention. If you're travelling solo and need to use the bathroom on the train go once everyone is settled in but long before the next station so you could technically alert staff and possibly the police. One of my other favourite things is little springy key chains. I make a loop from embroidery floss or sth similar in like all of my pant pockets and my little handbags and where ever you put your phone or wallet you'll clip them onto the loop. The springy key chains are very elastic and you can easily use your important things but have an extra measure of safety.

I had a handbag in such a bad condition, that fell apart when I came back home. No one, literally no one approached. Even the beggars skipped us with the disgusted face. 🤣. During our travels if anyone approached, we angrily responded in our native language. It's not our cup of tea to be rude, however we were forced in order to feel safe. 👍 And yes, no jewelry on us, even custom jewelry, older shoes. Yes, you are not that fancy looking in pictures, but you can enjoy your travel better. 👍
