Ian, that was super easy to follow! Thanks a ton. Just goofing off with Procreate, and this was amazing!! THANK YOU! Super silly (rookie) question. I followed right along and it worked brilliantly, with the exception of one small part at the end. When you created the last layer, to add a some white accents (with overlay selected), I can't seem to get mine white. Regardless of what color I choose, it just makes a lighter color of the red (of the letter) I am attempting to put the highlights in. I know this is pretty difficult to troubleshoot just based off that, but if it's something wicked obvious, I would love to know what I missed. :) Thanks so much. This tutorial was great!

Thanks for this. I was looking for a way to do outlining. I’ve done tones of lettering with shadows but I couldn’t outline. One Q: why do you need to set your top layer for the highlights on “overlay?” Won’t working on a top layer set on “normal” do the same thing?

Super helpful! Do you think maybe in the future you can provide the approximate sizes of the brushes and level of a opacity you use when you select different brushes? I noticed in a lot of procreate tutorials, artist don’t usually show that and then I struggle to find the right size to match what I’m trying to do match the artist’s example. Thank you!

Before all that the artist would need to provide the canvas size. The brush size differs depending on how big canvas is. Opacity for my tutorials are always 100% unless otherwise stated.

@@mrs2u441 don't be scared. Take a photo of your garage and make a mock-up of what it will look like.

When i do this my whole test becomes weirdly shaped and however i turn up or down the threshold it doesnt change

Trying to play around with my ipad and lettering, thank you for this tutorial. I tried it, and for whatever reason, after the blur step, when I tried to select inside the letter and draw out to fill the outline, it kinda just doesn’t work and highlights unevenly. Any pointers? Thank you!

How come my iPad in procreate doesn’t have alpha lock and color fill and when I hit Gaussian blue it doesn’t give me the layer option??? Please help?

This didn't work for me, what version f procreate was used?

As soon as I move the threshold at all the whole background turns blue. Then if I try to move it to the left only parts right next to the letters become un-blue. Hmmm

What if you want the outline to be different colors or an image? I can’t figure out how to do this and outline text/font

Same method but clip mask your image into that shadow he made, color can be changed easily with Hue saturation.

When I do that it fills everything BUT the outline with color. What am I doing wrong?

I need help! I followed your outline steps to a tea and it worked many many times, but now I am trying to do the exact same thing and it will not outline. Could I have messed with the settings some how and changed something in the fill color tab? Everything goes good until I get to the very end and have to fill color.

Yeah, I was trying the same thing. Mine gets weird after the gaussian blur portion. I've tried both layers and it still won't turn my lettering and line white...any ideas?

@@lifeatdifferentspeeds8243 This was happening to me. Afrer gaussian blur....when you are outlining.....make sure you click and hold ON THE ACTUAL LETTERING you are trying to create the outline for. I was dragging on the background. Finally, after weeks of frustration I've figured out my issue. Yours might be similar??

The text layer has to be rasterized

Do you have a screen protector on your iPad?

I found this process completely exasperating, and it didn't work at all for me. Not even a little bit. Thank you for making the video.

Every time I do the selection tool it creates a border inside my lettering and when adjust the threshold it selects everything except my Gaussian blur. Any ideas why. Tried many times still the same.

@@dakotaolivier3609 the very first time I followed the tutorial it was working, then procreate crashed as I was doing the threshold part. Opened procreate tried continuing the piece I was working on then it started acting weird, hasn’t been the same ever since. I updated everything, procreate and my iPad iOS still nothing. The only thing next is to uninstall procreate but then I’ll lose all of my work so that’s not an option for me but if you don’t mind it you can try that.

If you tap and drag, rather than just tap. This worked for me

Just rasterize the type layer and you're be able to follow the same steps.

Didn’t work for me. The outline was bubbly & ugly.
