Eataly CEO Nicola Farinetti knows a thing or two about espresso, so he gave NowThis some advice on how to drink it properly.
Firstly, he explained that espresso is meant to be consumed right at the bar. Espresso is most Italians’ drink of choice and their morning ritual usually begins will a quick stop at their favorite espresso bar.
Once you get your cup of espresso, you should look at it and see if the top resembles tiger stripes. Then you should smell it to check if it’s burned - after that, you can finally take a sip. And make sure you don’t drink your espresso when it's boiling hot - it should be served at a manageable temperature so you can drink it right away.
As for cappuccinos - make sure to only consume those in the morning, since the milk in them can be heavy. And don’t ask for sizes when ordering your Italian beverages. Most beverages in Italy only come in one size, so it would be arbitrary to customize your order.
If you want a truly special espresso experience in Italy, Farinetti suggests going off the beaten path a find the smallest bar in the area. You’ll likely wind up having a truly authentic coffee-consuming experience.

I’m half Italian and during my first trip to Italy, I went to a cafe with my grandmother and asked for an ‘expresso’ then asked where she wanted to sit (she was 85 at the time). She smacked me upside the head and said ‘Ay! No ‘expresso!’ No sitting!’

The only reason why there's no such thing as no sizes is because of the certain ratio of milk it takes to make a latte or cappuccino or macchiato... depending on the ratio that's what the drink is called.

Interesting. I travel to Miami often and the same thing happens at all the Cuban joints where they sell coffee, often through a window at the restaurant or other establishment where patrons congregate outside standing only for a quick shot of coffee, or at the indoor coffee bar itself. You always ask for “un café” and what you’ll get is a shot of espresso. Anything else and you’ll have to specify. For example, if one shot of that thick black delicious stuff isn’t enough for you, then you either buy another one or you ask for “una colada” which is more like 4 to 5 shots of espresso served in a styrofoam cup with a few mini plastic cups for you to distribute mini shots. Oh, and one other thing, if you don’t want it sweet then make sure you ask for it “sin azúcar” (without sugar) otherwise the standard stuff you get is always sweet. I always end up hyper-caffeinated when I’m in Miami, but I can’t help it because they’ve got some of the best espresso coffee anywhere in the USA and you can get it practically everywhere.

My friend's mother who owned Cafe Duomo in Melbourne taught me about Italian coffee. Where their beans come from, who roasted the bean, what blend they use, size of cup for certain coffee, what kind of cup they use, etc. It's embedded in my memory maybe that's why I cannot adjust to large chain coffee shop. There is always something funny.

Here in Torino it's hit or miss. Some bars give it to you by default, some don't. If you ask for it they always give it to you though. I usually don't ask for it, but if they hand it to me I drink it afterwards. I like the coffee taste but I don't necessarily want it hanging around forever.

MVDrudge there are no espresso machines here. What you call espresso machines are the ones used in bars (like in the video) and are only used because they are quick. At home we use “mokas” (strange machine to put on the stove) that takes a bit longer, maybe 5 minutes, but contains coffe for 3-6 people. These have A LONG history, although it’s said that the patent was put in 1933 they date way back, my grandmother had one from 1854 and my great grandmother said it was “too new” when she bought it (1950ish)
