This video marks the start of a video series dedicated to the topic of piece optimization. In the series we are going to take a look at how to improve our pieces ranging from pawns, to bishops, to knights, to rooks, to the queen and even to the king. There are usually some guiding principles or rules that strong players use in order to know how to make the most of their pieces and at the same time make the least or try to hurt the opponent’s pieces.
In this video, IM Alex Astaneh will teach you how to optimize your king and how to handle the king in the different phases of a chess game. King safety and King activity are the general concepts we will discuss in this video.
Summary:
How to handle the king can be divided in two categories:
- In the opening and the middlegame phase: Keep the king safe ( King safety).
- In the endgame phase: As pieces are removed from the board, the King activity becomes very important to the point where often times it is crucial ( Active King).

Hey, here’s a suggestion; can you put your previous episodes of a series in the description? For some reason KZread doesn’t recommend them so I can’t find the other videos.
