My viewer/editor didn’t come with a take up reel for the handle on the right side. Can I buy that online anywhere or does it need to be a particular kind?

Any kind that should work as long as the center hole is the same size. Regular 8mm take up reels are about the diameter size of a pencil and super 8 is about the size of a marker. If you have a super 8, take up reel, just make sure you have an adaptor for regular 8.

So I understand the use for them today, but what was there intended use back then. I mean I get it to edit films. My Grandfather had many films. I remember him splicing but I never seen or ever seen him use anything like this.

Just like you said, these were for splicing film. There were many different kinds of splicers with viewers for people to choose from. Thank you watching, commenting and and subscribing! Is a Sears 9838 Film editor the same as a projector? I'm looking to buy one but not sure what to buy.

No, this film editor is only to view manually. It is not a projector.
