Hello, It might be one with the in-built battery. In that case, you need to replace the whole unit.

Probably hard wired to house like mine continuously chirping without battery means must buy new ones only last 5 yrs .

Does removing the pin deactivates the unit ?

Pin is just to hold the unit from turning. There is a connection adapter when unit it twisted and removed. To deactivate the unit, that adapter has to be removed and batteries as well.

Hi, Sometimes its really tight or stuck, so please try little force. Twisting clock and anti clock might help. Its possible to have 2 pins as well.
