How To Ollie: Tips That Helped Me Learn/Relearn The Ollie

In this quick video, I share some tips on how to do the most foundational trick in skateboarding "the ollie", which will pave the way for almost every other trick in skateboarding. Even though it is a basic trick, it can still be challenging for new skaters and those returning to skateboarding.
In addition to the tips that worked for me, I highly suggest setting aside time to practice-and then practicing some more. If possible, also work on strengthening your leg muscles at home. I hope these tips can help someone new or those getting back into skateboarding. Let me know how your progress is going and if any of these ollie tips helped you out.
Remember to be patient with yourself, and most importantly, have fun and enjoy your skateboarding journey.

    Facts. You emphasize some key points most tutorials leave out - the balance, weight distribution and posture, in addition to the foot position. They are so key. Thank you for highliting them here.

    Thanks! I think I've watched too many tutorials at this point 😂. There are some good ones and some terrible ones, but a lot lack/show this super basic and important information.

    Great vid, well put together and explained. Showing the jumping motion without the board is a key thing a lot of tutorials miss out

    Thanks!! The jump motion is key, I'm trying to make another random clip that actually shows it in action but I'm removing the board via photoshop. Hopefully it comes out good.

    Very welcome!! After a month of being back at it, I think the hardest falls have been the ones where I don't really bend my knees or use my arms for balance. Those falls-I'm down like a ton of bricks; the other times, not too bad though. Over time, I think the worry lessens and it's just a minor thought. Stay at it, though-absolutely the most fun and chill thing to do is skate...well, and surf, but it seems the waves are never cooperating for me 😂

    Hope the tips help. I found that rather than striving for a high ollie, if I just focused on the mechanics and technique, eventually I could go higher. The squatting was also huge; I used to hinge over like crazy and needed to get rid of that bad habit. Keep at it with any trick you're practicing, and you'll definitely make progress.

    takes a little getting used, and also noticing when you're doing it. But every now and then when I still do it I can totally tell the difference. I do air squats at home in the morning or at night, nothing wild just like 10-15 mid way down. Helps to build the muscle memory for it.

    @@OldBrokenSkater do like regular squats or stand on my board and squat it feels like unusual for my body to

  • @OldBrokenSkater

    @OldBrokenSkater

    Start with regular off the board and aim to just get parallel or as close as possible for now (like sitting but in the air, back straight). None of that gym butt to the ground stuff, just a plain old squat until you feel your muscles engage. If you can do 10 great if you can do 5 or less then do five or less every other day for this week then add one the next week. Then start incorporating the squat that you feel comfy with in to your skate tricks. Keep doing squats for as long as you skate, they are good for you and the lower body.

    Funny, I started making these videos a month or so ago and it's been flat ever since 😂 So lucky to be able to skate again. Hoping the flat spell doesn't last long. Sounds like you're getting back into it decently; the first couple of weeks for me, an ollie was nonexistent. But just practicing whenever I could find the time, the muscle memory started to kick in again... for most things. Keep at it, make it fun, good luck, and hope you're getting in the water.

    Hi, believe it is stereo. Might sound weird I think because of the mic and its noise cancelling feature. Sorry if it does, trying to figure audio stuff out still. *** Sorry it looks I did mess up with audio and its in only on the right. Will work on getting it right
