I used a paper hole punch when I was a kid and it worked fine. Just line it up with another disk and go half way in. :-)

I do this all the time for C64 disks. I use a regular hole punch and I stack another floppy on top so I can use the notch of the 2nd disk as a template to show me where to punch the hole in the first.

I just went through this same process, also on an Apple //c as luck would have it. One thing I would recommend is setting aside the first floppy to write a bootable ADTPro disk image, so from then on you can boot it from floppy and don't have to go through the bootstrapping procedure every single time you reboot. The disk image will already be there when you unpack the ADTPro archive.

I used to do this same thing with single-sided discs and found a hand held paper punch that worked well. The notch was a half-circle, but it still worked. There used to be a company that made a square punch for this exact purpose, but it was SO expensive, you would be better off just buying the double-sided discs in the first place. I have to get my IIC out of the closet and try this. Haven't powered it up in YEARS!

If you can find that elusive IIc Imagewriter cable, grab it! I lucked out and my IIc came with a printer and cable, it loads ADTPro much quicker then a standard serial cable. Something tells me its wired for hardware handshaking. My biggest problem with ADTPro is that all my 5.25" floppies have gone bad! I did manage to use it to retrieve some 3rd grade book reports in Bank Street Writer Plus though.

Notching out the other side was quite commonplace in the old days. Most people would use a single hole punch, but that made an unsightly round-ish hole. I actually have a tool made specifically for this purpose that was sold years ago. If anyone remembers the "Programmer's Purity Test" on the rec.humor.funny newsgroup, you may recall question 0353, which was "Have you ever made a "flippy" disk?"

The IIGS used 3 1/2 inch floppies. Is it possible to hook up a IIGS drive to a regular II or is the connection different? I know the trick to make a 1.44meg disk into a 720k disk, and 3 1/2 inch floppies are more readily available.

The connector is the same with the IIe, but the original II used a card edge connector, unless the interface was upgraded. Inter-compatibility of Apple II drives is a bit more complicated than one might imagine. This website should explain it. In short, the II will need a "Liron" controller card. www.vintagemacworld.com/drives.html

I think I finally figured out what state your from! It's Massachusetts. In some of your other videos you make subtle hints about this but never confirm it. In fact when ever you talk about your computers you acquire from your school district you make it your business to tell us not to ask or even talk about it. It's not a big deal, but for me it affects how I relate to you as a computer guy. Your accent isn't southern or northern, but something else. I'm glad I finally know what part of the country your from so I can at least relate to some of things you talk about, like when you say "in this part of the country you don't see these kinds of Honda's." Which part? In some parts of the country a car from the 1960's can easily be found driving around because the whether is dry and it never rains! People forget how curious some of are and I am glad you atleast allow us to post comments. Thanks, Derek

Great video. If you have an older Apple II with cassette port, you don't even need ADTpro, Just connect the line out on your computer with cassette port on the Apple II. You can load a lot of software from asciiexpress.net/diskserver/ (whole disks) or asciiexpress.net/gameserver/ for single games. The transfer speed is surprisingly not much slower than the ADTpro serial connection. Unfortunately it won't work with the Apple IIc.
