How To Nu Metal - Getting that Nu Metal Guitar Tone

In this video I take a look at the Nu Metal style, and how to get that gritty, low tuned metal sound.
This was one of my favourites styles when I was growing up. Also what struck me was the super low tuned guitars when I first heard it. Before this I was used to E Standard and Drop D. But when I heard these bands and that low guitar tuning, I was hooked!
So check out this video on how to get that ton with low tunings
Guitars Used
Squier Jazzmaster Baritone (as a Bass) tuned to Drop B0
Ibanez MMM1 Baritone - Drop B
Ibanez RGIB6 Baritone - Drop B
DAW: Apple Logic Pro
Amp Sim Software:
THU Overloud
STL Tonehub
Brainworx Diezel VH4

I'm such a 90s guy that no matter how hard I try to write modern metal sruff, my music ALWAYS ends up sounding like nu metal (Korn, Sepultura, Soulfly, ill niño, etc). I've been really trying to not sound like that because nu metal isn't really selling anymore, but after watching this video I think I might as well embrace it. That's what naturally comes out.

Good stuff! The phaser really adds a lot to it. Another very nu-metal option where the whammy accents are might have been to play harmonics to get a 1 or 2 octave jump, in a Machine Head or Disturbed kind of fashion.

My favourite Nu-Metal style riffs are from Disturbed (on The Sickness) and Soulfly, even though I don’t really listen to much of those 2 bands i just love that groovy tone. Disturbed are very bounce heavy on their riffs on their first two records, I’m not really a Disturbed fan apart from their first record The Sickness being one of my favourite albums. But the bounce riffing just makes you want to move, even though I’m not a huge fan of Draiman’s vocals past The Sickness. As for Soulfly I’m not really a fan but I just love that groovy and tribal esq riffing that just makes you want to groove the fuck out and go wild, even though I’m not a fan of Max’s vocals. Take Disturbed’s bounce riffing, or Soulfly’s groovy tribal riffing on a better rhythmic vocalist and I would be in heaven.
Hi Heavy. I am a South African too, but living in the UK. My friends in the UK always pick on me for the way I say "here". I never really noticed it with myself, but when I listen to you speak, it is really noticeable. Hahaha. Anyway, this is a really cool video and great sound that you get. Yeah. The RGIB6 I just got last week. Very cool guitar. Love the neck profile on it. Still getting used to the EMG Actives. Might change them.
Great video. One question, what would be the thickest string you can put on the Jazzmaster for a drop B0 tuning without modification? Will a .95 bass string fit the bridge ? Thanks!
@GaryHiebner
3 жыл бұрын
Above 85 and you gonna have to file the nut. So yeah going to B0 you gonna have to mod it, sorry. For a 95 bass string you just need to unwind it a bit by the ball end to get it through the bridge. But that’s pretty easy to do. Takes like 3-5minutes to unwind.
My favourite Nu metal style is KoRn, Talkah and Linkin park’s Hybrid theory
Theres something very weird and present going on the in the low mids around 150-400hz, some kind of muddiness in the mixing - maybe try out soothe or gullfoss - those plugins would really showcase what I mean, might be your room situation or monitoring setup aswell!
@GaryHiebner
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Caynug. Will check it out. Soothe is definitely on my wishlist. I might have been pushing the low mids a bit hard. The early Nu Metal records were pretty low mid heavy and had that muddiness. Haha, maybe I pushed it a bit far

Can we get some pedal recommendations?
That lower heavy tunning actually comes from a 7th string, which is an extra lower string added to the guitar😈
@GaryHiebner
2 жыл бұрын
I'm using a baritone, which can in fact be tuned lower than your 7 strings with a 25,5 inch scale. Both these baritones I used are 28 inches and can be tuned down to F1 where a standard scale 7 string can probably only go down to Ab. So yeah check into batitones and how they can be used for lower tunings. Its not only about having an extra string :)
@jordanlloyd-mccleary3419

@@GaryHiebner well most guitarists in this particular genre use 7th stringed guitars tuned to Ab anyway(just saying)

@@jordanlloyd-mccleary3419 wouldn't say most since good other half if not more played regular 6 strings especially in the popular C# to B range in the genre or had songs played on a seven because Ibanez endorsed them with them and could play them fine on a 6 string aswell. To this time they where mostly also 25.5". Extended range where intodruced by them around 2001 and 2003 with 27".
