How To Nu Metal - Getting that Nu Metal Guitar Tone

In this video I take a look at the Nu Metal style, and how to get that gritty, low tuned metal sound.
This was one of my favourites styles when I was growing up. Also what struck me was the super low tuned guitars when I first heard it. Before this I was used to E Standard and Drop D. But when I heard these bands and that low guitar tuning, I was hooked!
So check out this video on how to get that ton with low tunings
Guitars Used
Squier Jazzmaster Baritone (as a Bass) tuned to Drop B0
Ibanez MMM1 Baritone - Drop B
Ibanez RGIB6 Baritone - Drop B

    I'm such a 90s guy that no matter how hard I try to write modern metal sruff, my music ALWAYS ends up sounding like nu metal (Korn, Sepultura, Soulfly, ill niño, etc). I've been really trying to not sound like that because nu metal isn't really selling anymore, but after watching this video I think I might as well embrace it. That's what naturally comes out.

    My favourite Nu-Metal style riffs are from Disturbed (on The Sickness) and Soulfly, even though I don’t really listen to much of those 2 bands i just love that groovy tone. Disturbed are very bounce heavy on their riffs on their first two records, I’m not really a Disturbed fan apart from their first record The Sickness being one of my favourite albums. But the bounce riffing just makes you want to move, even though I’m not a huge fan of Draiman’s vocals past The Sickness. As for Soulfly I’m not really a fan but I just love that groovy and tribal esq riffing that just makes you want to groove the fuck out and go wild, even though I’m not a fan of Max’s vocals. Take Disturbed’s bounce riffing, or Soulfly’s groovy tribal riffing on a better rhythmic vocalist and I would be in heaven.

  • @GaryHiebner

    @GaryHiebner

    3 жыл бұрын

    Above 85 and you gonna have to file the nut. So yeah going to B0 you gonna have to mod it, sorry. For a 95 bass string you just need to unwind it a bit by the ball end to get it through the bridge. But that’s pretty easy to do. Takes like 3-5minutes to unwind.

    I'm using a baritone, which can in fact be tuned lower than your 7 strings with a 25,5 inch scale. Both these baritones I used are 28 inches and can be tuned down to F1 where a standard scale 7 string can probably only go down to Ab. So yeah check into batitones and how they can be used for lower tunings. Its not only about having an extra string :)

    The ‘Sports-Metal’ years were a hard time to be a fan of heavy music. All very juvenile and embarrassing. Oh, by the way...all you need for the tone is a PRS run through a Mesa Boogie. Cargo pants and goatee eyebrow piercing are optional.

    Don't you mean all you need is an Ibanez 7-string, Cargo pants, a Mesa and dreadlocks :) I know it was a cheesy time, but I still love it. Something about Nu Metal and the culture just clicked for me. Everyone to their own. That's the cool thing about music. There's different styles and genres and subcultures for all people.

    Nu Metal is actually making a comeback and is reappearing in a lot of modern metal genres. But yeahvit definitely had its corny moments back in the day.
