Thanks Corey! I am finding out that simplifying helps to think less and that helps me phrase more like a vocalist or a horn. The problem is I have spent so much time learning theory that I wasn’t “turning it off” when I would solo. This is gonna help for sure. 👍

Very intuitive approach to get that blues film in the head started. And I got an idea now, to play phrases and to keep discipline by playing understandable phrases. Very helpful though! And great tight grooving backing track quality, makes fun to play with.

I'm teaching my son exactly this. He's been playing for about 2 years and just plays over the whole backing track. All over the place. I'm trying to explain two things. LISTEN first. Don't play anything when the backing track starts. Listen to the whole 12 bars without playing one note. Just LISTEN first. Then when you do start playing, let it BREATHE. Don't play all the time. Find the gaps. Like when you talk. Use commas and periods when you play. It gives the music tension. And makes it more interesting. Brilliant lesson, brother.

it might be worth mentioning to those who traditionally don't count or are new to counting when they play, that to find the count tempo, note that the snare drum hits are on '2' & '4'. (the 'backbeat') I've been in jam/band situations where some people were counting at half or twice the speed. I used to be one of those people at one time. Once you know that the snare drum hits are on '2' & '4' in most 4-count tempos, your counting is made easier.

I remember this exercise in writing class. Intentionally resetting your ideas at intervals to break yourself out of a rut. Great application Corey. Sax players use their breath to do the same thing, a new phrase with each breath. Kenny G ruined that with his circular breathing technique, making his solos too meandering.

Hey Michael, We're really focusing on groups of 2 measures or 4 measures. The numbers I flash on the screen correspond to the measure that have passed by. When it's just 1 and 2, that means we're focusing on 2 measures at a time. When it's 1234, we're focusing on coming up with phrases in that group of 4 measures. Basically, change your ideas every 2 or 4 bars as a practice method.
