For the example of the cyclodecane, why can't u start numbering with the methyl on the left and going to the right of that. That would get you (1,2,3,4,6) which is lower than the way you numbered it which is (1,3,4,5,6)

Also it isn't a tiebreaker so the alphabet wouldn't influence it

You need to take into consideration **all** locants. It's *not* 1,3,4,5,6, but rather it is 1,1,3,4,5,6 which is better than the alternative you're talking about which would give us 1,2,3,4,6,6.
