This is the most clear and detailed explanation of what it takes to move to Italy! I am glad to learn what it cost you to ship your household goods from California. I too have more Kitchen things than I really need but many are Vintage and all are useful to me. I also have too many Books - some will be edited out. Other than that, I would be bringing a Full Bed and Bedding - probably almost no other furniture . And just Clothes. I also thought that you could only claim Citizenship by Ancestry if your Grandfather was a Citizen. My Greatgrandparents moved to the US in the 1890s and my Grandparents were born in the US. I think I have records for my Greatgrandparents birth in Italy so I will look into this. I will watch your Videos and ask questions as my planning develops. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!

We live very near your previous place in Long Beach, CA. And you now live very near the Alps. I have friends who live in Torino. And he has shown me video of piles of snow. How are you coping with the weather difference? I think I can detect a bit of a New York or at least a northeastern accent. So maybe seasonal change isn't quite so different for you? We would really like to live in Italy. But I am thinking somewhere in the south because it is a little closer to the climate we are used to. We are not comfortable in the extreme cold I see in the north. I know you love your area, but have you visited many areas in the south of Italy? We love Sicilia and Puglia. Both of their climates remind me of coastal southern California. Thank you again for your videos. I liked and subscribed. -Joe

There are definitely seasons. Since I lived here the temperature has not dipped below zero very often during the day. The farther south you go, the warmer the winters. Sicily definitely seems closer to Long Beach weather wise. But for me, the pros of the North outweigh the cons of the South.

This is just a note to thank you for such helpful information! For me this leaps to the top of the list for practical advice delivered in a clear and organized way. Thank you! Do you think you would ever expand your house finding services to regions outside of the Northern Italy region?

Hi Jodie Herbert and thanks. Our House Finding Services are for a 3-month period but can be put on hold at any time for any length of time. It's never too early to start looking and researching markets, towns, etc. I think if you start seriously looking six months in advance, a higher % of homes could be sold by the time you are ready to buy. Casorzo is awesome!

Many people would buy an ancient, old home in Italy. Pay attention to the restrictions of municipality or the "belle arti" (fine arts) institute. Many old house are "vincolate" (got restrictions) and you can make modifications only under supervision. In practice, you can only make manteinance the house with specific rules and you cannot make significant modifications, also being the owner, as enlarge windows or open new windows, build a balcony or change the walls inside.

Like anywhere, there are restrictions on what renovations you can do to a house and you need to submit plans. There really are not that many Belle Arti properties, a small percentage. If you are buying an old, classically Italian house, hopefully you won't want to change it much! Certainly cosmetic upgrades, utility upgrades and necessary structural reinforcements...

Regarding driver's licenses: AAA can issue International Driver's Licenses that are good for 1 year and they cost about $50 US, I think. This type of license isn't recognized everywhere, but when I was in Italy in 2019, it was recognized there. I don't think that has changed.

Yes, the International Permit is issued by AAA but it serves as a translation to the driver's license you have from your country. In Italy, residents are "required" to obtain an Italian driver's license within 1 year of becoming residents. The process and test is very challenging...

I was raised on farms and ranches in southeast Texas, so the piedmont area of Italy looks like it would suit my wife and I perfectly !! We are retired with the aches and pains that come with age , but we are looking for a place away from the " bright lights " of Southern California , and the small towns and rural lifestyle looks very nice . My one big question is how easy is medical care accessed in these rural places ???are they only walk in clinics or????

In many towns and villages there are doctors offices and clinics. I live within 20-30 minutes of 4 large hospitals.

There are home improvement stores Self, Brico, Margherita, etc., and there are contractor supply warehouses called Edilizia. They usually aren't more than 20-30 minutes away. Hi spec materials are fewer and farther between.

You can easily speak to clients, have conference calls, video conference calls etc., through programs like Zoom. I do it all the time from my cell phone or computer. You just have to work with the time zone differences.

Hi Lisa, you are very knowledgeable and professional. Thanks for all the info. I have a question. Can I ask my bank in the USA to wire me money to an Italian bank account, e.g. a couple of thousands, even if I am not in the USA but in Italy? Does a bank in the US need to see me in person for such a wire? In short: do I have to cancel my bank account in the USA or can I keep it and wire myself money from my US account whenever I need it in Italy? And if this is possible, how do you do this? Do you make an arrangement with the bank before you move to Italy or doesn't it matter? And how to avoid being taxed by Italy if this money shows up in one's bank account as taxes were already paid on the money many years ago in the US?

Yes, you can ask your bank to do that no matter if you are in Italy or the U.S. They don't need to see you in person. They might need to talk to you on the phone, depending on your bank. You can keep a US bank account. I find one of the best ways to get money from your US Bank here in Italy is to withdraw cash at any Italian atm using your US debit card. If the atm asks if you want the Italian bank to do the conversion, say no. This will give you the best exchange rate. You will probably have to pay a 2.50 fee but that is compared to a 30 fee for wire transfers. Some banks allow you to w/d 1,000 at a time.

I do not know how the consulates are reacting to digital nomads. They might be loosening restrictions or they might not consider this as autonomous income as it comes from employment that could be terminated. You might want to check some of the expat groups or discussions.

Question? While we were born in the ci USA 🇺🇸 we are Italian citizens. My husband researched & secured Italian citizenship for both of us by virtue of my grandparents birth in Italy. So do we as Italian, passport holding Italian citizens, need to secure all these residency requirements?

No. Citizenship is the utmost residency.

This is invaluable information. But looking into step 1-obtaining the codice fiscale-I first encounter the famed IT bureaucracy. On several consulate websites it says “The Codice Fiscale can … be issued … only for some specific purpose, such as paying Italian taxes, or fulfill a specific administrative or legal procedure in Italy, and _cannot be issued for unspecified or future needs_.” This is my first catch-22. I fully intend to purchase property in IT, but at this stage it’s still very much “unspecified.” How do I navigate these tricky waters?

I'm having trouble booking an appointment with the LA consulate. I get the following message, "al momento non ci sono date disponibili per il servizio richiesto". It's Jan 8, I plan to retire in June, and had hoped to get an appointment with the consulate in August for a mid to late fall departure. Any hints as to what may be going on? The biggest problem with moving to northern Italy for an American is taxes. It appears that taxes in northern italy are steep for retirees. Would you consider addressing this.

I am not an accountant and do not speak with any authority on this subject. Everyone's financial situation is different. I don't think that Northern Italy is "steep", especially for retirees. There are areas in the South that offer very attractive tax rates to foreigners who choose to live there. Well done; thank you. 2 Questions: 1: I am an Italian citizen by descent, married for over 3 years ( in US for now) my husband can apply for citizenship but my understanding is that even that requires the B2 language test for him. I am pretty fluent but still....it wasn’t a requirement for me...go figure. 2: I know that as a citizen I can just move and go, and stay ( I assume I don’t need to have a home secured before going, or the visa and Permesso di Sogiorno) Does my husband still need all those docs? I assume so.

Hi Mary Beth. 1 - Yes the B2 was recently added as a requirement for Citizenship by marriage or civil union. 2 - Your husband would need a long-term visa to stay more than 90 days. I'm not sure but I think there is a visa for family members that could cover your situation.

Lots of good info with details. Pleasant to watch and listen to. However, there have been some changes since this video was originally made, so you might consider editing or adding an amendment. While the ER visa info is comprehensive, and anyone can apply for this visa if they can meet the criteria, this visa was designed for retirees and many who want to move to Italy want to, or need to, continue working. There are now other options for moving to Italy - the self-Employment visa and the [brand new ] Digital Nomad visa. Both of these are options for those who want to continue working and are highly trained professionals. This opens the door for more families. A few corrections - 1.You state that you can drive with your US license for 2 years before you need to get the italian license. This is not correct. The law states 1 year from the time residency is established. You also did not note that italian law requires that you are in possession of an International Drivers Permit along with your US license, easily obtained from the AAA. 2.Citizenship through the blood line - you refer people to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is not correct. The correct Ministry is the Ministry of the Interior, however, the best information is found on consulate websites. And it is important to use the consular website with jurisdiction over your place of residence since the documentation requirements are different depending on the consulate. You state that you can not pay utilities with a credit card. This is simply not true.

Thanks for the clarifications Carole. Yes there is the self-employment visa but the numbers issued to any specific country are very low and these are probably one of the hardest visas to obtain. They are also looking for highly-experienced individuals for these visas. Re the Digital Nomad visa, the full requirements, definitions, and professional categories have not been fully outlined as of this writing but this visa does exist, again, for what is defined as highly qualified workers. The digital nomad visa allows a person to stay in Italy for up to one year. I'm not sure how this visa will be structured to include family members. Yes, the grace period for driving on an international driver's license is now 1 year. Where I live, I am unable to pay any of my utilities with a credit card, except for my phone. I can pay electric with my Italian debit card but my water has to be paid either in person, at a bank or tabac or via e-blll from my Italian bank account.

How do you move to Italy without an elective visa but thru a different long term visa? We are buying a property, then applying for a temporary, then permanent visa. if one wants to work remotely from Italy an Elective visa does not permit any work, must have only passive income. The Italian Consulate that serves your area will have the definitive info on what types of long term visas you can get and all of the requirements. But this is what I know, I'm not sure where you are from but for the US, I've never heard of a temporary visa. An ERV does permit remote work if you have your own business and can demonstrate a history of self-sustaining earnings from that business. At this time, if you work for, or are an employee of a non-Italian company, and you are able to work remotely, this does not qualify for the ERV. A "work" visa is one where you are hired and sponsored by an Italian company - before you move.

Hi Sara, not sure exactly what your situation is but most non-EU citizens do need a long-term visa to stay here for more than 90 days in any 180 day period. You can see what your requirements are on the website of the Italian Consulate that serves the state or country you live in.

Hello! Ciao! I was wondering if you have a connection for a tax specialist? I want to buy a little place in Italy and use it part time, but as it may be over 183+ days, I realize I will run into being an Italian resident for tax purposes. So that is a concern before I do anything of course. Many people advice France is far better for retirees but I also love Italy! thanks for any info that would guide me through complex subject that I am sure you might have had to deal with since you live there! By the way, I am aware of double taxation treaty, I just need to understand the risks for real, i.e.buy for relatively finanically small price, but get squashed in taxes! A presto!

Ciao. Just want to mention first that buying here does not make you an Italian resident. You have to go thru the long-term visa process to get residency in Italy (see our uber helpful video on this). After you achieve residency your primary tax obligation is to Italy. If you are a U.S. citizen you still have to file in the U.S. but you probably won’t have to pay taxes in the U.S. due to the double taxation treaty. Taxes are higher in Italy but the lower cost of living often offsets that - except for high income/net worth folks. There is also the issue that many U.S. brokerage firms will not keep you as a client once you change residency out of the U.S. I don’t have accountants that I recommend but I do recommend starting with one in the U.S. (or your country of residence) who is familiar with tax laws in both countries.

And did you find any issues regarding opening a bank account because of FATCA regulations - I have heard from reputable sources that many foreign banks do not want US citizens as customers because of the onerous and costly regulatory/reporting requirements imposed by the US authorities.

My husband's father was from Italy. I solo di Elba to be exact. Became an American citizen in 1957. Does my hubs have a right for dual citizenship to Italy?

You may already know this but I am saying it for those who are not sure... If your Husband is able to obtain Italian citizenship by descent, he will no longer require a visa for anything in Italy as he will be treated legally the same as any Italian who was born there. The spouse can get citizenship as well if married long enough (for sure past 3 years but can be sooner, for instance if you have children) and can pass the Italian language test at B1 level.

How about if my current employer would allow me to work from Italy? Can I stay employed with a UC company but live in Italy?

I do not know how the consulates are reacting to digital nomads. They might be loosening restrictions or they might not consider this as autonomous income. If you are an employee of someone else's business, that is not autonomous, and you could theoretically lose your job and your income at any moment. But even as a self-employed individual, you have to show ample, steady income for an extended period of time. I had my own business for 15 years when I applied for my visa and was able to continue that business after I moved.

You'd be liable for Italian tax and social contributions (I think the US calls this payroll taxes?) - how would your US employer pay this? Also, usually, you'd have to explain why your employer needs to send you to Italy.

Yes, we help citizens of all countries. However!!!!! There are definitely restrictions for Australians buying in Italy. It is hard to pin down the exact status at the moment and as things are quite fluid you should definitely check on this through the government before pursuing. Do not rely on things you read online - this is definitely a legal matter. If either of you have other citizenship, that could be a better way of purchasing here.

Not a huge difficulty to open an Italian bank account. But you need to do it in Italy, unless you qualify as a private banking client (€5mil+!).

You suggested Credit Card companies will NOT renew the card if one moves to Italy!! How about cards from Global Banks like Citi?

It just depends. If your address and account are established in the United States, even for global banks like Citibank, Chase, you may have to apply for a new card using your Italian address. I had several Chase accounts and could not change my address to a foreign (Italian) address. But each case and bank are different!!!

You could open a PO box in the US and have a friend forward it to you. Or try to change most correspondence to paper less delivery. If you live here, it's best to open an Italian bank account and transfer money from the US a few times a year.

once you ge a US # or any international phone number practically every personal call all over the world including some businesses can be done on Whatsapp for free. I have a T mobile prepaid phone and use that number to call anyone in the world on Whattsapp for free. Ofcourse the other party has to have one. (0% of the people who have a cell ph bnumber have a WA acconunt and today 85% of the international personal calls are done on WA for FREE. Hope this helps!

When you port your number, you just keep the number, not the service. All calls that come thru to that number are forwarded to your new phone.

HI, I WOULD APPROACH YOU WITH FEES MENTIONED IN YOUR WEBSITE, But just wnt to explore the town via google, plz elaborate in which town you living, as i am interesting in the same village/town you selected after long search.

I live in England. If I were to go to Italy I would probably drive there. So re registering the car would be important. One is convenience. I can take things with me. Also my dog would not be distressed in a car but probably would he in a cage and put in a plane hold for several hours

But if you relocate to Italy in two years you need an Italian drivers license. And that requires a written test in Italian and a road test.

That test is a bear!!! You only have 30 questions on the written test, but there are 7,300 possible questions so the amount of info you have to study is nuts.

Do you only cover northern Italy?
