PART 3 COST OF LIVING IN ITALY AS AN EXPAT: Move to Rome, Florence, Tuscany, Italian Villages

Welcome back to my series on how to move to Italy and the cost of living in Italian cities and towns, such as Rome and Florence. In Part 1 I looked at finding an apartment and the cost of accommodation. In Part 2 I discussed weekly grocery shopping and food costs. In this episode I share with you advice for monthly costs as an expat - expenses such aa phone, wifi, eating out, weekend trips, etc. You can find many more videos on my channel about how I learned Italian and moved to Italy. Making these episodes alone is very time consuming and expensive and if you would like to support my work, you can find my Patreon page here:

When I was 16 my uncle was stationed in Italy and flew me out for Christmas break , at the time I didn’t know I had a toxic mental abuser of a boyfriend .. he called everyday of my trip to tell me how much of a shitty gf I was for leaving the country and enjoying my self while he had to stay back in the u.s ... I tried so hard to enjoy that trip and really embrace everything .. I fell in love with Italy but couldn’t really enjoy it the way I should’ve .. looking back at it now as a adult I had a once in a life time experience as a 16 year old American and I let a dumb boy ruin it 🥴 seeing your videos help me remember things on the trip I may have forgotten because I was too sad. Now I can not wait to take my amazing husband to Italy who is also military😆 and change my whole experience ❤️✨

OMG, I can sooooooo relate when you talk about the costs of going out with friends! This is years ago now, but I used to hate that I ate something simple, no drinks, but still had to pay for a (for me, considering) gigantic bill divided up evenly. And I was upset not because I was strapped for cash, but because I didn’t think it fair to have to pay for something I didn’t consume. And nobody gave it a second thought. Now that may make me a scrooge (which I don’t think I am), if yes, so be it.

Thank you so much for this series. I am old enough to be your mother but still find your experience so inspiring. I am at a point in life where, for so many years now, it's as if I have no life; I'm not even living. I spent two weeks in rural Southern Italy house-hunting in 2018 and have been obsessed with moving there and creating a new beautiful life ever since. For me, my biggest fear is being older and not having - or knowing how - to create an independent online source of income. Your videos are so lovely and you are such a charming, beautiful, and gentle soul. I once wanted to be a writer, and wrote poetry. I've lost all the things I once loved: literature, poetry, flowers, nature, books, art; all of these have been lost to an endless grind of soul-sucking meaningless work, crime and endless wildfire smoke, traffic and worse, here in California. I actually hate it here so much! Anyway, you remind me of a younger version of myself, when I was full of dreams and hope. All the best to you, Kylie.

Beautytrends77 I don’t know anything about licensing and stuff. But do know that most stylists in small towns only know one basic thing for long hair and thats cutting it a straight line. They do an absolutely wonderful job but I think if you don’t have any ‘conpetition’ you could be a big hit. Especially with the ‘older’ ladies they most of the time get their hair done almost every week.

Hi Kylie! I NEVER comment under any KZread videos, but I've been watching your videos and following you on Instagram for such a long time, and you deserve all the love and support for your beautiful and gentle and honest content! I lived in Florence for a few months last year before I headed to college, and I still think of Florence as I think of an old lover (longingly)... I was wondering if you could talk to us a bit about socializing in Italy? How did you find friends after you arrived? I feel like it's a challenge for expats not to stay in the 'foreigner-circles', so I was curious about your experiences with that. Thank you so much for your hard work and beautiful art Kylie, it is so appreciated!

Hi Morghan, as an Italian who used to live in the UK (meaning, fluent in English and happy to stay in touch with non-Italians as often as I can), I'm so pleased by your approach and your desire to reach out to Italians! I live in Rome and know quite a few expat groups who are very open to Italians joining in, resulting in very heterogeneous groups. Quite a few romances have resulting from this, too - between the expats and Italians.

I've started getting the urge to move to Italy about 2-3 times every week recently. When you compare that life, simple or less simple, to what we have in North America's cosmopolitan cities: crazy cost of housing, no soil that comes with it. Versus in Italy you can grow things practically anywhere, land is a quarter of the price with 5x more area for the dollar, the soil is fertile. It seems insane that North Americans keep living like we do, with all our vegetables designed and grown for "shelf life" instead of "life". If you become rich you can buy a detached home in SF, Seattle, New York, etc. But those are rare odds. Want to know what's far higher odds? Your odds of learning Italian, or French, or Spanish, or Greek and enjoying the simple life in the Mediterranean.

Like you Kylie, I have a Greek mother (and father) and they both taught me how to save which has stood me in good stead my entire life. They also gave me access to a European passport for which I am eternally grateful.

Perfect video to watch in the morning with a cup of coffee. I really love Italy (Portugal the same!) when coffee and a glass of wine are the cheapest on the menu.

So helpful and interesting to hear the differences of living in Italy compared to other locations! Things like fast internet we take for granted in many places and these utilities add up quickly! It's really admirable that you've thrown yourself so completely into a new culture and I truly appreciate your vulnerability in sharing the pros & cons of challenging yourself this way. I love traveling alone because it makes us stronger and more independent women and I can't wait to be able to see Italy some day! This year has been quite a difficult one so these videos have been a wonderful ray of sunshine. You're amazing - take care!!! 💕💕

Love the video! I am not planning a move to Italy but to Brasil. The best part of the video imo is when you talk about mental health. Even a strange and stable mind needs it. Subscribed 💪🏼😎

Kylie, I've only recently discovered you online and I'm blown away by your stunning films. You are incredibly generous in all the insight you provide and you're giving this fellow Australian hope that my Italian dream is still within reach (although Crazy Corona has put it temporarily on hold). Mwah!
