How to Model a Character Mesh in Blender | Game Character Tutorial #1
In this tutorial series you will be taken through the full development process to create a game ready and animated character which can be used in the Unity or Unreal game engine.
In the first part of this series, we will use a model sheet to break down the
different elements of a character and how to go about creating each of them. After making the plan, an image template will be used to help model the silhouette of the body and create a base mesh, ready for detailing in the next part.

Thx bro, you save my caracter.
FINALLY I'VE FOUND A TUTORIAL FOR BEGINNERS 2 weeks i search this, wtf youtube show me this before. +1 like and followers thanks again man
Literally one of the few videos that actually has the right to call itself a tutorial. You have this more organized and notarized than a university text book. Meanwhile most other tutorial channels I've watched force me to set the playback speed to 25% because they spit out so much information, with terms they never explain in video, clicking on things they never preface, at the speed of that Micromachine commercial guy.
I was literally so confused with the other videos, theu would be called "how to model a character" and all they would do in the video would be talk with terms that i dont know, not show any references and start talking about it theorically. This video made it look so easy im not even feeling stressed anymore, more like MOTIVATED, i cant wait to try this and genuinely excited 🕺🕺💞
i am a beginner and this TUTORIAL RIGHT HERE changed the way i look at modeling completely, like seriously good job and thank you for this magnificent tutoring lesson!
This video alone may have decided my future as game developer. Perfectly and simply explained. From the depth of my heart thank you for your time and effort
Thank you so much for this. As a beginner to 3d modelling I've been struggling with the concept of "clean" topology. This video has explained more to me than anything that I've read in the past three months.
I have just completed this course and had to come back to the first video to add into the comments, to say to anyone who is wanting to learn about modelling a character in Blender and everything that goes with it, that it is so well taught throughout this course, and that the course could set you up for a career in the 3D world. Michael has such a wonderful way about explaining even very detailed aspects and very much made me think of Blender Guru and the I think what was it, er, oh yeah the 'The cooking donuts on telly and in films series'. Blender Guru would be so proud of you Michael.

Thank you very much, that means a lot!
Thanks so much for your videos, Michael. I am working on my first character model for my immersive sim coop game, following your workflow throughout. I spent probably 3 hours today just getting the base mesh to an acceptable state, and then modelling the fingers and attaching the damn thumb to the hand! A lot of that time too was spent learning how to manually fix my sloppy topology, converting the numerous tris and ngons to quads. It was a really interesting exercise to get done and fulfilling to finally solve. I am learning that a lot of this using this software and being a 3D artist involves problem solving, and a thinking approach to how to fix those problems. So far it has been a great experience and so thank you for this series, it is exactly the kind of help I was looking for. I look forward to my next 20 or so hours I will spend in this series, cheers!

That's great to hear, I'm glad these tutorials are proving useful. It's always really satisfying when you put in the time to create any 3D model and you get something out at the end you have completely made yourself. As you get more practice in, the faster you start to identify and solves problems, so keep up the good work!
I've been looking at Blender for 5 yrs on and off. Believe me, brother, this tutorial is life changing. I had no clue Vertex Sliding was that easy.
You have an extremely good skill in conveying a tutorial unlike many other Blender youtubers. Impressive.
Fantastic tutorial, great depth and description, cheers for this!
Great tutorial! Really enjoy the explanations of concepts as you model.
This series is insane. Well done. Can't wait to get started.
Amazing tutorial, everything is very well explained
This is by far the best tutorial I've ever seen for a beginner. This guy deserves more subs!
Thanks heaps mate! I really needed that lesson on topology and hand modelling.
awesome stuff, cant wait to dig into this
The feet modeling section was the most cursed thing I've seen in a while, but phenomenal tutorial
Great tutorial 🚀
Take the first step towards creating your own game character with this helpful tutorial! You can do it!
im trying to make a game myself and this is an amazing tutorial! the only thing i'd say is that the thumb is a little short but other than that this tutorial is one of the best i've seen on youtube, you speak very clearly and have a nice pace, thanks a lot brother!
Great work
Thanks, Great tutorial, done subscribed.
This is by far the best tutorial/showcase/walkthrough on the god damn internet. Im sorry but for some reason things didnt click with any of the other videos i watched. I watched this and things just hit me. So thanks for that big homie
I Been doing this type of stuff in zbrush but seeing you do this with a templete in blender is mind blowing, i actually wanna go try it out in blender now
pretty nice workflow! have a nice day man
this is great bro keep up the good work you are amazing✨✨

This is a great video, do you mind making a tutorial or brief video on how you'd do the modelling with a four legged animal?
Followed along with the whole tutorial thinking you were making a human and was very confused by the feet! lol
please tell me where to find templates I don't mean the specific temps you used I want to find multiple
The shoulder part or loop cut is doesn't work, i was follow the tutorial. But the shoulder part still cannot loop cut nicely
nearly every time i try grabbing a vert, it only moves the side of the cube that is closest to the camera, and not the back side. how does yours move both sides at once?

Hi Bryan, make sure that you are in X-ray mode by pressing "Alt" + "Z". Then marquee select (click and drag over) the front vertex, this will also select vertices behind it and you can then move them at the same time.

Hey, I did make them myself. A few people have asked so I've made a template for a male. You can download it for free from the Patreon here: www.patreon.com/posts/human-templates-89905158
I don't understand what I did wrong, when I get to the legs they don't separate even when I move the vertices to redirect flow, it works if I turn of snapping
I at a point where the edge loops wont connect like yours, they are cut off at certain points, also i cant edge smooth using "GG". Im kinda stuck
great tutorial. I'm getting these visual bugs where part of the model disappears around the groin area. Any tips on how to fix it? Noticed it when shaping the model to get the roundness. 16:00
@ironbarkgames

Hey there, it's probably the "Merge" distance on the modifier being too large and the vertices in that area are so close together that they connect up along the centre line.
@vortexgaming4590

@@ironbarkgames ok thanks. I was able to fix part of it then I noticed some broken vertices around the shoulders, so I'm probably gonna start over following your tutorial again. Again, great tutorial, easy to follow along for a noob like me lol. And thanks for the explanation.
6:54 he push G and X for a straight line
Around 15:00, while sliding edges, I've noticed that instead of moving the vertices it just creates new ones as if it were an edge loop, and then if I try to select the edge again to slide it slides the edges along both the front and back of the arm. Is there a reason this is happening, any way I could get it to just move the vertices that are already selected?
@ironbarkgames

I suspect what has happened is you have accidentally pressed "V" which tears vertices creating a new separate line of them. Select all of the vertices of your mesh by pressing "A", then press "M" for merge and select "By Distance" to merge those duplicate vertices back with the originals if they are still on top of each other and haven't been moved.
i can i use this mesh body flow for male basic topology please I'm waiting for your answer

Yes, you can use the same process to create a male character. Here's a free male template if you need it: www.patreon.com/user?u=88671774

At 23:49, I can't seem to join the edges between the knuckles like you do, it forms a wrong triangular face underneath the fingers. What could be the reason? I tried to apply scale but it didnt work.

At the "Mirroring the Mesh" stage, CTRL+R doesnt seem to work for me. Need Help Please.

If the hotkey "Ctrl+R" doesn't work, you can access the function from "Edge > Loop Cut and Slide". Just make sure you are in edit mode first (by pressing tab) otherwise you won't be able to make any edits to the mesh.

May i ask you How we suppose to dino mesh..💀
What about weapons . Do you model weapons or you just do characters. Id realy ejoy a weapon(sword,axe,etc) tutrial to get the basics down. Id rather learn from you than any other place
@ironbarkgames
4 ай бұрын
Unfortunately I don't have any tutorials on weapons, so for now you'll need to find another resource. I will say though that you can apply the general principles of finding a side on template/ image of the weapon and modelling it like with this base mesh. Then from the perspective of hard surface modelling, you can take some of the techniques from the next video of making armour.
This is right topology sorry I try do female character i don't topology what's why I'm asking to you
@ironbarkgames
3 ай бұрын
Hi there, this type of topology would be suitable for a female character, however this character in the video is going to be wearing armour and is a humanoid alien. So the topology for every character is going to vary depending on the design.
