How to Mix Yellows: Two-Colour Mixing

In this video I demonstrate how to mix and handle a variety of yellows in oil paint using my 'Two-Colour Mixing' method. This will help you mix the colours that you want, reliably and cleanly.
I show you 4 ways to mix yellow:
0:00 Intro to mixing yellows
0:40 Mix 1: bright green and cadmium yellow deep
2:35 Mix 2: bright green and cadmium orange
4:30 Mix 3: permanent green light and cadmium orange
5:40 Mix 4: viridian green and cadmium orange
These mixes will have all the advantages of Two-Colour Mixing: allow seamless colour shifts and vibrant, translucent colours even when diluted for washes and glazes.
The principles of Two-Colour Mixing are:
- arrange your paints according to the 'Color Line' (see my 'Practical Color Theory' video for more detail)
- identify where the color you want to mix sits on the Color Line
- don't use the color itself, but pick one color from either side on the line
- darken the color by moving further away on one side or the other - don't use black
- only use white to lighten a mix
- add small amounts of paint at a time
- keep your knife/brush clean
This video is one of a series looking at mixing all the different colours in my Colour Line. Each video uses the same principles which I explain in my 'Practical Colour Theory...' video - it may help you if you watch this first...
I will be bringing out more videos on colour mixing in the next few weeks, along with those looking at great artists and how they paint, so don't forget to subscribe!

Judith Prentis If you use the same pairs I used to mix the shades of yellow but use different proprtions of each colour, perhaps favouring the greens you should get the tree leaf colours.

Thanks Ian. Had to watch this one a second time, as I think my eye is biased towards green i.e. I had difficulty seeing the yellow in the final few mixings. Perhaps this explains why I have so much trouble identifying turquoise! Beresford

Beresford CAMPBELL Green is the colour we get when we darken yellow but it should be called dark yellow to differentiate from the greens found between yellow and blue. If yellow was called light green we would not have a problem with its greenish hue when it is darkened.

@@beresfordcampbell2831 Try using violet to shade your out of the tube yellow. If you use the true complement you won't get a third color like green.

@@JasonAdkinsArtist Thanks Jason, shall try this tip. Ian is my art teacher, but I could not ask him directly due to college shutting down at the start of the epidemic. College re-opened last week!

Hello, Ian. Would you consider doing a tutorial on oranges? It is my most frustrating color. I have a difficult time mixing lighter, softer, oranges and peach colours, without making them chalky. Thank you, from US 🧡

Hi Janine well you just hit the nail on the head. I think the way artists glaze putting warm colours down first is because they could see orange was a problem to solve because when you add white to orange the quality of the colour reduces quickly. So to lighten an orange you glaze a thin layer of orange over a white ground or a lighter colour ground such as pale yellow.. The light colour comes through to lighten without making it chalky.

@@GreatArtistsSteal I am glad to see I am not the only one who has "orange" troubles! I will try your suggestion, and remind myself, no matter how much I try to add white, it is not the answer! LOL
