How To Mix & Paint Skin Tone With Watercolors: Chapter 1 - A Light Skin Tone
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hi everyone!
I get asked a lot over on Instagram about how to paint skin, and in this video I'll show you not only how I build layers of watercolor with tonal values and glazing, but also how to find different hues for a light skin tone using basic color theory.
This is the first part of a series about how to paint skin with more chapters to follow over the coming months that will focus on darker skin tones.
I hope you enjoy the video!

This was simple but effective I always panic while painting/coloring bc I feel like I need to layer hundred accent colors in the skin for it to look nice lol

I bet it does look nice! I sometimes think my style is too simple so I might try adding more hues to my paintings 🤗💙
Excuse me why the hell have I been anxiously mixing at least five colors every time I wanted to get skin colors? This video just accidentally explained why my watercolouring always sucked

I’m CERTAIN your watercolours don’t suck, because at the heart of all we do being creative and enjoying ourselves is the only thing that matters right? I might start experimenting with a 5 colour mixture 😱 that sounds magical to me 💙

It's great when you spend hours watching videos trying to figure out a technique(s) and you finally find a video where the teacher explains it in a clear way and goes over everything along the way so that it makes more sense. This is one of those videos. Things just clicked because of the way you explain it. Thank you. Now, let me go find the subscribe button

Woahhh!! Ive been on and off into watercolors for a year now, i found it difficult it to know when to use brush techniques as well as how to swatch skin tones. Turns out when you practice in a bubble, you dont know when to use techniques on a subject. Then bam! your tutorial came along and showed the way!! This is an awesome video and tutorial. I love how crispy yet soft-looking your artstyle is. Its soothing and sharp at the same time. Also can relate to drawing sad looks in boys eyes 😅 I hope you keep on making more videos and also have fun along the way. You made it look so easy and organized, shows how much practice and intuition goes into this too. Thank you 🤍 once again, i feel more adventurous with watercolor

Those are totally legitimate ways of doing it though! I don’t prefer the method using brown, I’m not sure why, but the method you described first sounds like you’re glazing to get the colours which is really clever 🤩 I think this is what Patsu.x does to make his skin tones

Get some serious separation and granulation with the blue and sienna, any ideas on alternate colors?
For beginning, which brand of paper and colour are better? Thx
One question; during the demonstration at around 7:10 or so, after the first wash, do you let everything dry before you start adding the darker layers?
@Finelinernerd
3 жыл бұрын
Back then I used to yeah, but now I charge in with more colour before it dries (which only came once I had some confidence in what I was doing). The safe way to do this is to paint each layer separately and let them dry completely in between to control your build up 🖤
the best video on lighter skin tones ive ever seen! i almost cried when my sketch was ruined by the terrible orange mix i made for the skin lol is there any way to fix it if u went too dark?
@Finelinernerd
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’m so glad you liked it 🤗 about saving your painting, I’m not sure, you could try wetting it all and lifting the paint off with a paper towel, but this will ruin any details you have painted and isn’t a great solution, so it may be best to start again. If it’s any consolation I start my paintings over from scratch frequently 🙈

When using french ultramarine how do you prevent granulation ruining a nice smooth wash?
@Finelinernerd
3 жыл бұрын
Hiya! I just use very little of it in skin tone, just enough to neutralise the yellow/red mixture 🖤🖤 if you want something that granulates less “fine” versions of Ultramarine exist but I’m not sure in which brands 🖤🖤
I've seen you use brushes and lay down tiny fine lines, so out of interest, is it a style choice to use the coloured pencils for those final details rather than going in with a fine paint brush?
@Finelinernerd
3 жыл бұрын
Funny you say that because I now use more saturated watercolour and tiny paintbrush for lines around skin and a black micron pens for eyes, nostrils etc. but yeah the pencil was a stylistic choice before, I just decided that it was too harsh and switched to paint instead 🖤

Well explained but disappointed that your whole range is for white people. When I i read it's for skin tones i would expect to see a diverse example. Not just various shades of Caucasian.
