How to Mix & Master Metal in Ableton.

Ойын-сауық

In this video, we’ll go over how I tracked, mixed & mastered my most recent metal track. The idea here is to steer clear from fancy aftermarket plugins and showcasing the capability of stock plugins in Ableton.
0:00 Intro
0:40 Signal Chain
1:55 Guitars
13:40 Bass
18:19 Drums
43:52 Mastering
56:45 Outro

    @BabaGhanoushMusic I need help! I did everything in this tutorial and it sounded great! Then I printed to wave and it sounded like absolute garbage. I got Ozone and Neutron and it helped a little but it still sounds crappy outside of my monitors. This is totally on me because this tutorial rocked and helped my mix a ton, but what should I do? Are the settings in this obsolete once using 3rd party plug-ins? I am so confused. Sounds great through monitors and like garbage in my car :( (this tutorial rocked though)

    Thank you so much! This is exactly the kind of tutorial I needed. Started learning with Ableton recently so this was really helpful. Nothing too complicated, straight to the point and everything described well for even a beginner to understand.

    Trying to help as best as I can, thanks bro. This is good example of how to begin on a mix and what plugins to use, then adjust accordingly to each song, but this varies too (that’s the tricky part).

    Happy to help. Try to keep in mind that every song is different and results will vary based on a lot of different factors such as different guitars, tunings, added instruments and what not. But hopefully it serves as a good basis on what we need to achieve for each song.

    I’m using lite. how would I use a regular compressor in place of the glue compressor? Also I am limited to 8 tracks. Is there a way I will be able to do the drum routing the same?

  • @BabaGhanoushMusic

    @BabaGhanoushMusic

    Lite might be a little tough to work with when it comes to comparing with my tutorial. I would say just keep the drums on one track and try to mix within the plugin as best as you could, but it’s going to be limited. Or what you can do is write the song out using only one drum track, then bounce out the rest of the instruments, then in a new project use the one audio track for the bounced instruments then use the remaining 7 to midi map and mix your drums, then bounce the mixed drums out to one audio track then place that back in the first session as an audio track then proceed as normal. Try to compare the compressor settings to how I do in glue compressor, don’t let it compress past -5 DB.

    Im currently struggling at making a choice at which daw i want to buy. I have some experience in cubase and most of my experience comes from the free cakewalk daw. I make a lot of metal, BUT i also work a lot with the NI maschine mk3 and do a lot of loops with beats and synths. Do you think i will be happy with using ableton 11?

  • @BabaGhanoushMusic

    See if there’s a free or lite version somewhere and dive in to see if you like it. My DAW history started with Adobe Audition, then Logic Pro X and now Ableton. I personally like the workflow and snappiness of Ableton and I like that I can work on it on either Mac OS or Windows and the keyboard shortcuts are almost the same. I think the onboard effects aren’t too bad either and I do find myself using a lot of them. I say give it a try and see how it works for you. Just remember that they all essentially do the same things except some DAWs come with better plugins than others.

    You do change your tempo/speed automation at the mastering section? How do your guitar tracks behave like this? I'm watching this, because i'm sick of cubase and want to switch to ableton eventually

  • @BabaGhanoushMusic

    @BabaGhanoushMusic

    4 ай бұрын

    Yes I change the tempo via automation in the master track. Th tempo change only affects the bass and drum tracks to be played faster and slower, then I record the guitars over that. You CAN change the tempo of pre recorded guitars, I usually don’t because I don’t want my guitars to sound unnatural, but I’m sure you can get away with it.

    Yup. FL’s stock plugins are fantastic from what I can remember. Just try and match the plugins from Ableton to FL’s as close as you can along with its settings.
