    This video sent me down a sound design and audio engineering rabbit hole I didn't know I needed. Some things, luckily, I was doing out of common sense and taste, but now I understand the science behind these decisions. Like... I subscribed to fabfilter today, got that TSR, found a clipper in wavs & watched a ton of tutorials over n over, then some sound design stuff, & now im watching this video for at least the 7th time now and it finally allll makes sense. PQ3 locked in!!!! VVS Good stuff bruh!!!

    @@effortless4588 so, look up fabfilter’s official videos on the ProQ n ProQ3, then sage audio vids on it, then watch this guy sseb’s video on EQ, then watch this guy sikky beats video on sound design- and then come back to this video. if it didnt make sense before, it will deff make sense now. Pretty sure homie has some vids on sound design too so check those out if u wanna dive deeper. N if it doesnt, watch them over and over again until you have the info down pat. i watched this video multiple times, almost after every other video to further understand anything about phasing etc.. Dont think too hard tho. May be intimidating, but Its pretty simple. Ur probably doin a lot of this stuff already! Have fun n good luck. To GOOD MUSIC 🥂, pun intended in the best way possible

    Please do a part 2, very useful tricks indeed. Sidechaining in my mixes always feels like I have to sacrifice either the kick or 808, and it becomes very hard when the 808 changes pitch and the kick doesn't. I always find myself with at least one note in the 808 pattern sounding off with a kick, to the point where I'll usually just remove the kick and have 808 only for those notes. Now I usually just "sidechain" some frequencies where I see the most clashing (Neutron EQ shows this well), but the results are still not ideal.

  • @prodsyren

    @prodsyren

    I started to use kickstart 2 for this where you can select which frequency range you want to sidechain which is so much better than just ducking the full volume of the 808

    what helps me with that problem is using the same kick, but reversing the polarity of the kick that plays at the exact time the higher pitched 808 plays. + sidechain with kickstart In most cases the phase aligns better with that. try it out ;)

    Guys, don't forget to pitch your kick, maybe this is sound crazy, but when you will start do it, you will hear what pitch position of your kick are glueing with 808 best way, and i recommend try it with warping and without, because first one not touch phase and last one does. Then, when you think that you found this best pitch position, go to start time, in ableton we have it on the right side of our screen, so try to put your 808 little bit on right side, sometimes you will don't need it, sometimes you need just 2-4 ms, sometimes 8, but not more than 12 i think. This all about phase too. When you will hear glueing between kick and 808 (best knock and punch) this mean that you found best phase position. And then, guys, just do this MIKE DEAN trick, make kick and 808 sound seamlessly on low freq, just make 808 volume like you need for good sound on lows, then turn kick volume down, you can do this with kick punch sound or even without, choice is yours. And when you finally did it, you will need a punch, so just grab any eq, make bell very wide curve around 1000hz (wide - q=0.35) and just boost it around 3-6 db, sometimes kicks are enough boosted on this mid freq, sometimes not. After all this you will have beautiful results, just practice, try another kick, another 808 and practice, practice. You will achieve so good low end and still great punch from kick on mids, I hope this will help.

    Honestly i feel like 99% of people struggle to get their kicks right in the first place.. All this phase alignment is important if kick and base play tougether but i really believe the biggest issue for most people is that they dont get a nice kick or they use samples, so they dont understand the kick, which is of corse very crucial to have a good base...

    My issue is not knowing which ones are going to boom like crazy in the car, and which ones end up surprising me by sounding dead in the car. There's this 808 I use often and even though in my flat response Sony MDRV06 headphones it sounds tamed, sounds normal, isn't booming too crazy or nothing, as soon as I go play the song out in my car the 808 is hitting so god damn hard that it literally seems like my game plan was to overly boom out the mix due to the low end! And then there's other 808's that sound like they are hitting way too heavy in my headphones, but will surprisingly sound good in the car. I can mix everything pretty solid except for the low end! The low end be playing games with my head!

    I think the same logic would apply, find the point where the waves are interfering/masking each other and clip at that spot. Though probably the simplest solution is to use some kind of envelope to make sure the kick doesn't overstay its punch with the 808.

  • @jm.Beats.
    @jm.Beats.10 ай бұрын

    Why not just sidechain and use the Comp section of FL Limiter to duck the 808 whenever the kick hits? It allows you to customize the duck (release time, volume, etc) considering some people require stock plugins and takes a fraction of the time. The reddit question asked how to fix kick and 808 clashing and you went on a rant about phase. I understood what you were showing, but keep it simple.

    If you use a clipper on your drum bus, is it bad to also push your mix into a clipper on the master? Cuz I find when I clip my drum bus I can get it sounding good on its own. But the second I use a compressor and clipper on the master it’s like it loses all of its punch, and I don’t push it into a clipper hard at all.

    I don't do any of that. That's to complicated. I use wave lab, and what I do is I take a kick and I'll highlight some of the kick part at the end and then I'll take the 808 and blend it that way. When you right click in wave lab there's an option for pasting whatever you copied, that's what I do, I paste. If you go up to editor in wave lab there's an option for mix paste, this I don't do. It doesn't sound right to me. My kick and 808's mixed sound find to me.
