Track: Alpha Steppa - Mek We March (ft. Cologne)
Here's a little mix demo with the Akai MidiMix + Ableton Live screen capture so you can get an idea of what's happening behind the scenes. This midi mixer has the same functions as any midi mixer currently available in any price range, but it's cheap, and very small. The mapping is very simple: 1. Kick, 2. Snare, 3. Hats / Percussion, 4. Chop / Skank, 5. Brass, 6. Glockenspiel, 7. Nothing, 8. Vocal, 9. Bass (master) ... the sends are A. Long Delay, B. Reverb, C. Short Delay, D. 'Earth Rocker Reverb' for bass, but I don't use it in this clip. I also have a filter control for the reverb, reverb volume, short delay time and long delay feedback loop. That's it. If you like the video let me know and I'll make some more! ** And share with your friends! **

    Hi dude, quick question. I have the midimix set up for a sweet dub setup. However, if i turn my fader down on say chops buss, it all goes quiet. It looks like your delays etc over ride the fader. How are you doing this? I use studio one, but the principle should be the same. Big thanks. Hope your enjoying the summer man.

    Hey, great video and it has prompted me to get a midimix. After playing around a bit with some self recorded tracks, there's something I can't get my head round.. The mixer, and many more expensive mixers all seem to have 2 or maybe 3 effects sends /returns... So how would I have more effects, say delay, reverb, modulation, reverb with say a phaser or different types of delay and be able to apply them to any given track with only 2 sends. I must be missing something obvious. Any help would be awesome. Thanks

  • @AlphaSteppa

    @AlphaSteppa

    Hi Harry, you can bank with this controller, but I also use another method... I put 2 groups of fx per send, then assign a button to toggle one group off and the other on, so I can quickly change fx without altering the mapping. For example I'll have a spring reverb and a plate reverb on the same send and toggle between them during the mix. You could also buy a controller with more pots 🙌shantea make something similar but much bigger, highly recommended

To be a bit clearer what I've been trying to do is take say, my snare channel and records it's output to a fresh audio track whilst manipulating the aux. Standard Dub practice of course but for some reason the recorded audio is still coming back without fx. Sorry to drone on but this is obviously a big deal as a dubbist ; cheers

    @@patkelly3966 I think this would depend on your audio interface, but an easier option could be to just record the automation you want then export that one track > file export > [either solo track or select snare when exporting], then you can save the snare with fx and import back into the project.

    1 - the sends are controlled using the dials, row 1 is return 1 (echo), row 2 is return 2 (reverb) and row 3 is return 3 (short delay)2 - yes I produced this3- I’ve tried them all, and even though this is the cheapest, it’s the most reliable, yes it’s small but it doesn’t take long to get used to, and even though it’s plastic, the plastic is durable and lightweight, which is great for travel. There are surprisingly few midi mixers on the market, I’m still waiting for a proper 16 channel mixer which would be great for studio work.4 - A few of the dials which are unused (for example you don’t need fx on the kick), so instead I use those dials to tweak fx, I have delay time, delay feedback, reverb filter and reverb volume.- I’ll make a tutorial soon on how to midi map the whole thing, it’s pretty simple!

    Greetings! I'm a legally blind musician/producer/singer from Switzerland. I'm really interested in adding dub mixes in my live performaNces. Could you please describe me the full mapping of your MidiMix (I also own one), please? Can't see the video 'cause of my vision impairments. BLESSED LOVE & NUFF RESPECT! PS Love Alpha Steppa productions and consciousness.

    Greetings and love, I'm gonna make a template and put a link in the description to this video. Are you using ableton live? If it's easier we can speak on the phone or in person next time I'm in Switzerland. One love.

    Here it is! www.steppas.com/downloads/steppas-live-dub-mix-template.als it's simplified for the Akai MIDI Mix, you can drop in your stems and give it a try, faders are volume, master being bass in this case, mutes are mutes, knob row one sends to delay return, row two to reverb and row three to phaser. For channel 1, the sends aren't needed for the kick, so I've assigned them to (from top to bottom) delay feedback, delay time, reverb filter. That's it! You can change the FX in the returns for your own, and add more returns if you want more mixing options. You can also add multiple stems for different songs, and use this template for a live dub mixing set. Happy mixing.

    Can anyone tell me how to reset the memory on a live mix to start over fresh on same track? If I mess up and start over it keeps doing the same thing (mix) over and I have tried everything... Pretty frustrating

    @@jaheyes3188 Check your WARP settings for long files in preferences . I have mine off and change them manually if needed otherwise Ableton will auto warp the tracks to your globel tempo.. that might be the problem :)
