Dub Mixing Techniques (Scientist, Prince Fatty) | You Suck at Mixing #10

Hi, I'm Underbelly, and You Suck at Mixing. In today's lesson, we're gonna learn how to use Ableton's Echo effect to create our own Dub mix. This technique was pioneered by Scientist, a Jamaican recording artist and engineer who I saw show off this technique at the Ableton Loop conference last week. Here I demonstrate how to recreate the technique inside of Ableton. Wowzers!

id really love a "you suck at performing" series of videos that goes more into building a cohesive template and performance inside of ableton. it's really hard to find good videos on that sort of thing!

its the year 2022 i have no idea what i am doing but i am having such a marvelous time! my only friend who is suffering atm a dark period because of alcoholism visited me yesterday since a long time. he is very down because of covid atm all therapy institutions are cutting short. i showed him the set i copied from your stuff - and we jammed together. i was using sometimes a little turntable (my scratching is just ass but i dont care) he was trying to control all the faders, hahaha, we laughed so hard, it was so much fun, used a lot of strange vocal samples i found over the years. it was the best evening since a long, long time...

Trying to emulate your delay feedback distortion loop from the intro. A great effect I remember from the main beat to Leftfield's 6-8 War. Getting something close to it with Objec Delay with a very quick delay tap, some saturation and a little upper-mid range eq boost.

Lel. FR u can do that with FL. The Signal of the Echo was sent back through the echo itself so you got a loop there that's going on like forever this is the feedback. And a Return track is just a regular Aux Channel, i.e. the Echo Plugin is on that Return channel and you can send the other channels through it. I'm pretty sure that u can do that in FL studio too

You can, but I just downloaded dubs off of KZread(search for Scientist dubs), save them in a folder on your computer/laptop. Open Ableton and locate "places"(it should be on the left side under "categories". Click on "add folder" and locate the folder that you saved the scientist dubs in. Select it and now you should have a copy of your dubs folder in Ableton. Then drag and drop them into the clip slots.
