Hey folks, lots of talk on my use of the word "limited". It's ruffled a few feathers it would seem. This is my palette stripped down to what I feel is essential for my process as it stands today, based on the tests I've been running in the studio. Could it be limited further? Yes, I'm sure so. But, as this is not the usual range of 15 or so colours I usually play with, I call it limited. I may make a video again in the future where I push this even further. The comments have inspired me to make more content on this subject. I hope you found something in this video entertaining and useful nonetheless. Thanks so much for all of the comments. I really appreciate you taking the time and watching the videos. Andrew

I think its because at least here in the states people are use to most of the people teaching landscape in oil recommending the classic 3 color plus white palette. So a lot of painters are being taught, for better or worse, to use cad yellow light, cad red and ultramarine. I remember the first 3 workshops I took were all painters recommending that same limited palette. I have a hell of a time trying to explain to people trained this way that just because you use 3 colors doesnt mean you have more harmony in your painting. You can use 500 colors and create a far more harmonious painting than someone else using 3, it has absolutely nothing to do with your palette and more to do with the end result of your mixing, and lastly you can reach the same mixture using an almost infinite number of combinations of different palettes. Keep it up man, enjoy your videos!

This video was phenomenal and thank you so much for sharing your vision about color mixing with us and how limited pallet can actually get you a lot of tonal range like you demonstrated in this video.I didn't know about so much that you talked about here and it was very informational and enjoying to listen and watch. Again thank you so much for everything that you do you are phenomenal artist and human being God bless you.

At the moment im challenging myself with a Royal Poinciana. Any tips? In not going for an extreme realistic feal. The tree im after is in hyper full bloom. I have started an under painting. Im already over thinking that.Just as a study. I havnt painted with oils for a while. I know i can do this. Im intimidating by color.

This was fun to watch, thanks for sharing it. My daughters loved it too, abs are demanding that we take them to the hardware store tomorrow so they can grab a bunch of paint cards so they can challenge mom 😂This brings up a question I’ve been struggling with a bit as I learn to mix color with opaque paints after years of focusing on watercolor work. Despite a really solid comfort level with color theory, I find I’m having so much trouble conceptually when I’m painting with oils- it feels so different from mixing watercolor. There is the fact that I’m adjusting tone by adding white instead of diluting with water, but really I think that I’m struggling to adjust hue, because with watercolor I generally never mix more than three pigments (in order to protect translucency and vibrancy), but with oils it feels as though I need to mix more different pigments in order to create certain hues- I watch artists mix pigments that would create an absolute disaster in watercolor and it looks vibrant and beautiful, so I can see I’ve got a bit more flexibility. But I can’t seem to get my brain to make the switch that will allow me to tackle certain tones and hues the way I need to in this medium. I’ve been looking for resources that tackle these differences between the two mediums but haven’t found anything helpful. Do you have any resources you could point me to about this aspect of color mixing in particular?

Hi, I am the most famous painter in my room. When I hanged my first artwork on the wall, all cockroaches disappeared. I don't think anybody can brag about it like me. But seriously, your color mixing Solutions game, I repeat every two or three paintings. Then I know that whenever I paint, I know without thinking how to produce a color that will go on the canvas! Thanks, Andrew!

Hey Andrew, so glad I caught this video today. Working on a painting with some tricky colors coming up. It gave me the idea to pick up some of those paint color swatches and try this for myself. I am sure it will take me a lot longer to find the right color, so I'm going to pick up ten swatches of each color, and I'm going to mail them all to you when I'm done.....only kidding of course. By the way, I just learned something new about you watching this video; you are a total art nerd!!! Love it, you are amazing. I also am taking advantage of two free months of skillshare. Thank you so much for that! There are so many things I am interested in but don't have the funds to take all the courses. - plus right now with covid i wouldn't. So thank you for helping me expand beyond the art realm into more areas of interest! Keep well; i look forward to -- well, whatever comes next!

Sweet! I'd have used the cadmium yellow as the warmth in the coffee time, though it may be as I haven't calibrated my display - so what I'm seeing perhaps isn't the same as you are in-person. FYI, been a housepainter since 1980 and earth tones, as far as housepaint go - (all makes) are generally mixed with burnt umber and light, medium or dark yellow ochres (they all seem to use those tints, perhaps it's as they are cheapest for large volume, industrial applications) My biggest lament is the chroma value of housepaint - even the C2 - isn't even close to artists colors. This is an awesome challenge and it's made me really want to dig out my own paints and faff around with my own personal palette. So wonderful! Thanks. :)

I trained myself to mix the colors I want using a true red, ultramarine, cad yellow, burnt umber and titanium white. I learned a lot about mixing and found I did need a turquoise to do marine paintings. I like your pallet best. I found over the years I was confusing myself by using too many colors. I think that mainly came about by having used pastel pencils and several hardnesses of soft pastel for many years. I could have used your videos about 25 yr ago. 😂
