Hey folks, lots of talk on my use of the word "limited". It's ruffled a few feathers it would seem. This is my palette stripped down to what I feel is essential for my process as it stands today, based on the tests I've been running in the studio. Could it be limited further? Yes, I'm sure so. But, as this is not the usual range of 15 or so colours I usually play with, I call it limited. I may make a video again in the future where I push this even further. The comments have inspired me to make more content on this subject. I hope you found something in this video entertaining and useful nonetheless. Thanks so much for all of the comments. I really appreciate you taking the time and watching the videos. Andrew

I think its because at least here in the states people are use to most of the people teaching landscape in oil recommending the classic 3 color plus white palette. So a lot of painters are being taught, for better or worse, to use cad yellow light, cad red and ultramarine. I remember the first 3 workshops I took were all painters recommending that same limited palette. I have a hell of a time trying to explain to people trained this way that just because you use 3 colors doesnt mean you have more harmony in your painting. You can use 500 colors and create a far more harmonious painting than someone else using 3, it has absolutely nothing to do with your palette and more to do with the end result of your mixing, and lastly you can reach the same mixture using an almost infinite number of combinations of different palettes. Keep it up man, enjoy your videos!

Andrew thank you so much for sharing your passion, talent and your art with us you are such an amazing inspiration to me and to so many people around the world... This video was phenomenal and thank you so much for sharing your vision about color mixing with us and how limited pallet can actually get you a lot of tonal range like you demonstrated in this video.I didn't know about so much that you talked about here and it was very informational and enjoying to listen and watch. Again thank you so much for everything that you do you are phenomenal artist and human being God bless you.

Andrew, don't you mind those troles and those who insist on bringing negativity to everyone around them. I'm here because your art speaks for itself and because your helping me learn the world of painting... and thanks to your sketchendeavour hash tag, joined a community of artist. I appreciate you.

At the moment im challenging myself with a Royal Poinciana. Any tips? In not going for an extreme realistic feal. The tree im after is in hyper full bloom. I have started an under painting. Im already over thinking that.Just as a study. I havnt painted with oils for a while. I know i can do this. Im intimidating by color.

This was fun to watch, thanks for sharing it. My daughters loved it too, abs are demanding that we take them to the hardware store tomorrow so they can grab a bunch of paint cards so they can challenge mom 😂This brings up a question I’ve been struggling with a bit as I learn to mix color with opaque paints after years of focusing on watercolor work. Despite a really solid comfort level with color theory, I find I’m having so much trouble conceptually when I’m painting with oils- it feels so different from mixing watercolor. There is the fact that I’m adjusting tone by adding white instead of diluting with water, but really I think that I’m struggling to adjust hue, because with watercolor I generally never mix more than three pigments (in order to protect translucency and vibrancy), but with oils it feels as though I need to mix more different pigments in order to create certain hues- I watch artists mix pigments that would create an absolute disaster in watercolor and it looks vibrant and beautiful, so I can see I’ve got a bit more flexibility. But I can’t seem to get my brain to make the switch that will allow me to tackle certain tones and hues the way I need to in this medium. I’ve been looking for resources that tackle these differences between the two mediums but haven’t found anything helpful. Do you have any resources you could point me to about this aspect of color mixing in particular?
That cobalt teal is a beautiful colour, I want to eat it.

Hi, I am the most famous painter in my room. When I hanged my first artwork on the wall, all cockroaches disappeared. I don't think anybody can brag about it like me. But seriously, your color mixing Solutions game, I repeat every two or three paintings. Then I know that whenever I paint, I know without thinking how to produce a color that will go on the canvas! Thanks, Andrew!
Andrew you are so underrated everyone let's try to get him to 500k

"Quinacri-don't" 😭😭😂 I see what you did there! loved the humor here.
Andrew mixing of colors in so important in oil painting. Your video of working with a limited palette was very informative.
This was a huge help. It’s something, as a self taught artist, that I’m not really schooled in. Thank you for showing us in such a clear, kind and humorous way👍🏻👍🏻💖🤗
Andrew, Thank you for this lesson. You have no idea how much your teaching helps wanna-B artists like myself. I watched this and a light bulb went off.
This is one of my favorite videos. I have struggled, many times, attempting to create certain colors and ended up with a huge pile of muddy wasted paint. What a great idea using the paint samples from the hardware store! Now, that in my state we are 25% open, I am going to Home Depot to get my bunch of samples.
I LOVE spending time watching the Mad Scien-tisch at work!!!! You are amazing, I'm excited to try this with your palette. Thank you for the fun and learning. You are my favorite!!!!!
OK, OK ... so you're a clever man. I mixed just one of those colours ... in an hour! Alright ... two hours. Swearing helps. A superb clip, Andrew, and one that I'll make good use of. Many thanks.
This looks like a fun challenge Andrew, it’s amazing how many colours can be made with that palette. I was concerned with that red but you got that easy.👍
Great exercise, love your enthusiasm as well, I'm excited about matching a few paint chips too now.
This is such a satisfying video to watch! Mixing the colours has always been my favourite part of painting. I find it extremely relaxing to the point that when I was younger it would actually begin to dry while I was still playing around with it. Hence my switching to watercolour later in my practice 🤣
Good one. Wish I'd started this exercise over a month ago before I started my current painting which has loads of subtle colors & changes. You are a great teacher.
Hey Andrew, so glad I caught this video today. Working on a painting with some tricky colors coming up. It gave me the idea to pick up some of those paint color swatches and try this for myself. I am sure it will take me a lot longer to find the right color, so I'm going to pick up ten swatches of each color, and I'm going to mail them all to you when I'm done.....only kidding of course. By the way, I just learned something new about you watching this video; you are a total art nerd!!! Love it, you are amazing. I also am taking advantage of two free months of skillshare. Thank you so much for that! There are so many things I am interested in but don't have the funds to take all the courses. - plus right now with covid i wouldn't. So thank you for helping me expand beyond the art realm into more areas of interest! Keep well; i look forward to -- well, whatever comes next!
Thank you Andrew, what a great idea! Matching color swatches is challenging but a great tool to improve your painting skills. I will be heading to the hardware store soon to try this exercise myself!
Hey Anderw, Really enjoyed watching this video and I’m certainly glad I got to catch this video before it goes public. You channel is one of the best sources on oil paintings and lessons, I was wondering if is an video on your channel about warm and cool colors , and if not are we to expect a lesson on this matter hopefully? Thanks, regards.
Totally loved this video, made me feel better at how long it takes me to match color @ times. Thanks so much Andrew, REALLY appreciate you!
Such a great video. You're one of the best on here, for sure. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
This was great fun to watch, I may give it a try. I think using a limited palette makes me more accurate about the colours I use. When using a big palette it's a lot more tempting to use the colours as they come without really thinking about it.
i love this guy, i feel like this passionate when mixing color and experimenting too. you got a friend in my brother.
Thank you, Andrew! Always enjoy everything you teach! Appreciate you!
I get so pumped when that sweet music fades in and that intro rolls, I love it!
Hi Andrew . You paint wonderful still lifes. You easily mix light and dark colors and worm and cool.Thank you for the tutorial on mixing colors.
That was so much fun to watch . Your excitement when you matched the colours, and that “BAM” . I will need to watch it more than once because the focus on your face is so funny. Say thanks to Zoe for trying to catch you out, better luck next time 🤪❤️
Thank you Andrew, I've been using your palette in oils for some time and I'm going to pick me up a couple dozen color cards this weekend. Awesome lesson.
Love your enthusiasm and great idea for learning how to mix colours.
Andrew, I learned more in that little exercise than probably any other instruction I've had. I'm going to try this myself. Thank you! This is confidence building!
Part of my living comes from woodworking, and on repairs I have to mix colors. This helps. I have also watched ...draw mix paint. He has an excellent video on color matching. Thanks again for sharing and teaching!
Thank you for posting wonderful content. I love absorbing all the info. It really is helping me grow as an artist.
Andrew, this was a blast. All of your color mixing videos have inspired me in so many ways. Thank you for your generosity and time. I loved your insights on working with a CMYK palette a while ago too. Made perfect sense. This challenge was so much fun! BAM! I’m gonna try this ;)
Enjoyed the color mixing. Thanks!
Very fun and great to see how you get to each color. Great video editing also!
sooooo much knowledge here. I'm so glad I found your channel in past. Thanks for your content Andrew ! You're awesome !
This is such a fun exercise. I teach a mini workshop doing this same thing in watercolors using only Perm Yellow Light, Magenta, Pthalo Blue, and Neutral Tint. Highly recommended exercise for all painters regardless of medium!
Absolute treat to watch your videos. Thank you for sharing your skills and your soul
Bam! You nailed these colors beautifully, but I was never able to see you mixing the mauvish one . . . Thanks forall your wonderful videos!
What a great challenge and way to keep your color eye sharp when looking at photos and nature...GREAT video. Thanks for sharing LOVED IT!!!
A brilliant way to help with mixing, I will get some paint samples and give it a go, thanks for your time👏👏
Loved every colourful moment of it
Loved it..had so much fun watching it
Awesome video. This is an exercise every artist should try. Please do more of these videos!
great to see you upload more Andrew!
As always, a great video. I can always look to your videos for inspiration and I've learned so much to develop my own skills. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. As a complete beginner this looks like a great way to learn to mix colours. I am going to try this for sure. And by the way you did make me chuckle...x
That certainly looks like a fun exercise. Going to try. Thank you.
This video made my day, such fun looking at you getting the right colour and tone. 😊
Merry merry Christmas Andrew.. you bring a lot of joy with your super duper videos
Excellent camera footage and instructions and tips etc so clear and easy to understand. Thanks for sharing your skills!
Love your talent and enthusiasm. Contagious!
Thanks Andrew! Much appreciated!
Thanks Andrew, very helpful & fun way to learn about colours!!
Great video Andrew! I remember doing this in my color theory class with Gouache.
He makes it fun and interesting to paint. My favorite artist for his character and art hands down.
Great video, Andrew!! Color mixing is always a challenge, there's always something new to learn. Thanks!
LOVE IT❣️ Thank you for the Challenge. Will give it a try.
Sweet! I'd have used the cadmium yellow as the warmth in the coffee time, though it may be as I haven't calibrated my display - so what I'm seeing perhaps isn't the same as you are in-person. FYI, been a housepainter since 1980 and earth tones, as far as housepaint go - (all makes) are generally mixed with burnt umber and light, medium or dark yellow ochres (they all seem to use those tints, perhaps it's as they are cheapest for large volume, industrial applications) My biggest lament is the chroma value of housepaint - even the C2 - isn't even close to artists colors. This is an awesome challenge and it's made me really want to dig out my own paints and faff around with my own personal palette. So wonderful! Thanks. :)
Coffee time looks more like Latte time. Paddle down those river rapids in the kayak that is your palette. Cool, informative and very encouraging video. Thank you sir.
Didn't think I would enjoy a color matching video so much. Andrew, you are more relaxed than usual with this one and it was purely enjoyment - also, I think some of this information sunk into my thick skull.
It's always fun to learn with you....Amazing colours..just loved it
Needed this today. Thanks
How fun! Great idea to help learn mixing.
Hi Andrew, it's a great video, I really really enjoyed it. It seems so easy for you and yet, it is very difficult. It took me for ever to match only 3 colors. Very good practice. Always enjoy your video !!! Thank you so much. Note: Your prints are beautiful and I wish I could buy one since I saw the videos in the making and the print would have this great feeling ''oh yes I remember how he took the picture, adjusted thing, and went along for the steps in the painting process'' Your are such a great talented painter, wow !!! Thanks again. PS. - suggestion: I would really like to see a video of a painting in the making showing more on this ''palette'' technique. Thank you so much for the inspiration!!!
Hi ''Flicka K'' , I also enjoy portrait painting and several months ago, I bough Andrew's video Portrait painting, long version. It's excellent, it has a lot of details and explanations. One part also show you how to correct some features. When painting, I go back to it regularly, really glad I bought it. What I also like about it is the realism. Of course, the short version is available on his youtude chanel but, the long version gives you a LOT more and it's great!!
Hi Andrew, loved to this colour challenge video and learned a lot. You are amazing as usual and thanks a lot for the tutorial and inspiration. Loved that excitement and happiness on matching the coffee tone and u saying it’s “coffee time” ❤️😊
Excellent video!!!! Great idea to mix to paint samples. As always, your so personable and I enjoy all your videos and of course, your paintings super amazing. Thanks
i don't work in oils, digitally mostly but i love watching ur videos. u explain everything so amazingly i've learned a lot of things from u 😁❤
Very helpful! Thank you so much! I enjoy your videos and always learn something new!
This video was fantastic! Please, please do more color mixing matching swatches! So helpful when it comes to mixing oils. Thank you!!
Awesome work ! I will try this
LOVED THIS! Please do a part 2 !!!! You’re incredible!!!!!!!!
Another fun and informative video Andrew!
Learned so many things from you.... Stay blessed
Great information and as always you make painting fun and exciting. Really enjoyed watching this segment.
Loved watching this! What a great idea for a video 👨🏻🎨
This is another amazing video, thank you Andrew ! I am learning so much !
Great challenge but one thing which must have made this even harder is painting onto a semi sheen surface with wet, therefore high gloss colour, refracting the light and giving you different values of refraction?...a well demonstrated exercise!
This was fun and very instructive. I was guessing what your brush would be reaching for before you did. Half the time I was right, but half the time I was wrong. Great way to practice color mixing. thank you!
Great Exercise, Thanks!
I trained myself to mix the colors I want using a true red, ultramarine, cad yellow, burnt umber and titanium white. I learned a lot about mixing and found I did need a turquoise to do marine paintings. I like your pallet best. I found over the years I was confusing myself by using too many colors. I think that mainly came about by having used pastel pencils and several hardnesses of soft pastel for many years. I could have used your videos about 25 yr ago. 😂
Brilliant Andrew! You're the master of mixing those colours dude!
Awesome challenge, thank you!
Amazing , I will try this
I'm only 6 minutes in so far and I'm cracking up at how pleased you are with yourself at matching the colors...LOL! You are too funny! 🤣
Thanks Andrew for showing how to mix colors is interesting.
Brilliant tutorial Thanks
Thank you andrew
This is awesome very helpful! Thanks for the lessons!
will definitely try this palette
BAM! Great video Andrew! Thank you.
I love how much fun you had appeared to have had with this!
Very cool video Andrew, I still struggle trying to mach a color just looking at the tablet screen. Whenever I can I get the reference photos printed and paint the mixes right over just like you did. Thanks a lot and by the way, nice shirt mate!
Great video! Very informative and challenging! Plan on using this to sharpen my skills!
What a fun video! Thank you!
Interesting video!! Great challenge to find exactly colors!!
Really interesting and a fun thing to try.
It was fun to watch, thank you Andrew!
Totally awesome Andrew!! 😃 that was such good fun to watch. I found myself guessing what you were going to use..... off to get some colour cards 😃
Great idea to better color mixing. thanks. I am looking forward to receiving a DVD from you on Winter Landscape.
