How to minimize LED screen artefacts during shooting

Фильм және анимация

This video covers:
- a bit about LED screens - what they are, how the image is formed, the most important parameters you need to look up if you want to rent some for your shoot (such as pixel pitch, optimal viewing distance,PWM, refresh rate),
- the 2 artefacts that can appear on camera (flicker and moire),
how to avoid getting flicker (or fix it if you do), and
- a big chunck is dedicated to how to prevent or minimize moire during shooting

you're very welcome, I'm really glad this is actually helpful! If I get the opportunity to get some led wall time in the future, I'd love to get some actual test footage with all of those things I exemplified :). Good luck!!

foarte bune informatiile, multumim evita o a doua sursa de sunet, foloseste doar mic lav, intrucat a doua sursa de sunet parca dedubleaza vocea.. Succes pe mai departe :)

if i understand correctly: flicker depends pretty much on the quality of the led screen and moire mainly on the quality of the camera (if it has an OLPF)

Hi, you're right about the flicker. I'm not 100% sure about moire though because I didn't get to test it extensively. In order to be sure what the main cause of moire is, i would have had to test at least 2 -3 screens with 2-3 cameras. You might be right, but I'm not sure

Thanks for the detailed information. I'm a stills photographer shooting dance shows against an LED screen. To capture dance action I need to shoot at 1/400 to 1/650 s. Unfortunately I get a lot of artefacts from the LED screen both flicker, moire and weird colour solarisation. I would be grateful for any advice.

Hi, other than using an external filter on your lens, I can't think of anything. You can give this a read, might help philipbloom.net/blog/an-interesting-solution-to-eliminating-moire-and-aliasing-from-your-dslr/

Thanks for the video. I like your videos for their serious and credible information. Maybe you should have a few more examples of what the good host says, e.g. the example where you show how different focus settings etc. can help on moiré is fine, (but it should have been shot on a tripod). be a little more self-critical with the execution of the clips you shows, the content is really good so it is only the smaller details that may need a little polish. You should consider presenting yourself with a name, I know Ion is a male name so it can not be you. By personalizing your channel a little more, you can make people feel a sense of belonging to the channel and perhaps return more often. I like your channel and you must of course stick to your personal and serious style. My comments are meant as inspiration. Looking forward to seeing more from you. 😀 Mikkel

thanks for the input! I’ll take everything into consideration :). Unfortunately in this case of the LED wall tests, we were crew for the shooting of a commercial and managed to play around a few minutes while the screens were being set up. Noted though, we try to run the tests done in our studio with better protocols. About the name, the channel started with Ion (my husband) doing tech reviews, I started doing the more indepth stuff later on. but you do make a fair point, perhaps it’s worth doing a presentation video with the both of us- My name is Cosmina :))
