I love to research old maps. Its amazing how many areas which were once farms, roads, buildings, etc. are now just forrests only 50-100yrs later. Small villages, towns, and industrial areas have come and gone for ages. In America we don't have the benefit of thousands of years of civilization, but we do generally have very good land use records available and a wealth of that is on-line, free to look up. I also try to correlate old maps with current Google Earth images.

That's great that you got the permission to detect the park. Great tips about the evergreens leaving less leaf-litter, and not leaving any damage behind - especially in a park where more people would walk through at night or in fog.

Another great video. I live in the Forest of Dean, (literally in the forest!) so this is great advice. Thankfully some of the woods around me is privately owned so hopefully I can get permission. Lots of mining going back hundreds of years so lots of iron and junk, but also hopefully a few decent things to be found. If not, then I’ve had a nice few hours in the woods with nature.

I miss the old metal detecting activities you did in Germany, I really enjoyed watching those. Just watching you during this video, it is obvious that your passion for detecting is alive and well, in fact, you seem to be in your element more than when doing the travel videos. I do enjoy the travel, and I hope you continue to do both. I watched the video you and Mazzi shot where you were requesting ideas to fund the project and I am trying to think of ideas to help.

Plus... remember, once you walk 5 miles into the woods, to bury your beer cans nice and deep, for detectorists who may come after you. Even better, bury the foil that you wrapped your sandwiches in. Dan especially loved to find foil under the ground, while deep in the forest. It adds to the excitement and adventure!

Aloha Dan & Maizie! Very informative video! The part about headphones and wildlife made me remember a story I heard about couple, they were metal-detecting here in America. They just kind of wandered away from each other without noticing, and the lady is looking down and sees a pair of "hairy feet," she looks up and theres a "Bigfoot" standing a couple feet from her with a big SMILE on its face!!Lol! Needless to say, she dipped out of there, and wished she had been listening AND paying attention!!
