How to Measure For and Choose the Right Size Window Blinds

In this video, we're talking about stock sizes of Window Blinds, not custom sizes. Stock sizes come in various widths: As narrow as 10" and as wide as 107".
All stock sizes measure 1/2 inch less than their stated size. For example, the headrail and slats of a 36"x72" mini blind measure 35-1/2". Therefore, if your window opening is 36" wide, a 36" wide blind will be a great fit. It will leave only 1/4 of an inch of space on each side.
If your window opening is 35-1/2", you should choose a 35" size blind. It will measure 34-1/2" wide and you will have 1/2" space on each side. This is still quite normal.
We do sell some sizes which are "half" sizes such as 28.5x72. The headrail and slats of that size will measure 28 inches.
When mounting your blinds outside of the window box, as shown in this video, the sizing is much more flexible. You can buy your blinds an inch or more to cover the whole window. We call this "outside" mounting.
In this video, we also talk about the brackets. The bracket styles have changed to accommodate the new cordless style blinds. Therefore, if you are going to replace existing blinds from your windows, you will probably need to uninstall your old brackets and replace them with the new brackets which come with your new blinds.

The only person who tells you what you need to know. I was going to buy a smaller size to make sure the shades would fit but now I'm going to buy the size of the window.

What a lifesaver. I have been searching for blinds for weeks trying to get what I thought was the correct size. All along i just needed my window size.

Thanks for the simplicity of your video. All I needed to know from the store assistant at Lowe's was if blinds come in standard sizes or not. They couldn't really answer the question. My window is 35 length and 46 width, the only blinds I can find with that width are 64 inch long, would that be fine? Or do I need to find shorter blinds.
I wanted to do inside mount but all my windows I found out by measuring are different sizes one window is 2 inches wider another is a inch shorter but they are all the same height I rent so when this apartment was remodeled I think they used windows from a low quality manufacturer that didn’t use precise measurements because custom windows would all be exactly the same width height and depth so I think I should go with outside mount at least that way I can get them all the same dimensions and look more uniform in appearance cause you’ll always have that one guest that will notice one window looks slightly narrower than the other if I use inside mount in my opinion
