How To Measure & Calibrate A Dolby Atmos Mixing Setup (inc Sonarworks Immersive)
My name is Paul Third and I am a Scottish youtuber / audio engineer / mixing engineer / audio geek. I mostly cover audio engineering related content ranging from audio plugin shootouts / plugin comparisons (acustica audio plugins, universal audio etc etc) to actual analog vs digital / gear vs plugins plugin tests via access analog and mix analog. I even include ddmf plugindoctor tutorials in my plugin reviews so you can be your very own plugin tester and experiment and understand whats actually going on under the hood.
All of my content is produced in Presonus studio one 6 which is my main daw and in terms of my audio interface I record and monitor through a universal audio apollo x6 through topping dx7 pro+ dac/amp and use a JZ V12 for all of my voice overs.

Good video paul very interesting how you went about setting up your room :) Everyone that has been in my Atmos room has been blown away by Atmos and can't believe how much better it is over stereo :) Enjoy

@@PaulThird If you ever need someone to listen to your ADM files:) happy to do so... I do this a lot with my friends in USA who are atmos equipped :) Always good to know someone is hearing what you are hearing :)

REW is a more manual but more effective way of room correction. Especially when combined with MINI dsp boxes that allow you to correct frequency response and add delays into the system which will fix the phase and frequency response issues. I’d recommend getting into REW. Also the level calibration thing you mentioned isn’t just “a thing some people do” it is the way that most serious acousticians do it since that’s the standards. The thing about subs can be compensated by the use of delays which would phase align them and remove the notch/ dip you were seeing. Calibrating a Dolby atmos setup is pretty difficult and I think you’ve done a great job but I’d highly, highly recommend that you get into the nitty gritty of calibration and dsp correction. Even just for stereo systems. I think if you’re wanting the most perfect setup the answer is manual dsp correction which will realistically only take you about a week to get to grips with and some extra trial and error when you physically do it but it’s not that hard honestly.

Tbh im really happy with the end result I've got with sonarworks as I put in a lot of time to get the room right prior to calibration. I wouldn't want to dive any further with that room as id only be trying to recreate what I've already got with sonarworks. Id just get the same results, but I'd have to manually eq each speaker which I tried and didn't like. It just wasn't right in my setup. Sonarworks and oria just make a lot of sense to me as they are now fixed to work together. You select oria as the interface in soundid and all the calculations are adapted to specifically work with oria's own parameters. I just walk in, switch everything on and it's good to go. Everything calibrated on the unit

@@PaulThird With Oria it makes sense but the issue with sonarworks is that it's fairly inconsistent with measurements whereas room eq wizard is extremely consistent when you know what your doing. (look up the moving mic measurement technique) I think you've done a great job but the extra element that oria or sonarworks doesn't do is the delay part which can be pretty essential when it comes to phase aligning all those speakers.

@memeswillneverdie what do you mean that it doesn't do the delay part? It uses phase response measurements to get the delay sub millisecond accurate.. Well it states that it gets it sub millisecond accurate anyway and to my ears it sounds pretty bang on. You know straight away when it's not right in atmos

I don't care about Dolby Atmos but still watched the vid and learned something useful. Nice tip with putting sonarworks mic differently to what the manual says - need to try it one day (altough I mix fully without sonarworks now but still have their mic and the license)

Great Paul, congrats with phase one. Nice job with the room response +/- 4dB is really good. Now you can worry how your binaural fold downs translate to different systems, another rabbit hole of which I’m sure you will be able to tackle in time. 🤟🏼

Let's hope I don't need to obsess as much about the fold down as I did the room haha

Testing and calibrating a pile (16 for me) of speakers in any room can drive a guy mad. I'm still learning my room and system. I think there is a fine line between experimentation and true calibration and tuning. Both take a lot of time and can really make you question your own sanity. All via REW for me which alone was a lengthy process to sort out.
