By far the most comprehensive and practical info I found so far - I also use Nuendo and thinking to get a complete kali audio setup as it's not going to break the bank...i might need to watch a few more times and understand the calibration and processor connectivity parts...and yes i wish it was easier :-)

Great Video with short but good explanations about every detail.

This is the very best video on start off building a budget atmos studio. Very good tips to look for and cost effective. Before this the very minimum to start doing atmos mix was $4000 bucks…. 😢

A lot to learn about this nifty feature. I'm going to be proud at mixing and finding the right people for my performance mixes. I used to look at this method as the tweaker speaker quality sound around the room in an average home stereo system. Cars used to after market install these into the inner sides of a vehicle. If I end up having to go this route. I certainly wouldn't mind and I'm sure having a big "tall" room helps the Atmosphere. I'm definitely good for this new technique and I'm already picturing harmonies, stacks, and adlibs being on this new Astral plane level of music sound.

Thanks for doing this, i've been wondering if it's possible to mix Atmos music with consumer grade Home theater gear.

8:12 Emotiva BasX MC1 13.2 is also a good choice it's based on this tonewinner unit but only does 13.2 channels of processing which is fine for a 7.1.4 set up and is only $1,099

I understand that you're looking to propose a budget Atmos. The used market for studio monitors is cheap, you need at a minimum the same speakers for the sides and rears. Then also all the same for height, for the imaging of object-based audio. They don't need to be all Yam 8's but you are not going to get imaging between studio monitors to PA speakers and then to computer speakers. Kali 6' or JBL 5'. I'll definitely agree with the 3 identical across the front just turn it upright like @SilentSynergyMusic said or use Phantom mode.

Thank you! No, I am using only Nuendo. The Windows environment seems limited in the world of professional Atmos music at this time, and I'm not keeping up.

The Fire Tv Stick doesn't work for me. Tried Amazon Music Unlimited but no atmos (even if its supposed to be). Tried Apple Music with Alexa Skill, only stereo. Kind of desperate. Any alternatives?

Great video! what are interfaces for this setup? I have an Apollo Twin X and a ADA8200....do you think that my only option is the Apollo X16? (or change to Focusrite maybe....)

I'm using two pieces that are both obsolete. The main 8x8 USB interface is the Steinberg UR824. The secondary is the DigiMax DP88, which connects do the UR824 via ADAT. If I had to do it again I'd go with Focusrite, both for the main interface and the satellite.

@@balladeerstudio thanks so much for your response and videos; I aiming to stop over-Spending in things that have not proven yet to add much value to my work and / hobbies.... But I´ve been using Atmos in Cubase12 in Binaural mode... and I am all into it, I belive now Atmos it is here to stay. 🤓 Changing Interface from UA to Focusrite, at this point, to me it is almost the same than only getting the Apollo X16, so darN!!! it is not going to be cheap...... (the X16 costs $4000 but I already have the Satelite, the Apollo Twin X ,so that would be my cost. The Focusrite is 1000 for the satelite and about 4,400 for the RedNet Dante.... so that´s 5,400 .... all this plus the D25 conenctors and all the cables... ) ... and then....only then I will see about the rest of the speakers. I already have 2 Footprint 1 which is enough for a stereo system, which will always be my main mixing setup, I have also 2 JBLs MKii 8". Those will be the Main L R and Rear speakers respectively, and for the rest Kali audio 3 way 6" might be the best option, cheap but very good sound and quality. And for the Overheads, I have 4 cheap computer monitors.... I could start with them..... With your experience, how do you see this? do you think there is a less expensive way? 🙃

@@MarcoPolux Since I'm using Cubase's internal Dolby Renderer, I didn't need to buy a Dante system. I did a video on using trusses for four overhead self-powered nearfield monitors.

How do you physically connect your computer that is running Nuendo to your Atmos processor? And what computer are you using? You didn’t explain it in your previous videos neither. (We have a MacBook Pro running Nuendo)

The 12 analog outputs from the Atmos processor are connected to 12 line-level inputs on my audio interface. It's an analogue, not digital, connection.

@@hireality Exactly. The computer -> audio interface could be USB, Thunderbolt or anything else. The actual interface is 8x8 but with optical cables and another 8x8 preamp unit, it acts like 16x16.

I've got a request. How to master Dolby atmos within cubase or nuendo. What channel do we place our mastering plugins on during an Atmos mix? Can you cover this?

I haven't "mastered" any tracks at this point. I do know that it doesn't work in the traditional way. You can't apply plugins to an Atmos mix without mixing in the usual way (with the Renderer). It's a great topic.

You misunderstood. I have an 8-channel interface (not a card) with another 8 channels connected by optical cable. Total 16 inputs and 16 outputs.

@@balladeerstudio Ok I think I understand, in fact I did a lot of research on focusrite 18i20 but I saw that I was missing 2 more outputs and you are telling me that the Focusrite OctoPre would be an amplifier for more channels isn't it? the connectivity between them how would it be done, sorry for the ignorance... I'm very lost of how to get this system for a low cost but functional. Right now I'm only working on binaural but when I go to an Atmos mixing room all my sound is not good, I've really realized that I need a 7.1.4 system. Couldn't the spdif output lines of the focusrite 18i20 be used with an AD/DA converter and thus be 2 more outputs?

A lot of bad info in the video. The yamahas HS8 HS7 and HS5 are not constructed to be used layed on their side because of comb-filtering effect(the highs and lows speaker are in the center of the body not like NS10 which have the highs speaker at an offset), it is even explicitly written in manual to use it in upright position. Also never use white noise to calibrate speakers because it is impossible to set the low end at correct volume, use pink noise instead which is compensated for the inequalities of the white noise. For a room of a medium size the yamahas HS7 with a HS8s is more than enough you don't need the HS8 which according to my experience are overpowered for 99% users and not so precise in the mid range. Mine surround system is calibrated on cinema standard 85dbs and the HS7 are not even at 1/4 of their volume. For the sides I use HS5, they have lower power and still I have them at 1/3 of max volume adn they mix very well with the HS7s and the sub. I also use phantom center channel(sending center channel to both left and right speaker), it is an ideal solution if you always sit at the listening position and dont have space for center speaker. Remember the center channel was designed mostly for dialogs in large theaters where phantom center is impossible to achieve because you always sit too left or too right. I dont feel there is much difference in clarity compared to having a true center channel.

No a la muy posible posibilidad de que la configuración técnica o la configuración decidida (como todo) por algún usuario sea perseguida a través de Internet y luego transmitida vía "party bridge" a otros interesados... ¿cuáles o quiénes? ¿Dónde están los técnicos e ingenieros de "SONOS"? Internet es una buena herramienta, pero también una trampa, !!Acabarás en Honolulu!! O en Pá ná má!!

If you can't afford a decent Atmos mixing room, just have a professional do it. If you follow this, a large portion of your consumers will hear your mistakes better than you. That's a problem. Especially when you think for even a moment and realize Dolby Atmos systems are big with people who love "hi-fi" audiophile sound who shell out for the same PMC speakers you often see in high end mastering studios. Also beware that Atmos systems in cars is already a thing and will continue to be introduced from the best luxury cars gradually on down, so that's another group of people skipping past your shitty HS8 mixed songs. Having a good set of quality stereo monitors could be an option but it's been my experience that issues that didn't exist in stereo jump out in Atmos. I regularly make nice stereo mixes for clients then when I switch the session over to 7.1.4 on our PMC system, new details tend to pop out that need correction you don't notice them until on a good 7.1.4 system. Remember that there's no additional mastering stage after Atmos so everything you don't catch and fix will be heard by consumers of your mixes.

Thank you. Those are all good points. Especially that the Atmos mix is the "master." I was mainly interested in seeing how it all works, getting my feet wet without spending more money than I would ever hope to make back. I stopped making these videos when it became increasingly obvious that I couldn't keep up. I have an album of my own that I'd still like to release in Atmos.

That said, I really enjoy the sound of my setup even with its limitations. I would never have another opportunity to hear professional Atmos mixes over speakers this way if I hadn't built it myself.
