How to Measure and Size Drawer Fronts & Drawer Boxes

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey friends! After MANY requests to make a video on drawer building, I'm attempting to put together an easy to follow series breaking down the process into four easy to tackle steps:
This first video will discuss how to figure your drawer front and drawer box dimensions.
The second part will discuss how to assemble the drawer box.
The third will explain how to install the drawer slides and the drawer boxes.
And the final part will share some tips on installing the drawer fronts.
I hope you stick around and hit that notification bell so you don't miss when the next parts go live!
This video is a little more "talk to camera" and example based. We won't get into building anything, BUT, getting the measurements is half the work, so it's the foundation for moving into the next steps.
I hope you enjoy it--even if it feels like a math lesson :)

You certainly have a gift for clear communication... whether by voice or by hand gestures! Around here we call it "putting the cookies on the lower shelf." I absolutely love your "deep thoughts on 32nds"... there's an old saying in the biz - " 'Better' is the enemy of 'good enough' "... your philosophy on chasing 32nds perfectly captures that thought. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

I appreciate that! I always wonder when I explain things if it made sense to other people or if it just made sense to me 🤣 so thank you…this is reassuring haha. When I was in college, my engineering professor would always pick at me for double majoring in math. He said if mathematicians had to approach a wall but they could only move half the distance from where they are to the wall at a time, they’d tell you they’d never get there. But eventually an engineer would say “close enough, we are here.” Haha. I feel like I lean more toward the “close enough” philosophy in most things.

I have watched so many cabinet building videos and what you just did is NEVER included in those videos! While I have built cabinets with drawers, I've always used the fudge factor not really knowing the "rules!" You have finally done it, you have explained "the rules!" I love you for doing that!!! To truly teach people, you need to address the things they don't know and you have done that in this video so we'll! I cannot thank you enough, FINALLY someone explained how to calculate drawer size and drawer front dimensions! 🎉

Great video. Finding the sizes of all of the drawers and stuff like that has always made sense to me. What my brain can never seem to figure out is how to calculate where to mount the drawer slides by just measuring. It always takes me like 30 minutes of standing there and staring at it. I like mounting my hardware before I put it together cause its just easier on the back and knees but not on my brain. Like writers block every time.

First time coming across your channel and I have to say this series feels classroom complete which is a very good thing. A lot of of “build this” (not Brad he’s great) type videos tend to be like the draw bird meme. Step 1, draw outline. Step 2, draw the rest of the effing bird. Your tutorial is so thorough and packed with details I legit had to take notes on a paper and rewatch certain parts more than a few times. I just built my first cabinet for the garage as practice and I’d watched enough videos on how to do so. It came out alright and I will admit I kinda winged it on come parts because I’m a kinesthetic learner. I have to do things to really learn, even if it’s just to learn the mistakes and the reason not to do things. With that under my belt this series provided crystal clear details on everything I need to do next time. It feels like I actually showed up to class instead of reading a classmate’s notes and showing up for the test. Long winded way of saying, amazing work!

Great info Shara. Some people may think this is overwhelming but really the way you explain it makes things capable of understanding. Look forward to your part #2. Steve

Great tutorial Shara! You did an excellent job of covering all the major points for figuring out drawer measurements. I don't think I saw Bubby in this video. Hopefully he is out enjoying the warmer weather you're having now!

Thank you so much! Haha I actually had to edit him out of a few of the other videos on the series. He may make his way into one of them, but he was on his little heat pad in the shop while I was filming this one. It’s turned off chilly again here 😩 Hoping for warm and sunny weather soon! Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful weekend and I really appreciate you watching!

You make it look so easy. LOL Since the majority of my builds use Locking drawer slides: Vadania Heavy Duty Drawer Slide with Lock, because I build cabinets for my camping vehicle, I've struggled a bit but also used your plans for a cabinet or dresser as a starting point and that helped a lot. In the course of building drawers, I also make them various depths, some deep enough for spice jars, others shallow enough for plates, and that has added to the "fun" of making cabinets with drawers. Thanks for starting this series of "How To"s, I'm sure I am going to learn something. Until next time... Saw safe.

It’s easy, I promise!! Haha. Yes, you can definitely take this entire process and build it “backwards” as well by customizing the size of the drawer, then building the cabinet to fit. Making a video like this is always challenging…not because the process is difficult, just because there are a million ways to go about it and there’s not a lot of “right” or “wrong,” but there are a lot of variations project to project. I hope this is a good starting point, but definitely not a rule book haha.

This is so timely & helpful! Your video is perfectly explained and easy to follow. All these other woodworkers on YT peacocking with their free domino machines and 40,000 clamps - it’s very uninspiring. After watching this I feel more confident in the next step of my current project - assembling the drawers & cabinet!
