This is for Barbara E - Sounds like you're on the right track Barbara. You're correct in that the 11 1/4" measurement is a little tight for a 12" rough tank and bowl. The tank cover could possibly hit the wall or not even fit onto the tank properly. With the 10" rough you will have approximately an 1 1/4" gap between the tank and wall.

Hi Bob. If I am replacing an existing toilet with a 14" rough-in, can I install a new toilet which only has a 12" rough-in? I realize this would leave a two inch space between wall and tank. But if I install something like a chair rail behind the tank to fill that gap, thus allowing support for the tank, would that be acceptable? Thanks( also) Bob

Hello Bob, our tile man left us breaking our heads here. We have purchased a 10" rough in toilet which we haven't received yet. Will the toilet fit? are there any alternatives other than knocking down our brand new tile?

  • @BobsPlumbingVideos

9" is not going to work! A 10" rough won't fit and even if you use an offset toilet flange which should bring you forward 2". That will give you 11" . A 12" rough won't fit on an 11" measurement. Depending on the manufacturer of the toilet the most I've cheated is installing a 12" rough toilet on an 11 1/4" measurement. Good Luck!

Unfortunately the distance from the wall to the middle of the drain was 12.75 inches for my basement toilet, and the toilet we bought sits 1 and 1/4 inch from the wall. I am not sure what size of toilet it was. Was in a 10 inch or a 14 inch? The toilet was installed a year ago, and I just thought this was normal being an amateur. Instead of tearing out the toilet which is past warranty, what could I put in between the tank and wall so that it doesnt wiggle an potentially break after time? We do not use the toilet often but for guests its a pain. I put some styrofoam for now but it looks ugly. Any suggestions? Thanks!

You could take a look at these:amzn.to/2OCj8Vc. i've used them myself and they are quick and easy to use. Before I found them I would use a block of wood or packing styrofoam and silicone it to the wall just below the level of the toilet tank so the lid would sit correctly.

I would go to the manufacturers website of the toilet you're interested in, and look at the specification sheet for those dimensions. Some , not all will show the size of the actual opening. If not, call the company tech support for that information.

My measurement from the wall to the center of the toilet bolts is 11 inches. Everywhere I read says my replacement should be a 10 inch rough in....however, the tank is very close to the wall, and the tank lid is snug against it. If this were a true 10 inch rough in toilet, wouldn't it be sitting at least an inch from the wall because of the 11 inch measurement? I don't want the new toilet sitting that far from the wall...should I buy a 12 inch rough in and take my chances? Thanks!

12" will not make it, unless you plan on moving the pipe in the floor? A 10" would be my choice, everything is determined by the distance between the toilet bend and the finished wall. If that measurement falls in between the standard sizes of 10", 12", or 14" then you have to make a judgement call. In my experience you can safely place a 12" (the standard) bowl on a 11 1/2" center to wall reading. Anything beyond 1/2" is not going to work.

I think they may have given you the wrong tank. Back in the day you would purchase a 10", 12" or 14" and the tank and bowl were a MATCHING set. Now a days you get the bowl, and they will give you the corresponding tank for the measurement you give them. The tanks are drilled differently for 10,12 or 14. That's all going to depend on where you but it , the manufacturer etc. Sounds like the gave you a 12" tank?

You say the first toilet measurement is 11 1/2" which in my book would be a 12" rough bowl replacement. I cannot say for sure but they may have installed a 10" rough bowl which explains the gap. On a 13' measurement, I would have to go with a 12" rough which will leave you with a gap, but on existing jobs, you don't have too much of a choice other than to move the pipe. Don't forget measure from the bolts to the finished wall, NOT the base molding (if any). The front to back (depth) measurements will to vary by manufacturer. Some will sit closer, some farther away and don't forget you want to have room for the cover sit properly. The best advice I can give you is to visit the site of the company you're considering and download their specification sheet for the tank and bowl with all the measurements so you can check before you purchase.

I have two 30+ year old toilets I want to replace. One is 12" rough-in and the other is 11 to 11-¼" rough-in. So I was going to buy a standard 12" rough and a 10" rough. The existing 11-¼ rough is a 12" toilet, and it is smack up against the wall which could prevent the tank from being installed properly. Right now I am having problems with that toilet, leaking at the tank/bowl bolts, so I figured it is time to bite the bullet and buy new toilets. I just had both toilets removed to tile the floors and now we keep fiddling around to get them just right. So rather than mess with these old toilets I want to buy a 12" and 10" rough-in toilets. Am I on the right track?
